Havering between my old Lapierre and the new plastic Trek.

Problem is that the Lapierre needs a new saddle, the one that came with the Trek isn't bum-friendly beyond 100k, and breaking a new one in in 46 days will be touch & go.  I have a 2006 Ti-frame Swallow practically unused that I was thinking of selling, but I might give it the deadly water-torture instead and see what happens.

Orange Condor.

Same as last time except the brake levers don't wobble from side to side this time.

A 2002 yellow Roberts Audax compact with 2015 chainrings, wheels, handlebars, cassette, chain, lumicycle lights, and pretty much anything else that isn't frame and rack.  Oh - I got the pannier in 2014.  And the bear dates from 1986.  This is the bike I used for PBP in 2007 and Mille Alba.

I found this vintage frame locally, in SE London - just building it up now, hopefully in time or PBP! Chain just needs a bit of oil... ;D

Correct, it's a TREK Domane 4.3.  Well spotted.

Here it is looking shiny.

PBP will see the introduction of a rather huge Carradice Super-C saddlebag as the entire home-paris-brest-paris-home journey will be 11 days or so..

The picture is from 2011. The Islip wheel did indeed go home, but no need for a new wheel. I replaced the pawl spring (and the pawls, for good measure) in the old wheel and rode it home.

The lovely Bernardette, originally intended as a winter bike to save 'Poppy' the Parkes Lightweight, but a better fit [slightly bigger] lighter, stiffer and more comfortable too.

Genesis 853 Day-One Alfine Di2 frameset, Halo Calibre 38mm rims on Surly hubs, 28mm Conti 4 Seasons, TRP Spyre cable disc brakes with 160mm rotors, Alfine cranks with 47x19 [68"] Velo Solo transmission, Hope BB86 bottom bracket [the Shimano one I had originally creaked], KMC stainless 1/8 chain, fizik Cyrano seatpost, Bontrager 110mm stem, Merida shallow and wide 'bars, with two layers of Cinelli cork tape and strategically placed foam underneath, a well broken-in B17 standard.

Plenty of time yet!  What will it be?

Alex Greenbank picked up his PBP bike from Condor just before the 2011 ride after his bike ?broke/was stolen?

I thought I was risking it with a completely different saddle for PBP.  Rode 200km on it last weekend just fine though.

They are all starting to go that way. Ours has one, but the 2015 version doesn't.

Does look to make water bottles even more of a pain in the arse for tandems!

But, yes, they do look ace without them. And the things tandem looks super ace and Orange as well.

I consider it to be the same setup, but when my new seatpost gets fitted tonight the only things still there from 2011 are the frame, forks, headset and Cateye Omni3  :P

Now where am I going to fit my frame number?  ???

About time I did this:

The bike's a 2012 Ridgeback Platinum frame/forks with Ultegra 6700 shifters and Dura-Ace 7800 crankset/derailleurs. I built it in May for my 400 and 600.

It's on ITM Aero 3.0 wheels with GP4000s II tyres and has an Altura seatpost pack on the Fizik R3 seatpost. I'm bringing an additional Hope 1 light if I can get it working properly.

Hopefully the mudguards can be removed. I'll make that call on the Sunday morning.

Drew is on a bike that was free.

It did probably cost a lot in 193-whatever though.

Mine? Frame/forks were £50 from CycleChat plus other people's cast-offs.

For some PBP folk, their bike is in a different country to them. Several options have been explored but DNSing PBP is not on the cards. Midday tomorrow is decision time.

Cleaned and prepped for the next ride

The Ridgeback Platinum I used performed brilliantly apart from a noisy rear wheel which clicked when it was warm.

Not bad from a bike built from everyone else's cast-offs. In the 80-hour group D starters it looked decidedly low-rent with full mudguards, etc.  ;D

....home (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/vindaloo77/100_1979.JPG), and awaiting further modification, which will largely involve removing all the components and paying a visit to the dump. It was built in haste for the qualifiers, and the trip to France, both of which tasks it has fulfilled, but it has issues and it's time has now come. Back to the drawing board.
To give thanks is well in order.

