Booking online has just opened. http://www.mildenhallrally.org.uk/startpage.htm
I was going to try and organise getting bookings for all together but with moving this week I don't think I have the time to sort it out.
It does say to put down anyone you want to pitch next to, so if we put yacf down as the cycle club we may get booked together.
So who's going?
Rich
-
I might pop up for a day again if there's a non-too-speedy ride in the offing.
-
I'm going, but not camping unless I get thrown out by then.
-
Have just booked online with Paypal and there is an option on there that asks who you want to camp next too.
I put yacf, so if others do we'll see what happens.
Rich
-
Hoping to come - but that will be dependant on work...
And you've reminded me that Kevin still hasn't told me how much I owe him, and the work was done over a year ago.
-
Yes Ill be going enjoyed it last year despite the rain!
-
Dates noted, but still not sure what I'm up to around that time. If I do make it, hopefully I'll be healthier than I was last year and actually be able to enjoy myself a bit. ::-)
-
i shall be attending but camping at west row as normal :)
-
And for any that know him, Anto Kelly is coming over from Ireland to mine and will be cycling over with us.
Rich
-
Any ideas for a YACF day/night ride?
http://www.discoversuffolk.org.uk/userfiles/Leaflets/Cycling%20and%20horseriding/Newmarket%20Rides%20leaflet%20web.pdf
http://www.discoversuffolk.org.uk/userfiles/Leaflets/Cycling%20and%20horseriding/Cycle%20South%20Suffolk%20full%20leaflet%20reduced.pdf
ps the organisers seem to be really good about trying to get groups together on the ground as it were. Last year we were pretty much one group. The collective chinese take away in the semi light was rather good I seem to recall.
-
I'll be around for this. No camping though as my house is only 10 miles away!
There was a great WARTY ride from Mildenhall last year I remember, well I did some of it, but a couple of us got lost and then were forced to wait in the pub for ages. Torture, it was. And then on the way home I got ABSOLUTELY drenched after one of those huge dark RAINclouds wandered my way.
-
i am sure i could add more torture of that kind for you this year as well if you like ;)
-
We are thinking about doing this. Mrs. Wow said she enjoyed it last year which, considering the difficulty I had in getting her camping, is a bit startling. It was her only camping trip of the year.
It currently depends on Other Things. I am very keen to make up for lost time, since we are not having our customary Main Tour in the May half-term hol.
-
Littlewheel and I have just booked a pitch. Or rather, I have booked the pitch as she is somewhat asleep. We will almost certainly be on our way back from a tour of the Isles, so if there are orders for "innocent whisky" ......................
-
Now we have a Duck at home, we are starting to plan ahead again.
Mildenhall is definitely a strong option.
-
-
Will be there this year.
Booked in at the Travelodge though.

Bump O:-)

And for any that know him, Anto Kelly is coming over from Ireland to mine and will be cycling over with us.
Scratch that, he can't make it know. If the spaces fill up he has a pitch that he'd sell on.
We're still going, and currently looking at a 4 day ride home around East Anglia
Rich

We're going with the new (to us) camper. Whole family, I think my son will hate me.
-
Do we have a list of likely attendees as yet?
-
We're going with the new (to us) camper. Whole family, I think my son will hate me.
Booked, gonna ride the 50k as a family with the dogs in a trailer hopefully. Come and watch it'll be chaos.
-
We are hoping to be there. :) Haven't booked yet though.
-
great
-
I'm missing it for the first time in about ten years :-\ I could only get the time off for either Mildenhall or York and chose York
Have a good one.
-
Just booked :)
-
York was cancelled ???
-
Bump
-
Just been discussing this with barakta.
It's all currently in limbo pending a ruling on her work commitments, but if she's up for it, I expect we'll booking a motor pitch[1] and turning up with a tent-you-can-stand-up-in and a Tesco Value airbed (which seems to be the most barakta-friendly of transportable sleeping arrangements).
If she can't make it, I'll be booking in a cycle camping style.
[1] Hopefully avoiding the need for any more Comedy Off-Roading In Mildly Inappropriate Vans.
-
Pitch booked, van booked.

