Any more clues for the singer?

Bela Fleck, Mark Feltham and Rory Gallagher played Amazing Grace together at Montreux but I'm struggling with the singer.  30 hits but only 2 in the top ten....

I just noticed a typo in the question. Its 31 UK top 30 singles and 2 US top 10 singles.

OK a clue. He had been a banjo player and his most famous hit was a cover of a Leadbelly track.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

That's Lonnie Donegan!

Right, what the hell is the connection?

Lonnie did an odd album in the 70s to try to revive his career.  He re-recorded his greatest hits with other, more current, artists.  I know Rory Gallagher was on there, but not sure about the others.

I'm looking at it the wrong way round!  It's Wheels Within Wheels, by Rory Gallagher!  Lonnie was a guest on that, as were (I find) Fleck and Feltham.

Correct Clarion !

And if you didn't get the clues here's how it goes:

Famously when asked what it was like to be the best guitarist in the world Jimi Hendrix said "I don't know ask Rory Gallagher".
Lonnie Donenegan had 31 UK top 30 singles and 2 US top 10 singles.
Not quite a public horse is Government Mule and Bela Fleck played banjo on one of their albums.
A very cold British band is Nine Below Zero and their harmonica player is Mark Feltham

They all guested on Rory's acoustic album "Wheels within wheels".
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

That was very much a team effort, so if any of the others come up with a question before I do, please do post it.

Good Q, by the way - seems impossible, but makes sense when it all comes together.  I had never heard of Bela Fleck before, though ;D

You can thank Audax for my having heard of him - PeterM gave me a CD of "Live At The Quick" as a thank-you for giving him a lift back from an icy mid-Wales after an AUK AGM.  The one when ESL kept smoking my fags :-\

OK, should be an easy one: Why can't you see Ronnie Verrell battle Buddy Rich or Harry Belafonte?

Because Ronnie Verrell was the man behind the Muppet's drummer Animal whereas the other two were guests who had drum battles with Animal.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

And if you didn't get the clues here's how it goes:

Famously when asked what it was like to be the best guitarist in the world Jimi Hendrix said "I don't know ask Rory Gallagher".
That's a bit like when a journalist asked Zinedine Zidane what it was like to be the best midfielder in the world and he said "I don't know, ask Paul Scholes."

It's been a while, so.... here we go again

What piece of weaponry links the only living Spider, a "lost" Genesis track and Paul McCartney's bed?

Submarine?  Surviving Spider Woody Woodmansey was a member of U-Boat while the Beatles famously lived in a yellow one.  Any "lost" Genesus track can stay that way, preferably with Phil Collins sent on a mission to find it.

Spot on - I knew it was too easy.

Macca claims to have written Yellow Submarine in bed and the lost Genesis track, called Submarine, should definitely have stayed that way

Blimey, that was pretty much a guess though I did look up Woody the other week to check whether he was still alive.

How has Iggy gone to bed with the Queen?

reviving this thread, 'cause I just happened to read something that caught my attention:

Brian Jones and Keith Richard(s)
George Harrison and Eric Clapton
John Cale and Kevin Ayers

Connection?

Well, I know Layla was (famously) written about Patti Boyd - isn't Guts about Kevin Ayers sha99ing John Cale's SO?  I'd imagine that any number of the Stones' songs might be inspired by Anita Pallenberg...

I think I have to give it to Legs.  The connection I was looking for was that in each case the latter had discussed Uganda with the former's partner yet both had continued to perform together.  Jones accepted that Pallenberg had moved her affections but, no doubt helped by his prodigious intake of alcohol and drugs and the ready availability of replacements,  carried on playing with the Stones until he was ousted.  When Patti went off with Eric, Harrison brooded for a while but later toured with Clapton as his guitarist - and Clapton, of course, was effectively MC at his 'memorial' concert.

For my mind, Ayers and Cale get the prize.  On June 1 1974 Ayers, having disbanded Soft Machine and disappeared off to France to drink wine, was due to play something of a comeback gig at The Rainbow in north London, with Cale, Brian Eno and Nico as 'warm-up' acts and, it's rumoured, then forming a kind of art school supergroup.

Unfortunately, Mr Cale discovered Mrs Cale in bed with Mr Ayers earlier in the day, resulting in a less than amicable performance at the gig and an interesting interaction between the two in the photo on the cover of the album recorded that night.

Over to you, Legs...
