Title: Spreadsheet for recording miles
Post by: Wowbagger on 31 December, 2012, 11:16:31 pm
Chris S mentioned using a spreadsheet, designed by the Queen of such things, for logging his miles in 2013.

I have set up a spreadsheet which, for me, is quite a good effort, but I'm sure pales into insignificance compared to what a real proper spreadsheet user could do.

Does anyone else use a spreadsheet to log miles?

Mine is for recording kilometres.

It also gives me all sorts of stats-
Targets, weight (loss if there was any), planning, what-if scenarios, will give me month-by-month totals, separates by ride type and by machine.
And is beautiful.

It has grown, somewhat, over the years. I've been doing it since I offset the rent increase of moving to my current abode by riding to work, back in 2008. It doesn't, currently, record speeds, but knowing that Chris likes to know such things, I'll probably add that to his page.

I've been using a simple on for a few years.Fields are date, miles, km, and details. Plus at the top daily average and total distance.

Mine counts miles, trips out and shopping by bike

Mine records the daily miles and ride time and adds them together to show monthly and annual totals for time, miles, ave and max speed. I don't know how to do separate totals by bike ridden short of sett up a different sheet for each bike.

Having missed a few years of recording mileage I went back to doing so for 2012 - with nothing more than a spreadsheet that records :

 Date - Brief description/destination - Bike used (a column for each .. 10!) - distance - Notes - e.g extreme weather or mechanicals

... and then a row of column total.   The header line is locked for the rest of the sheet to scroll on the screen.

That's it - I do a manual sum each month and a running annual total that also averages the miles done on an annual basis, per week. Simple, but it works for me.

As I now have a Garmin Edge gadget I might store a bit more data .. but I'm not really interested in much beyond the distance - the thing the Garmin will be used for is to capture routes/tracks as the club is starting to create a library of rides to help new ride leaders - the library is based on the pubs we use for lunch!

Cost is $15 (£9.60) for this year, and it's pretty good IMO. Been using it for the last four or five years.
Tracks pretty much everything you might want to if you don't have a power meter.

I write a database in Filemaker Pro to do mine. The advantage is that it is flexible, and there is data integrity built in. Spreadsheets can go horribly wrong with an intemperate sort.

If you add a column for bike, you can do either SUMIF or a VLOOKUP or a pivot table. (In excel, but I'm sure there are equivalents in whatever you use if you don't use excel).

I only managed to record mileages consistently once I got a bike computer (Garmin) that uploads the data painlessly without having to remember stuff or type it it manually. I upload it into Ascent (Mac-only: http://www.montebellosoftware.com); I can't really recommend this software since it costs £27 and isn't being actively developed anymore, but it allows all the data fields to be exported in spreadsheet formats for any kind of trend analysis or pretty presentation that it can't do itself.

Or if you're truly sad you can load the spreadsheet data into a graphing program like DataGraph and make elaborate plots like this:

Be careful doing this.

I did it a while back and it highlighted how very little I ride some of my bikes.  My Mountain Bike for example, could be reclassified as a wall hanging.

It could lead to N-1 (which nobody wants)

I really only have 3 active bikes. There is also a Brompton which I tend to ride only in emergencies but which Dez uses. All of my bikes see reasonable use. I suspect that the Mercian, now it is a single speed, will become my main pootling/social ride bike. The Thorn is the shopping/touring/work bike because it carries loads, and the tandem is Mrs. Wow's personal sedan chair.

I enter the following into each of 12 monthly worksheets, with new spreadsheets each year: moving time, distance, altitude gain, bike (one of two), ride type (primarily audax, commute or other), ride (brief description of route).  And one worksheet where I just enter miles by the week.  From all of that I have other spreadsheets which show a variety of useless information such as monthly/weekly/annual stats according to ride type, bike type etc.  So I can see that 2% of rides in 2012 were Audax, but that they accounted for 16% of annual distance and 12% of climbing.  Or I could compare my average speed on the Thorn with that on the Sabbath, over the year, for a given month or ride type. Or which my best week was in terms of distance. Or what my average daily commute distance is by month.  Or my longest ride on a Thursday.  Or current Furlongs per Fortnight. I did flirt with cadence and heart rate for while, but they were a step too far for me. I could show you a variety of graphs as well.

I know I have a problem, but as vices go it’s a harmless one and takes very little time.  What I am particularly inept at is recording useful information such as tyre and other component use.  On the plus side, I’m the go-to guy for Excel queries at work.

When I was at ICE, I started a simple mile logging spreadsheet.  As time went on, I added time, average speed, max speed, door to door time & speed, and a series of columns which logged weather data and if I'd been delayed at the level crossing.  I eventually gave it up after I'd changed jobs and got into Bikejournal.

Mine lives on Dropbox so I can access it everywhere I go.

I think it helps that my employment is rarely full-on time and brain consuming.

Does Dropbox work for Bib-Shorts and socks?  I'm thinking it would be very useful for BCM600 at Kings YHA.

Steve

Looks like ProLog Cycling is now dead - no updates for 2019 on the FB page, the ProLog Cycling website has vanished, and e-mailing info@prologcycling.com just results in an undeliverable message.

Shame really, as I've been using it for several years and it seemed to be the best solution for easily tracking everything for multiple bikes/wheels/components etc.

Anyone know the score?

Looks like I'll need to find an alternative.  Strava may be the obvious choice, but it appears adding bikes/wheels/components complete with existing (pre-Strava) mileage is difficult and first impressions are that Strava is less versatile (or can't even do it?) for switching wheels between bikes etc.