Booked

Booked
That took a fair amount of bumping before you finally booked! :P
-
Don't know what we are doing yet. Mrs. Wow's mother may need visiting.
-
I'm attempting to recruit Basil, on account of a spare seat in the van. Nikki also expressed interest, but can't make the whole weekend.
-
Just trying to arrange a tandem (recumbent one of course 8)) for the week so can see how we get on touring with one.
It will save Dawn having to load my bike up with all the extra baggage to slow me down ;D
Rich
-
We haven't been before. I've paid but haven't had anything back, can I arrive on Saturday, who are the organisers to contact?
-
The main organisers are Mark and Mandy Burchett. email: mark@burchett.org.uk
-
I have just booked a cycle camping pitch. I think Mrs. Wow and I will probably get the train to Marks Tey on the Friday and cycle from there. Last year, train-specific tickets to Kennet were just too much hassle.
Another game of ride-and-seek on the Saturday? ;D
-
Another game of ride-and-seek on the Saturday? ;D
Umm.... someone else can do the chasing down of lost sheep this year, TYVM.
-
I might do one of the Audaxes from Mildenhall....not done one before. Anyone else? It would only be the 100km, no sleeping is bus shelters for me (and not just because I saw some crash their car into one yesterday :o)
Wowbagger, I don't think the 'train specific' tickets apply to the little train to Kennett. My understanding of they system is that there is one section of the journey where you have to get on the right train and the rest of it doesn't matter. For instance I went to Bath last week and could get:
Any train to Cambridge...
...Any train to That London so long as I was on...
...The 11am FGW to Bath. That one had seat reservations, none of the others did.
The main problem is that Kennett only has a train every two hours! Newmarket to Mildenhall is not far either, and those are hourly.
-
The ticket was from Southend to Kennett and the only reserved bit was from Colchester to Ipswich or some such, on a train that didn't stop at Shenfield. That meant 4 trains (Southend-Shenfield-Colchester-Ipswich-Kennett) and in the end I paid for a walk-on ticket at Ipswich on the way home so that we wouldn't have to change trains with full-loaded tourers yet again. It also saved about 45 minutes hanging around. Those tickets were £8 each.
Marks Tey is just two trains and gives us a nice 45ish mile pootle to Mildenhall. FWIW, Morrisette, my route was borne out of the 100k audax but is nicer, using as it does the tiny lanes north of Glemsford rather than the more boring roads from Clare, which we will have ridden the previous day from Marks Tey. There's a post about it somewhere on an old Mildenhall Rally thread.
-
Campsite & trains to & from Ely booked.
Sadly I couldn't persuade my sister to attend..... I think she's seen too many photos & heard too many stories about you lot!
-
Email from Mandy yesterday computer has been playing up and will be sending out camping confirmations soon.
Dear Camper,
Firstly I would like to apologies for the delay in dealing with your booking, due to the lovely weather we are having I keep going out on my bike!!
I have now dealt with your booking but at present am unable to send confirmation as we been without our own broadband connection for the past week and still waiting for it to be sorted. At present I am having to connect a very old laptop via wifi via our neighbours router!
As soon as we are reconnected and I can access internet via my pc, in conjuction with the database I will forward your confirmation.
Regards
Mandy Burchett

-
Yeah, she has my sympathy.
-
Mildenhall do a tremendous job, organising such a big event for a such a little rural cycle club.
When I started going, the club was even doing the catering and putting up the marquees themselves.
-
I think I've booked!
Waiting for confirmation messages etc.
This will be my first ever cycling rally!
Terry

Due to a shortage of time between other tours, (I get home on Wednesday 21st and leave again on 29th) I shall be as a first going to the rally in the car. As usual I have requested a pitch on the main field near the tennis courts. As I shall have the car I shall also take my large tent with better cooking facilities, so if anyone want make use of it or just to have a cuppa, wonder over and find me.
-
Bikepacker...... a car..... whatever next....strewth.
-
It has been so long since I have driven it maybe I should take a refresher driving course. ;) ;)
-
Mrs. Wow has noticed that when I drive I lean over when I go round corners.
-

We'll be doing likewise (well, can't vouch for the cooking facilities, but will have the sort of tent that people tend to take the piss out of until it rains).

