OK - here's one

The Batt brothers, Steve and David - they changed their surnames and were part of which successful 70s/80s British band?

David Sylvian was a Batt, so I'm guessing Japan, and that Steve was also in the band.  Can't do his name, cause I can't remember the band members.

Japan sounds more likely than what I was going to say - The Wombles. But that was Mike Batt, wasn't it.

OK.  I've got another brothers one, then (no idea how easy/hard it will prove)

Who was replaced by his brother when he walked out of his long-standing role (but not by the one already in the band)?

Martin Kemp wasn't an original member of Spandau Ballet, was he? I think it must be him.

Even if he weren't, was it really a long-standing position, did he replace his brother, and I'm asking for the person replaced anyway ;D

No.  Not Martin Kemp.  And not Spandau Ballet.

UB40? Ali Campbell left, Robin was a member but another brother may have joined and got the lead role?

Not Robin Gibb.  I don't think they've replaced him, and Andy died over ten years ago.

That's it!

Ali left in 2008 (along with Mickey Virtue) after nearly thirty years with the band.  He was replaced by his older brother Duncan Campbell (not the journalist of the same name) who had no previous connection with the band.  Robin Campbell, the middle brother, remains in UB40.

But it was Ali Campbell I was after.

Over to you.

Robin left in the late 60s but came back.

it was Maurice who died in 2003

Robin Gibb wasn't a 'long-standing' member in the 60s, and he replaced himself, in a way, when he came back, like Nigel Tufnel.  Andy Gibb (never, as far as I know, a part of the BeeGees) died in 1988.  I just Gewgled it.