We were incredibly happy to see her arrive, we were just heading to bed when we heard a diesel engine approaching and a little van appeared full of bike boxes and bags. The driver and passenger were very surprised and happy to see us hanging around the locked entrance to a campsite at midnight. Ultimately, the delay and worry was probably a significant contributor to us not completing in the fast time we were looking for, but at least we had fun, and a tandem to ride.

Having been split in two for a car ride, she's back together and was attracting a lot of attention on our ride from Portsmouth to Southampton yesterday. She still needs cleaning, the chain is filthy cos we didn't get around to cleaning it before we left the US.

Ended up with flats front & rear, discovered on taking it out of camping car.  Front has a cut in the tread that I can see through, rear had an ugly chunk of glass embedded in it.  Reckon I picked them up between the finish and the camp site.  Rear looks OK for future, front I'm not so sure. Maybe with a patch on the inside as a back-up.  Brand new Conti GP4000 sII. :(

In the living room, frame numbers removed and clean (ish - there are a lot of inaccessible places on a tandem which require more attention than we gave it on Sunday). Need to tension the timing chain - 1000 miles on a new chain without adjustment is quite a lot.
Suspect that it will soon be behind the dining table and not in use for a while (FHOOT having declared that we need to not ride very far for the next 2 weeks or so....)

Oh yeah and the chain stayed tight throughout, which has been a problem on my forward facing dropouts and goldtec hubs in the past.

I had to tighten my chain at Villaines la Juhel on the way out and it was then fine for the rest of the ride. Weird.

Back home and back together again , but after two PBPs I am thinking of either (a) upgrading to a new Domane or (b) getting the frame resprayed  cos there are one or two chips in the coating and renewing the drive train. Despite having it checked over by LBS , the front changer was very temeperamental, throwing the chain off the small chainring on too many occasions.

For some, maybe. Mine had the frame plate on the rear mudguard, so out of the way.

I've decided it's staying there.

In good order after a fettle with the gears from a mechanic at about 400k.

BUT will be THROWING 105 triple 5600 series levers as far away from me as possible. So bad, but I never changed gear much on essex rides so never really noticed. Will have to move to double or bar-end levers. Sigh.

Almost fettled enough to ride audax again. I've taken off the deep section wheels and put back on the SON and Miche wheels. Edelux II refitted. Carbon brake pads replaced with Kool Stop salmons. Dossard removed. And the best bit is new aluminium mudguards ordered from Charlie the Bikemonger. They're far easier to fit than SKS and intelligently designed. They look the part too.

All I need do now is refit the bagman II and I'll be good to go.

... is folded up in the kids' games room.  Unfolding ceremony on Saturday for my monthly RRTY ride on Sunday.

I removed the Bagman and saddle bag, and managed to ditch enough other bits'n'bobs to fit everything I need for a fair-weather 200 into the front bag — the bike feels very light now, and the centre of gravity is very low, it's weird to ride!  I'm thinking I have one last audax ride on Kojaks this season before the Marathons go back on for winter.  The front hub — standard-fit Shimano dynamo hub — is a bit slack after PBP and the bearings need cinching up slightly.  The rear-triangle pivot bushes have a small amount of play, inevitably given the amount of abuse I've given them, but I've seen much worse.  And I'll need to rebuild both wheels due to worn rims — something for after winter, probably.

That's one LEL and one PBP on it so far.  I'm thinking of treating myself to a new bike for the next big season ... what I mean is, I'm thinking of how to convince Mrs WB to let me treat myself  ::-)

We still need to remove the rear disk brake and put on a standard rim brake, and make a few more tweaks. It also needs to be taken apart for flying before being rebuilt in Paris.
ooh now.. that I DO like :)