I've signed up for the 100km Audax.
-
Hoping to make this the Little Duck's first cycle camping trip.
Apologies in advance if he gets shouty. :-[

The weather forecast is looking favourable

Excellent! I shall make sure I come over then. It was touch & go otherwise, what with the pointschasing an all that.
-
i'd forgotten about this, but i might have sunday free and itd be great to meet Little Duck... the audax rides are on saturday, arent they? It's a handy 50 miles from here to there, I could make a nice century out of it if there will be people about at lunchtime for a
beer coffee?
-
My booking confirmation email arrived this morning. I should be there some time on Friday afternoon
-
Early evening for me.
-
We [J & I] will be there Friday afternoon, having been touring for a couple of days. Soupy is going to arrive from home about then, but we can only stay for the one night :'(
-
Jan and I will be catching the 10.12 from Prittlewell, arriving at Marks Tey at 11.33 and then cycling the 45 miles or so to Mildenhall. We are probably going to be en tandemme.
I would imagine that we will arrive around 6.30 pm.
Tent up, curry house?
-
I will be setting off tomorrow and cycling / camping from Birmingham.
Goodness knows when I will arrive at Mildenhall - the main thing will be to arrive at Mildenhall!
Looking forward to seeing you all!
Terry
-
Unfortunately, I shall be unable to make it. I'll be in Salisbury...
I shall expect photos and a report on what weird and wonderful machine Kevin brought along in the hope I'd buy it. Say hello to him for me - and remind him he owes me a bill! Two years and he's still not told me how much I owe him...

If you get to the C&CC site at St Neots on Thursday night, you will probably find a few others making for Mildenhall. Normally I would be there but this year my arrangements have changed.
-
We're arriving Friday. We'll be on our way to a week in north Norfolk so will be heavily equipped and also with children and dogs. See you there, we're the bright yellow camper, come by to say hi.

We're touring to Mildenhall from Essex.....via St Neots! Going to the Shuttleworth Collection Thursday, moving on to the rally Friday.
-
If you are at St. Neots C and C let me know will come over and say hello.
-
i will be leaving today after lunch for milldenhall . i should get to west row tomorrow afternoon if all goes to plan :)
-
Who is up for a ride on Saturday?
I have plotted a modification of the normal route here:-
http://www.bikehike.co.uk/mapview.php?lnk=http://peter.chesspod.com/routes/eastanglia/mildenhall2013.gpx
There is already a small amendment to that route. I thought that it might be a nice idea to cycle through Ickworth Park (NT) but there's only one official entrance, in Horringer, and it costs £5 to get in. I suspect that, being YACFers, we could gatecrash from the north and leave via the main gate, but I'll be carrying on a little further along NCN 51 and then turning right towards Horringer.
11ses in Risby, lunch at the Queen's Head, Hawkedon.
-
Too far for my kids but if you're recommending those roads we'll trace some of it and hopefully bump into you, if you know what I mean.
-
Be aware that the A11 crossing is level, and part of a Sustrans route. Last year we had to wait quite a while to get across in the morning, but in the afternoon it was less busy.
Because it's an elongated route it's not difficult to hop between the two legs, as it were.
-
I expect that's too far for barakta, who has all of about 333km and one proper hill to her name this year. Suspect we'll follow as far as Risby, and then either take a more direct route to Hawkedon, or head back to Mildenhall.
-
Something to bear in mind when considering routes into/out of Mildenhall is the current state of Barton Mills roundabout, and how that might affect cycle crossings.
Fboab and I did a check-ride of the Mildenhall 300 yesterday, and we were taken aback when, driving out from Mildenhall in the evening, the layout of the Fiveways roundabout had completely changed from the morning - lanes and cones had been moved all over, and priorities changed.
The place is a mess at the moment - just something to consider.
-
We aren't going to be up for a long ride, unfortunately.
-
We might get out for a short bicyclical saunter to a pub, perhaps ;)

That actually could be an advantage to us crossing a way up the road. Are there significant tailbacks along the A11?

...sort of thing.

Or a cafe, of course. I don't really want to run the risk of not getting a cup of tea. :o
-
Good point. Barakta will need fuel for the return trip.

Lizzie's cafe in Risby is a control on the 100k, and will have me in it. :)
Get there before 11:30 if you want/need to avoid me. ;)
Me & whoever will roll rally-wards after the control closes, so you might have to hone your hiding skills in the early evening.

