Fridges of Selly Oak calendar
« on: 03 October, 2022, 12:35:22 am »
After the success of last year, this clearly now warrants its own thread...

I've lovingly curated another 13 of Silly Oak's finest fly-tipped fridges.

Where will you get them printed? That's a good price, I think.
It is simpler than it looks.

A fellow UoB alumnus has requested Horse's Willy Shops* Of Selly Oak, but I don't think there are 12.

You could chuck in massage parlours*** and curry houses and call it "Nightlife of Selly Oak"?

*chippys that sell saveloys, both circumcised and uncircumcised.

** in the late 80s, you could choose from Cuddles, Penny's Tonal Therapy or The Shape 'n' Health Gym, the latter of which was located conveniently between the campus and the OVT-as-was.

Chippies aren't what they used to be.  Adams Place turned into a Dominos, making the nearest proper chippy the Dolphin (nextdoor to Basil's local).  I expect some of the fried chicken emporia do horse willies, but I haven't looked too closely.  Vodbull and vegan shakes are where it's at these days.

Meanwhile, they're molishing a branch of The Scottish Restaurant up on the retail park, which is currently inconveniencing anyone trying to use the cycle racks.  Apparently they've applied for a 24 hour licence, much to the upset of the sort of people who worry about oiks doing crimes.

I had to resort to googling for massage parlours.  (How did these things used to be advertised?  Was there a particularly stuck-together section of the Yellow Pages?)  Apparently Penny's is the suspicously out-of-place-looking door between the falafel place and the bubbleworks.  The mysterious shop next to the chemist on Oak Tree Lane used to be one called Manyana, but appears not to have survived the pandemic.

If "Penny" actually exists, she must be in her 60s or 70s by now.

The one constant in Selly Oak must be the Dilshad ("the Dilsh").  Survives mainly because it will still do sit-down meals until stupid o'clock, takeaways until even later, and tolerates boorish and or racist students.  Used to have a large fish tank with a one-eyed goldfish.

Kim - when I tried to order (a friend of a friend is a former selly oaker - grew up round the corner from you!) it won't let me pay by credit card without creating a paypal account. Is there any way to pay otherwise?

Is the Selly Oak Shopping Park what used to be called Battery Park BITD?  I was propositioned by a bloke in the toilets of The Great Oak pub there one night, which was apparently gay night.

"Damn and blast Paypal!", said Kim, the words coming easily through force of habit.

I'll PM you some BACS details...

So did I.   Which was nice.  It would have been even nicer if it actually worked.

Presunktly. It let me fill in everything and then refused to process the transaction without the mandatory fields completing, namely email address and username for creating a new paypal account... if I wanted one of those, I wouldn't be trying to pay by credit card would I! Anyway, Kim has provided an alternative so the marathon running former Silly Oaker that I know can get a little xmas surprise :)

Arrived here too

Well, not here here. More there here, with there being where I used to live and which  address PayPal refuses to let me change.

Luckily, there is only a 10 minute walk from here, and I'm on good terms with the current occupier.

Nice calendar. I see Alton Road is doing a lot of the heavy lifting this year.

It was St Edward's Road last year.  I suppose that allows us to triangulate the barycentre of landlord roguery.  (Upper Selly Oak is disappointing fridge-wise.)

Except that's just the most picturesque fridges.  Dawlish Road deserves honourable mention for rubbish ones that didn't make the final cut.

Also, fridges migrate.  Presumably as people move them out of the way, or hope to make them somebody else's problem.  A bit like Biiiins, in that respect.

(Really observant readers will note that 2023's January is the same fridge as 2022's July, because climate change.)
