It's fish pie tonight, after three weeks of no fish (a low iodine period before thyroid treatment).

A very nice salad with smoked mackerel. Nothing home grown yet unfortunately

I don't generally have hot food in the evening. I seem to sleep much better as a result.
Salad No 1: Potato, mayo, nutmeg, pepper, dill & spring onions.
Salad No 2: Rocket, grated carrot, garlic, pepper dressed with home made balsamic vinegar, garlicky olive oil & dijon mustard.
Salad No 3: White cabbage, grated carrot, red onion, pepper & mayo.

I'm treating myself tonight.

Pork chop with Stilton and sage, accompanied by roast veg, roast tomatoes and steamed chard.  All washed down with a bottle of La Bacca (100% Nerello Mascalese from Sicily).

Lunch today is a Dishoom Kejriwal.
A fried / baked egg on top of chilli cheese toast.
Not done one of these for a while.
Nom.

Lunch today is a Dishoom Kejriwal.

Marvellous!

We made the Dishoom chicken biryani last week. Also rather excellent.

Sainos bung-in-the-oven Chicken Jalfrezi & rice, (with added Encona hot chilli sauce and freshly chopped coriander).
Just done a 15hr day  (Fruit-named computer company launched a new product today) fuelled only by couple of sarnies, copious amounts of Earl Grey tea and four satsumas.
Normally, I'd eat only  salad of an evening.
But right now, I need something hot.
Only 10 minutes 'til it is ready...

Lunch today is a Dishoom Kejriwal.

I followed your inspiration and made Kejriwal for brunch on Sunday. Being greedy, I doubled up on the eggs and toast (but standard quantity of the chilli-cheese mix)

Also made the chicken biryani again over the weekend (no pics). It is super tasty. Highly recommended.

(Who doesn't love a good biryani? Idiots, that's who. I dial down the chilli content in deference to my wife but would like to have a go at making it at full power some time.)

So I just tried the chicken biryani for the first time!
It is very good.
It was a bit fiddly because I had to make all the sub-recipes from scratch, ie the garlic and ginger pastes.
I also had to go shopping for various bits and bobs, including saffron to make the saffron water.

I didn't find it very hot, the deggi mirch is quite mild, and the fresh green chillies were de-seeded.

I didn’t bother with the deggi mirch, used chili powder instead. Though I think deggi mirch is more like paprika, more about colour and flavour than heat.

Yea, deggi mirch is quite a different thing to normal chilli powder. Much more mild.

I'm going to say the result was good, but I think it could be better.

This recipe has the raw marinated meat going into the pot, then par-boiled rice on top (with some topings) but no further liquid, then sealed and baked.
The meat cooks by baking and whatever steam comes from the wetness of the rice.
The resulting rice is soft, but well cooked.

The Ottolenghi baked rice dish with confit garlic and tomatos has you bake the veg first, then pour dry un-cooked rice on top, then add the liquid. It's then sealed and baked.
This gives a drier rice with a slight crunch, which I like.

I'm considering a hybrid recipe, where I marinade the chicken the same, then perhaps bake it for 5 or 10 mins to get it up to temperature, then do the Ottolenghi thing of adding the rice dry and then adding the liquid and sealing and baking.  The idea being to make basically the same dish, but with the rice being a bit more dry and crisp. I feel an experiment coming on.