I dare say the cafe might also have tea and perhaps even cake...
-
Hmm... if that's the cafe we usually go to (I pedal & follow), we might be able to geet that far before a leisurely pot of tea, some refreshment for the Little Duck, then trundle home with our good friends baraktankim. :)

As I understand it - all the time, currently.
-
Can these various needs be met by conspiring on a night ride?
-
For me, the recovery from a night ride happens at home, in a comfortable armchair with a considerable amount of snoring. That wouldn't happen with lots of cycling-rally related extraneous noise.
-
Count me in for the 50-miler.
Wow, can you name a suitable meeting place & time for Sat morning for those of us not camping there on Friday, please? I'll be trundling over from Ely in the morning.
-
We'll be making a family ride up, so will head for that cafe and then find a pub on the way back before the jumble at 5.30 I think. Anyone is more than welcome to tag along.
-
How about 10 am at the roundabout outside the Rally office?
-
Sounds good but I have signed up for an audax.... :-\
They are now saying rain for Saturday :( after promising a heatwave and nice weather. Bah.
-
Well, the met office says cloudy but doesn't mention rain. The Norwegians say it will be pissing down.
-

We'd be out. The Little Duck couldn't manage it.
-
Well, the met office says cloudy but doesn't mention rain. The Norwegians say it will be pissing down.
Now even the Met Office is forecasting rain, albeit "light rain".
That will be OK. I've just come back from Wales.
-
I'm excited now, rain or no. Booked tickets last night. Butterfly is heading up to Cambridge to drop off her bike, and I'm jealous even of that.
There won't be a TGL with us this time, but he'll be getting plenty of cycle camping this autumn anyway. But we will have a son there, albeit one who can't ride quite so well. He's got time to catch up. :D

No TGL, :( Hope he's doing OK with everything
-
He's fine, and will be enrolling at college today.
-
I'd be up for a ride of some sort on the Saturday.
I'll be riding over on Saturday, but remember, I only live 15 miles from Mildenhall, so if any of you need help/repairs/supplies then give me a call - Probably about 50% of the YACFers attending already have my number.
-
We can play the ride by ear, as it were. If we are really getting pissed off with the rain we can turn right a mile or so after Hartest and go straight to Hawkedon and the pub.
-

