Mail on Mac and Google 2 part authentication

Does anyone use Google's Authenticator? Is it worth the hassle? No matter what I do, Mail repeatedly needs a new verification code to sign in.

The answer to that is that the authentication password needs to be entered into both outgoing and incoming server settings - seems to have fixed it.
