YACF LEJoG Relay
« on: 12 November, 2010, 12:07:02 pm »
The YACF Baton, since November 2010, is attempting to travel from Lands End to John O Groats.

It started with me (I made the Baton and created the brass plaques) but it now belongs to YACF.

The Baton can only ever TRAVEL BY BIKE unless it needs to cross SEA to a foreign land.  If it needs to cross by sea then it must be carried to the ferry/tunnel/plane by bike and leave the destination port/station/airport by bike.

Land-only car/train/bus journeys are not allowed.

Example:  Cycling to Portsmouth ferry, crossing to Cherbourg, then cycling around France IS allowed.

Example: Transporting the baton to Edinburgh by train is NOT allowed.

Reminds me of the C+ Cakestop jersey's travels.  Perhaps, rather than a baton, the whole thing should be done on Fred, the forum bike, who is feeling sadly unloved in my dining room, waiting for someone else to take him on to new adventures.
Getting there...

Baton? Surely a sweet potato lovingly wrapped in the yellowed thong of ambition?

How do I get home once I've handed over the bike?

Anyway, I'll put my name down for getting the baton across Hampshire.

I could collect it in NE Wiltshire and take it to SW Berkshire.

For example:

Anyone signing up to get it across Wiltshire then to me in Salisbury?

Anyone signing up to take it from me in Hungerford?

And so on ..

(I think it would need to visit London)

I could do Hungerford to...Chalfont St Peter, say...

I'll happily do the leg between my house and Jurek's place, if that helps...

(It is mostly downhill, although the first ten yards or so is slightly uphill)

At the end of my ride doing the jersey handover my bike was wrecked/written off due to a roof-rack bike carrier/low barrier interface :(

You'd get the next person's bling carbon bike to ride home on.
It is simpler than it looks.

That means no one would bring it my way, cause they know I ain't got no carbon bling, 'cept a light bar and a pair of forks. ;D

I think most people would settle for just one frock.

I'd help out with it in and around Manchesterish in any direction, whatever "it" turns out to be.

until it gets to one of our Scottish folks who can complete the final leg.

It doesn't need to go via the shortest route

Just the one Scottish member?   ;D

Those were happy times.

Anyone remember Sam Walker's tour of the country, staying with different forumites?  That got cut short, mind, when his ankle got hurty.

What to do with the baton at the end of the ride?

Donate it to a good real ale pub, perhaps, as an object to inspire an annual pilgrimage?

We did a 100-mile rowing relay on our stretch of river in Derby, which is one mile long.  The Baton was a GPS Tracker device.  So we could follow the progress on the GPS manufacturer's website, to which the tracker uploads its position every two minutes.

This would make transfers a whole lot easier.  The recipient could watch the baton make its way towards the pre-arranged transfer point.

I commend this solution to the house.  It might need some battery top-up from suitably-equipped bikes on the way.  And a bit of credit put onto the tracker's Pay-as-you-go SIM card.

If the LEJoG route goes east of t'Pennines, then I'd be most eager to do a stint to/from/through Derby.

Sorry, I've just read the rest of the thread, and realised I'd jumped to the (wrong) conclusion that this would be some kind of sponsored Race-Against-Time-stylee all-out-blat to see how fast one could get the baton from one end to the other by human power.

If it's just a bit of pootling/pottering social fun, then the GPS-baton is a rubbish idea.  (As it would give away, by reporting to the interweb, the home address of anyone unable to hand it over on the same day!)

As you were...

Jurek and I witnessed one such interface after a FNRttC  :( I felt a bit bad afterwards as I'd watched them attach the bike to the car in the car park, and I'd noted the barrier in a peripheral sort of way, but I just didn't do the interpolation.

Where possible, I think stages of this great event ought to be on Forum Rides so that two parties can meet at an agreed hostelry for lunch and a handover. The baton can be passed frequently between members of the group.

Re: YACF LEJoG Relay - VOLUNTEERS
« Reply #20 on: 12 November, 2010, 09:28:27 pm »
OK, I'm looking for a volunteer for stage 1.  Starting with the baton at Lands End and ending somewhere that is not Lands End, into the hand of another Forumite (or group of Forumites) that will take it elsewhere.

I'll create the baton (note.  I have no experience of wood carving but I have a broom, a saw and a Stanley knife).

I think there should be some rules:

Rule 1.  Every handover should be well documented by photographs and ride-reports.

Rule 2.  I can't think of any more rules.

So, if someone volunteers to receive the baton, ride with it to LE, have a photo taken there whilst holding baton, then arrange it's next handover (via this thread), I'll post the baton to them.

Volunteer please.

If we have any more volunteers for other stages then please make yourself known and we'll try to get the baton to you.

Note.  This is a marathon, not a sprint.  It's more important that everyone gets to handover the baton (and therefore enjoy a nice ride and a pint with another YACFer)  than to get the baton to JoG in record time.

Edit.  That just became rule 2

Good idea.
How about a Cornish forum ride to start things off? A group photo at Land's End with the baton and from there visit some pubs etcans pass the baton on to a local forummer, or have one of us ride until we can pass it on to someone else.
A ride report from each baton holder is a must. It will probably make for a good read once it's finished. I want in.

I could do Royston or Duxford to Huntingdon or thereabouts. Anyone want to carry the baton across Essex/Herts from kcass to me?