except silly o'clock. it was fine about 2:40am on Weds morning. :P
-
Does that mean that those of us approaching at sensible o'clock from a Huntingdon direction in a motorised manner might be better off on a cyclist-style back-roads route for the final approach to Mildenhall?
-
Does that mean that those of us approaching at sensible o'clock from a Huntingdon direction in a motorised manner might be better off on a cyclist-style back-roads route for the final approach to Mildenhall?
All approaches to the Barton Mills roundabout are subject to delays - it all depends what manner of mayhem is going on in the roadworks further North. The roundabout itself is single file - rather than two lanes.
I'd imagine peak times on the BH weekend, it'll be slow going.
-
Righty. Will come in via Freckenham and avoid that bit entirely, then.
-
dont forget to wave at my dad in fordham!
-
Have fun guys. Remember it's the law that it always rains at Mildenhall*
Also remember not to eat at that awful 'N Thai Sing' restaurant where they messed up all our orders, blamed us, served portions of rice smaller than my fist, and threw the menus at us. Charlotte/Julian/Phil/RichForrest will remember.
*I'm saying this to make myself feel better
-
We are all packed and ready for the ride over tomorrow morning.
Hopefully arriving around 4ish. 6th year in a row for me (I think?!) and Dawn's 2nd.
Route sorted for the ride back via Norwich, Sheringham, Downham Mkt and St Neots. Weather booked and should be a good ride round over 4 days
-
We've packed some stuff, and placed SPD shoes in prominent places.
I've said it before, but car camping is much more confusing than cycle camping, as you can't just make sure the right panniers have the relevant things in them.
-
Looking forward to this, the ride and the company. Apparently we may have a repeat of last year weather wise on Saturday tho' but. Curry on Friday sounds really good::-) Didn't realise you were in MK Rich. Have not had a chance to look at my camping kit so will all be a bit last minute.
-
Didn't realise you were in MK Rich.
Yes, been here since '76 ;D
-
Little wheel and I are currently hot footing it down the M6 having completed a little tour of the Outer Hebrides and other bits of the Western Isles. We plan to be at Mildenhall on Saturday afternoon, and look forward to catching up with fellow YACFers that evening. Having drunk all the whisky we had previously purchased, a stop off at a supermarket will be made. Can't guarantee transporting the liquor in an Innocent juice bottle a la AndrewC though............
-
I shall be riding up tomorrow afternoon. See you there!
-
Jan and I will be leaving Marks Tey at about 11.30 and following this route:-
http://www.bikehike.co.uk/mapview.php?lnk=http://peter.chesspod.com/routes/eastanglia/mkt-milden.gpx
We will be on the tandem. I had considered having lunch in the King's Head, Pebmarsh, but it seems that that pub is no more. The Pheasant, near Gestingthorpe, seems a bit poncey and overpriced so we will probably potter on towards Clare and, if they are still serving, go to the Bell, which starts a beer festival tomorrow. There is also a tea room not far away which is a good substitute.
-
We can play the ride by ear, as it were. If we are really getting pissed off with the rain we can turn right a mile or so after Hartest and go straight to Hawkedon and the pub.
Trivia time: Which famous tall cycling person lives in Hartest? (Clue: his bike spent a long time locked outside Canterbury Cathedral)
-
I'm having a think about the ride I'm organising.
The forecast for tomorrow is wet. The forecast for Sunday is dry and sunny.
What would the ramifications be if we switched the ride to Sunday instead?
I'm just asking at the moment. My plan is still to do the ride tomorrow. If there is an overwhelming demand for change I'll consider it, but of course that would be no good for people coming from outside the rally to take part. They need to know.
-
We're delaying our arrival due to weather.
-
What would the ramifications be if we switched the ride to Sunday instead?
I suspect a couple of people, maybe more, from this household, would ride out to meet you for a sandwich/beer.
-
I'd be up for doing your ride if you changed it to be on the Sunday. My plan for the audax is to look out of the window on Saturday morning. If it's lashing down, I'm afraid I won't be taking part. It's meant to be sort of fun, isn't it?!
Would the pub need to be booked for a big group on a Sunday? or would it just be CAKE?
-
Will be there sometime this afternoon (Friday). Booked into the Travelodge though and hoping to ride the 200k tomorrow but will depend on the weather!
Will put my (purple) YACF jersey on and look forward to meeting others at the Rally Ground
-
I haven't booked the pub - Queen's Head in Hawkedon. I have their number though.
-
I'm easy , but dry riding is better than wet!
-
I'm currently on the train to Ely.
-
I'm on the train on the way to Cambridge :)
-
We have ordered lunch at the 5 Bells, Colne Engaine. This is going to be s long, hot afternoon.
-
Currently in a rather wet West Wales. We have decided not to bring this weather over to you.
We're stopping here to ensure the rain stays here too. Basically, we're taking one for the team.
Have a good week end all.
-
Okay, barakta and I are setting off now.
-
At the Rally site. I have just met Butterfly and been introduced to our smallest & cutest member!
-
Aha! They got there OK. :D
-
Does anyone have a gpx of either the 300 or 200 routes? Still undecided which to do... left it rather last-minute!
-
I have the 300.. here (https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=75036.msg1548857#msg1548857)
(Trying to keep Audax in it's proper home)
-
Tiffin in Clare. Eta now 8.15..
-
After 6pm. Still at work doing emergency stuff... Might have to be here over the weekend too. Bah.
Weather forecasts for this area overnight & Saturday to late afternoon are not good (rain & more rain, & Met Office weather warning for rain) - hope you campers can sleep through it.
If I don't get to see anyone there, hope you have a great time.
-
Fish & chip van is here until 9 o'clock.
-
If we aren't riding on Saturday, I'll probably get some jobs done in the morning and ride over in the afternoon, returning on Sunday if we are riding.
Perhaps I'll be back on Monday with the Wobblebike/Spincycle
-
Tiffin in Clare. Eta now 8.15..
No it wasn't, I was still riding home at 1721, tiffin didn't happen until 1803.
;)
-
With the forecast as it is, I have pitched my tent like a Motherfucker...
-
Ok, executive decision. Ride will be on Sunday.
-
Thanks for the text Wow to this effect but I'm not coming to Mildenhall this year.
I am, instead, attending a party dressed in a cancan dancer's outfit.
-
We need photos!
There is a forum quorum here atm. We are acutely aware of the forthcoming weather.
-
Bed-time bog visit. There seems to be an open invitation to eat bacon at Canardly's tent in the morning.
-
Usual form. I remember Canardly on duty, feeding bacon to the masses at Long Itchington.
-
We're finally settled in our somewhat palatial tent, in prime position for the bacon in the morning. I'm knackered after a day of driving - those van things are surprisingly hard to pedal!
I see the latest forecast mentions hail in the morning. Nice.
-
Loo o'clock. Everything's still dry...
Oh, looks like the weather forecast has been recalculated to account for the presence of my rainlegs.
-
Just back from the bogs. It started raining when I was enthroned. There is a man out the who started selling burgers before 6am.
-
Communally breakfasting in the school hall. Still raining ....
-
I have just said hello to a lady from my Pilates class.
-
I have just said hello to a lady from my Pilates class.
It's been a couple of years that you've been doing Pilates, why have you taken so long to say hello? ;D
-
We're in the traditional YACF corner of the hall, having fed barakta her usual breakfast of tea and codeine. Everyone else seems to have vanished, though.

