"packing"?
« on: 20 March, 2013, 07:01:16 pm »
I've noticed in other threads that some people refer to stopping before reaching the finish in an audax as "packing", anyone know where that word comes from?

"Packing it in", I assume.

No-one mentioned a sugary comestible sold in squares.

Surely it's a card playing expression. To quit, put one's hand with the rest of the pack.

I packed on an Audax.  I can assure you I meant "Packing it in".

I thought it was about tight trousers.  Anyway, discussion on Audax terms should go on the Audax board - to make it easier for those of us not interested in the mad world of audaxing to ignore.  :)

Is packing an Audax-specific phenomenon?  Surely almost any bike ride has potential for declaring "fuck this, I'm going home".

That is true, but I'd say "fuck this, I'm going home" rather than "packing".  :)

Agreed - I'd never heard the term used in this specific way until I started dabbling in the dark arts audaxing.
Right! What's next?

Ooooh. That sounds like a daft idea.  I am in!

Packing refers to time trialling and road racing too. You can pack on pretty much any organised event but shortening any non-event bike ride can't be packing. You are only changing the route or distance of your non-specific bike ride. Audax and racing are both pass/fail activities.

When I decided to Bail out of the forum ride to Tan Hill last year I described it as packing. It was an informal ride, but the objective was to reach Tan Hill - I didn't make it.

So to you, it was a Ride to Tan Hill, rather than a ride that might include Tan Hill?

When I go for a ride from York to Tan Hill, usually I'd expect Tan Hill to be the destination.

To my mind, a forum ride is more of an 'event' than a solo one. I'll often 'explore' roads or modify a ride (to avoid a rain shower) if it is just me out there.
