Certainly was! I can only imagine she had a problem on one of the last corners to drop off the leaders (the camera work really wasn't up to much!) - amazing to come back from that gap, and remarkably poor weather (and commentating).

She may have missed a gear change? It did cause a momentary heart flutter at Chateau Kahn, but apart from that one moment she seemed to ride a near perfect race. Fantastic. :D

Excellent stuff. I must admit I was convinced she had gone too early but what a finish. That should be a great boost to the track gang as well. Well done Nicole.
All we need now if for Adrian Chiles to come along and congratulate her on not falling off. ;D

I've been a fan of Nicole's since she won all three titles in one year, for too long she has been overlooked by the press, having now won the first gold medal of the games for UK she bloody well better get some :thumbsup: ;D

There was a left bend with lots of paint just before the toll booths where Sharon Laws came off earlier. She may have had a moment there. The coverage was showing the main bunch coming under the 1k flag at the time.
Keeping a low profile all season so that someone else (Vos) was the marked favourite probably helped. There didn't seem to be much reaction when she joined the Austrian to bridge across to GuderiniGuderzo's attack, just after the top of the main climb. The Germans chasing in the last 6km or so weren't making much impression either, after chasing down Emma Pooley on the way up the main climb. The benefits of having a team a strong as everyone else's :thumbsup:

Longo did incredibly well considering she's 10 years older than me...and I'm Jurassic compared to most racing cyclists.

She nearly went into a stone wall near the end of the Commonwealth Games RR.
I was thinking more of losing the right line on the corner after getting on the paint. She didn't lose enough time to have actually come off.

I was in the cafe eating my cooked breakfast and we all got to watch the last 6km on the wide screen TV.
It was very exciting.
I did get concerned when she dropped off the back at the end but I wonder if it was not just the paint but also a tactic to make them think she was not in the sprint for the end, enabling her to wind up and come through?
Top TV. Top ride. Great for the sport.

We watched some on the small screen then moved to the 9' screen.
At times we were dodging the spray. I said to the kids after the last bend "Oh, that's it, 4th".

As mentioned elsewhere, I don't really get this spoiler thing. If you really don't want to know who won, step away from the computer. Put the keyboard down!
It's a forum of cycling enthusiasts. They are likely to get enthused by an amazing performance. Possibly even post about it!
How long should we be careful about mentioning she who shall not be named? Is next week OK? ;D

Because people come here for more than just the one thread. You're asking them to stay away from the forum for the entire two weeks of the Olympics so other people who are lucky enough to have already seen the result, can avoid having to be trivially considerate.

I see the result probably isn't that important with the beeb. Their RSS feed today had "Phelps wins first Gold" as the highest placed Olympics story. Now the most important sports story is "Man U 0 : Portsmouth 0".
No mention of Team GB's first Gold at all.

Respect to Cooke:
It was the first ever medal from a British female cyclist, the first gold from a Welsh athlete since 1972, and Great Britain's 200th gold medal in Olympic history.
And to Emma Pooley and Sharon Laws, who worked well as Cooke's domestiques, and finished 23rd and 35th respectively.

Back in 2002, the CCA's initial proposal was to hold the road race along Beijing's uninspiring fourth ring highway. This huge, eight-lane motorway encircles the city – and is completely flat. Worse still, it's utterly uneventful.
Insiders claim the presentation of the circuit to the International Cycling Union (UCI) consisted of little more than a photocopied map with a yellow marker tracing the loop.

The top story on BBC News Sport page right now is "Cooke grabs first GB gold medal" with the large iPlayer window showing the finish of the race. I don't see how they could have given it more prominence tbh. :)

Something that struck me yesterday during the coverage was how fit she looked over previous years. Even her arms look stronger and more toned.

Has no one mentioned those rather nice looking metal road barriers, that had been made to look like bendy logs, that the ladies had to cycle pass? I thought they were aesthetically jolly good.

Fantastic! well deserved and about time after the last olympics & the last couple of worlds. The changes she has made to her racing & all the preperation work has finally paid off.
It made for a great sunday morning ride :thumbsup:

i think she's got a good chance in the time trial. how often have we seen an athlete win their main event, only to carry the form through to another one and win again (kelly holmes springs to mind).
she's in great form, the course is suitable for her, she's a former junior world tt champion and has won the time trial stages in the tour de france. the bookies might not rate her chances, but i do.

I was really pleased to hear this. I was out for a Sunday morning ride and had stopped at the post office in Sixpenny Handley for a drink and was told "our girl did it!" by a passer-by -- made my ride.