Ok, executive decision. Ride will be on Sunday.
I will attempt to get to work early-ish tomorrow and get across to Mildenhall from Downham Market. That could be a 100+ mile day; better have porridge & make some cake.
-
Have retired to the pub, leaving card stamping duties on the 100km audax to boab and boablets.
-
In a pub with sticky tables. Drinking ale and waiting for food.
-
Barakta and I have made use of the showers. We remembered to bring waterproof clothing and mobile phones this time, but the rain never became anything more than a moderate drizzle.
"At least it's not like school PE" she said. I pointed out that it was exactly like school PE, and offered to find someone to spray deodorant in her face for the full effect.

I clearly remember communal showers that barely came up to my chest level at Mildenhall...probably with people smaller than me in mind, it being a school..
-
I partook of a shower earlier. I have no particular problem with their height as I can easily bend down to wash my face and hair. It is the lack of sprays on some of the nozzles which can, unless you are paying attention, lead to a slap in the testicles by s jet of hot water. The other problem is moreinsidious: there is a cold water pipe at ceiling level above the clothes hooks and this drips condensation on your clothes.

Did the 105km event with a friend. Nice ride, bit damp, glad I didn't do the 200km.
Thanks to Dennis and team for their organisation.
Gibbo.

In curry house. We have WiFi.

Well done for not mentioning that you won ;-)

We are in the pub in Bury, which is not very Mildenhally to be honest. I appear to have collected a head injury.
-
Superb dhansak. Ready for bed now.
-
However, Turista has just announced that tonight is his 100th in his Saunders Spacepacker.
Cheers.
-
It's all gone a bit silly at this end of the field. Running, hiccups, discussion of waterboarding, no rain on tent noise...
Oh, and an accidental car horn.
-
And considerable consternation here too: I awoke, desperate for the lavatory and when I got here I discovered that it isn't even midnight yet.
Such is the influence of ale and dhansak.
-
Strike 2: lentils and a deflated downmat.
-
Loo o'clock here too. It's a bit wet out there...
-
Still raining!

What happened? :o Hope you are okay.
-
Something seems to have gone wrong with the rain?!?
Maybe it all got used up at 4am?
-
Rain appears to have stopped. I've had tea & cereal, now lounging within tent listening to other people be active.
-

The infinite "Do While" loop that the rain was using seems to have transferred to your Android. This has had two effects: The rain has stopped and you keep saying the same thing. (0736, 0740, 0844)
-
Well, it's nearly 2pm and I am still at work. So much for getting in early & then coming on to the pub. ::-) I came by car to make things quicker, so I didn't even get a ride in. And I am in tomorrow as well at 7am. Will I get this weekend back?
Ah well. Hope you all had / are having / will have a good ride & pub lunch. Sun's out! :)
-
The Queen's Head in Hawkedon is massively overpriced and overwasped.
-
And the service is crap as well so we'll do something else next year.
-
I have decided to take upon myself the arduous task of trying out all the pubs in the square between Bury, Long Melford, Hundon and Newmarket, over the winter, in order to recommend a different destination for 2014.
It's a tough job, but I'm willing to suffer for the good of the group.
I suspect Chris is caring enough to assist me in this task.

