Cambridge 300 from Hauxton on Sat. 26/4/2014
« on: 10 April, 2014, 04:36:21 pm »
I've entered the Cambridge 300, which is on Saturday 26th April. There's a route from the organiser as a Google map, which I've converted into gpx format and is available for download from bikehike. I've not added controls my gpx, but hopefully it'll still prove useful to people.
What on earth am I doing here on this beautiful day?! This is the only life I've got!!

Looks to be a good route. Tempted.

However it's the same day as the Heart of England.

And it's Mrs W's birthday that day.

So, guess which one wins. :(
You're only as successful as your last 1200...

The Heart of England was my first choice for this particular weekend, but on Sunday the First Great Western train set is actually a bus, meaning I wouldn't be able to get home from Cirencester. Ah well, it gives me an excuse to do the Cambridge 300 and experience a different event.

I have entered. It's my first audax, my first 300 and I'm recovering from being knocked off my bike two weeks ago. On the plus side I finally got my garmin to show me a route to follow today! Could be interesting.

Thanks Adamski. I've pinched it.

I'm in. Did the Hoe last year. Planning on ECEing this one into a 500, weather permitting.

I'm in, staying at the in-laws that weekend in Cambridge so ideal, although you may argue that riding a 300k means I won't spend much time there.

IMPORTANT

The route I original posted is now wrong due to a road closure, so ignore my gpx in the original post in this thread. Instead use the gpx Terry Dickerson (the organiser) emailed out to riders. I've uploaded the modified version from Terry to bikehike too.

Snap. Also knocked off a couple of weeks ago although not my first Audax. But I am hoping this'll be my first Audax for April and probably my 3rd or 4th time on the bike this month as well. Likely to be a very steady ride around for me.

I've been lucky and recovered well, did a few good rides this week, up near 150miles done so feeling back on good form. I'll be riding with a friend, aiming for steady pace too, although i'm not sure how that compares with other peoples idea of steady! I'll be on Van Nic Mistral, Tom on a white spec, feel free to say hi to the two confused newbies!

Any idea if the organiser allows late entry/entry on the line?  I tried to enter yesterday but found 'Entries Closed' on the AUK calendar.

I've mailed Terry and will wait on his reply but need to enter something else if this ride isn't possible.

The last time I looked on the event page on auk website it said there were only one or two spaces left, so it is possible the event is now full.

As well as riding on Saturday, I also happen to be Area Manager with Leicestershire Highways and can confirm that as well as the road closure at East Langton, just north of Harborough and already advised by Terry, there is also a second road closure in place at Somerby, around 28km after Mkt Harborough.  This second closure is passable for cyclists, so no need for any amendments to the routesheet.  However, on Saturday there will be a gang resurfacing part of the carriageway and it may appear very congested at times.  You may need to dismount and use the footway for a short distance.  Just be cautious and follow any advice from the workforce.

I've screwed up my back and won't be able to ride. If anyone wants a room at the Cambridge Fourwentways Travelodge for the Friday night then send me a PM. It's about 5 miles from Hauxton.

This will be my first 300 too. I'll be riding a white Mercian so please say hi (Paul). Passing through my home town (Market Deeping) with 90ishkms still to go will be quite a test I think.

There is a large Co-Op in the town that isn't immediately obvious to passers through. Just go through the archway opposite the Stage hotel in the central square.

Did we meet on the Double Dutch last week? I am from Oundle not that far from you.

No, I didn't ride the Double Dutch (I rode the Old Squit) but I'm regularly in Oundle at Beans. See you Saturday?

Are you planning to do skeggy and back..........I believe I owe you a tow ( only if being hit by a car has slowed you down to my pace )

Not planned for this year, still hopeful for the brevet Cymru. Having said that if I don't think I can manage the hills (because of injury....honest) then I'll definitely give some thought to the somewhat flatter alternative route to the coast, and I do love the Alfreton rides for the chatter.

For those that don't know it,  service at Thurleigh farm centre can be a tad slow. Popular with parents and youngsters. Having said that is also a popular cyclists' haunt. So just a heads up really.