Modesty prevented me... it's not a race you know ;)

Went there for a Christmas do last year and agree with your statement.
-
We bought a set dinner for 6 from the Chinese and were joined by Badger otp and Mrs Badger, who were married a fortnight ago today. There is now beer.
-
S splendid evening eating, drinking and nattering. Home tomorrow. Pembrokeshire Thursday.
-
I forgot to mention an impressive bit of roadkill on yesterday's ride: a mink! I had never seen one before, alive or dead.
-
Bed-time bog visit. There seems to be an open invitation to eat bacon at Canardly's tent in the morning.
Just back from the bogs. It started raining when I was enthroned. There is a man out the who started selling burgers before 6am.
A seven hour bog visit??

And what's wrong with that?
-
As an outsider on this event, I'm getting the feeling that Mildenhall Rally only consists of Wow and Kim's visits to the bogs and a second rate pub!
-
Untrue. We also had rain.
-
Meant to ask if anyone knows what happened to Ken and Nick Bowman of Iceni Velo? They started the 100km ride and we half expected them to join us at some stage having ridden with them on a CC Sudbury Audax from Bildeston so we kept an eye open. It wasn't until we got back and noticed their car had gone that made us wonder what happened. A txt from Dennis just said they were DNF, so I hope it was nothing more than a mechanical.
Gibbo.
-

Oh, excellent. I must see if I can get a pass to next years event. :)
-
We're home! What an astonishing weekend. Huge thanks to everyone who helped us.
-
We are rehydrating and carbo-loading at the 5 bells, Colne Engaine. 8 Mike's to our train.
We were overtaken by bobb somewhere near Barrow.
-
Is that Mike otp, and his seven cycling mates who are also named Mike?
-
Back home in sunny Liverpeule.... the journey was enlivened by the train manager, who asked everyone to have their "tickets, passes or excuses" ready, told us at Sheffield that we were entering the capital of "The Peoples Republic of South Yorkshire" (President in exile is obviously Clarion) and at Liverpool South Parkway (serves Liverpool JL airport) "change here for Malaga & Alicante"..... :)
-
It was a lovely weekend with friends , despite the weather on Saturday and the crap pub experience on Sunday. Baby Nye made loads of new admirers and was spoffled by everyone :D
A few grim bits though, Clarion's unpleasant experience on Friday, getting back on Sunday and hearing that a couple on a tandem had been hit by a car Tandem-cycle-rider-is-fighting-for-her-life-after-A11-crash (http://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/News/Tandem-cycle-rider-is-fighting-for-her-life-after-A11-crash-20130825192053.htm) and being warned of multiple bike thefts from the rally ground >:(
Photos will be posted later..

I'm going there for lunch on Wednesday with the church walking group!

Just got back. Great weekend. Hot too, although somewhat damp to start (understatement!)

Back in smoggy Brummingham having dropped off turista. Next year I intend to spend more time cycling than driving, though. Might have to enter an audax to be on the safe side.
I predict the weekend is going to end with an argument about the fuel gauge in the van tomorrow morning, as I've just stuck 25 litres in and the level hasn't gone up. >:(
ETA: Did any of the bikes that hitched a lift in our van have SRAM kit on them? I've found a SRAM branded pingfuckit (small, black end cap looking thing) rolling around in the back. It may have come from the trike, but it's not something I recognise.
-
We put in a tremendous burst if speed to catch the 7.18 from Marks Tey to find that it didn't exist. Instead we caught the 7.14, which had been delayed by disruptive passengers, arriving at 7.22. These passengers were just a little too disruptive because we arrived in Shenfield to see out connection disappearing, so we are stuck here for half an hour. Bugger.
-
A fine week end tainted somewhat by the events highlighted by Andrewc above.
-
Is that Mike otp, and his seven cycling mates who are also named Mike?
yup. We are becoming a universal measurement - 'How far to London? 35 Mikes.
They're a bit like Miles but with more giggles.
-
Those Mike's can easily be converted to Kim O'Litres.
We are home, my arse is sore and the fish and chip shop is shut.
I need food.

That was quite an experience, a three day journey to get there. A fantastic night sleeping on my bivvy bag "near" Draycote water with a fantastic full moon. The next night in the bivvy was my third ever and my first experience of rain in one! Survived that in a field near Higham Ferrers then a night in a campsite to shower and relax, then a recovery ride to Mildenhall....where friendships were made and deepened.
Did the 105km Audax in the drizzle and and the abbreviated YACF ride and so missed the Pub lunch.
I had some fun playing Ready Steady Cook with the wood gas stove and yes celebrated my 100th and 101st nights in my tent.
Among this, I am angry at Clarion's experience - so plus one to what Andrew said.
Kim thank you for spending some hours driving and getting me home safely.
Now I still have a bag of Suffolk Turnips and some Red Onions (and not much else in the kitchen!), back to work in the morning.
Yeah it rained but we had a fabulously sunny morning this morning to dry everything out.
What a lot of fun.

Report on the local news this morning of 4 more bike thefts from the rally on Sunday night. >:(

BTW, 4 bikes were nicked from Mark, the orgainiser's property in the week before the rally. >:(

We were the beneficiaries of the company of a splendid specimen of humanity on the train between Shenfield and Wickford. This female, a stereotypically Essex peroxide blonde, started off by talking to her daughter on the telephone. The daughter, who was clearly very young, was being looked after by someone else (grandparent?) whilst our travelling companion lived it up on the town for the day.
The conversation was revolting in its tweeness. There were lots of references to "princess" and to a pink hand-bag gift which had made her daughter happy. After the conversation ended, she changed the subject and I'll paraphrase what I remember of her next sentence.
"Fuck me I've eaten like a fucking pig today. I've had a fucking Whopper, fucking chicken nuggets, fucking fries, fucking doughnuts and a load of fucking chocolate. I am a fucking fat greedy cunt!"
After this enlightening diatribe she proceeded to make personal remarks about a chap who was sitting opposite her and kept nodding off. There was so much which was memorable about this absolute jewel in the firmament of chavvery which is south Essex but which, sadly, I am unable to recall accurately. I was mesmerised, as was Mrs. Wow. It was quite a relief when she and her two companions alighted at Wickford. It was as though my brain held up a notice "Normal service will be resumed as soon as possible."

^^^ Ah the joys of public transport, I've had similar experiences. A family group sitting on the floor by the carriage doors, pissed as farts, loudly discussing the availability of drugs in Chelmsford is a memory I can't erase - much as I try.
Mind you, I sometimes wonder what these people think of us who regard ourselves as being "normal". I bet they're equally disparaging.
-
Great meeting up again.
Had an uneventful drive home, as soon as the car was unloaded I got on the bike and did a 20 mile ride around our lovely lanes. It was great to be back riding.
-
I predict the weekend is going to end with an argument about the fuel gauge in the van tomorrow morning, as I've just stuck 25 litres in and the level hasn't gone up. >:(
Thankfully, I was able to persuade the fuel gauge to catch up with reality by taking the van on a round trip to the supermarket. I'm going to blame overenthusiastic low-pass filtering of the sensor reading and/or French electrics. Hopefully the return should now be uneventful.
ETA: It was.

One friend at church is a warrented MET officer who now sits in a back office due to sight issues.
He commutes by train and was approached on one journey by the passenger sat next to him who was trying to sell him all sorts of narcotics. He was then passed on the train by a couple of british transport police officers. On the pretence of going to the gents he was able to approach the BTP for support and returned to his seat to identify himself to his unfortunate travelling companion who was arrested by the BTP officers for one of the easiest drug busts possible. ;D

I quite understand your bewilderment, Wowbagger. It's the fucking chocolate. You can't have fucking chocolate with a fucking Whopper, fucking nuggets, fucking fries and fucking doughnuts. It just doesn't fucking go.

I now Pete through work and Bev by association and I can confirm that it was them. I had a beer with their Andy their son, on Friday night and he was expecting Pete home from Hospital on Saturday, but Bev will likely be in Addnebrooks for another week at least.
Bev was airlifted from the scene to Addenbrooks and was initially in intensive care. They have kept her in Cambridge as she was not well enough to travel by Friday, but the transferred Pete to Ipswich during the week. I believe that Pete has a brokien arm and collarbone and has had a couple of operations. Again, I can't be certain (Andy wasn't up to being questioned in detail!) but I beleive that Bev has a broken leg, and badly broken arm ad suffered a head injury also. both the Tandem AND the car are write-offs according to Andy.
Pete was fretting as he'd not seen Bev for a few days and I think Andy was planning to take his Dad back to Cambridge to see her on Sunday if he was up to it.
I'll post more details as and when I get them.
-
Thanks for the update. Fingers are crossed for swift recovery.
