Audax Highlights Video
« on: 24 October, 2012, 08:41:25 pm »
I've been kicking around a few ideas for a promotional video for  Audax . The first hurdle to get over is why I'd do a ride which sacrifices freedom for sporadic discomfort. I then wanted to show lots of nice scenery from rides to show the attraction, but hint at the nobility of discomfort. I've tried to end with the message that you need others to help you to achieve big stuff.
The video has gone through a couple of iterations, a text exploration of some of the ideas, then an artistic treatment that was a bit Rapha-esque. I've inflicted those on some US correspondents, heaven knows what they made of them. It's due to be up in about 20 minutes, we go out to a pub quiz for 9pm.

Gosh.

that's an interesting departure from your regular stuff, the more sombre/poetic narration makes a big difference.

Very good.

Enjoyed that, Damon.  I'm unlikely to do the LEL or the PBP but I've been over Yad Moss twice this year and I recognised quite a few faces.  This is my fourth season and I stumbled into it via a list in the back of the CTC mag.  A video like that would certainly have got me interested.  Well done!

Think I got most of the musical references, too!

More dad-rock than usual - and lacking in disco/soul emphasis, if I'm not mistaken.

And all the better for it, Matt!  Just out of interest, what do you think of as soul?  I think Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Joe Tex, Lou Rawls, Aretha and Etta James - people like that.  I call it "suit-soul" from there on, Luther Vandross, Teddy Pendergrass and so on.  How about you?

that would be an ecumenical matter. I leave such things to ESL.

It's more complicated than that in my opinion. There's a strand of black dance music that stretches back to the big band era. James Brown is a prime example, making music that contined to use strings and horns beyond the time that a group such as Booker T and the MGs could fill a hall with sound. Craig Charles was filling in last night on Radio 2, and he played a superb Georgie Fame cover of 'Papa's got a brand new bag' with a big band feel. It would make a good Carradice advert.

The consummate creators of that music in the late 70s and early 80s were Chic. In 1979 Danny Baker rightly predicted that Chic would be remembered when Punk was consigned to oblivion http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2012/jul/24/chic-bernard-edwards-interview?CMP=twt_gu

The Olympics reawakened an interest in orchestration on a large scale in all senses. If we look at some of the musical events, we saw the spirit of Isaac Hayes or Barry White in them. A fine example of that was in Elbow's performance. The best iteration of that is in this video, which is just about perfect.

I might do a big band style of video in homage to the April in Paris scene in Blazing Saddles.

Matt C has an aversion to 'Let's go round again' by the Average White Band. I was actually asked by a German rider on the line at PBP to reinstate the 2007 PBP video with that track as the backgound. It has the big band, suit soul, elements I like, it serves the right demographic and the words fit.
The spoken word videos work for an English-speaking audience, and I get some good feedback from them, I've tried with this video to use extremely direct language, mirroring route sheet instructions, to get to a more international audience with that type of video. The Co Op at Alston does shut at 10pm, Sundays included.
Mainly it's a technical exercise for me, the source videos have to be expanded to MPEG2 from AVCHD for ease of editing. That results in images being spread over three computers and eight external drives with a combined capacity of over 5 terrabytes. PBP 2011 has footage from 6 cameras. It's useful for me to trawl through the material every now and again to ensure I have some idea where it all is. In doing that I can concentrate a lot of the exceptional footage on the secondary drive of the main PC.
One of the aims in using music has been to plug into the sort of thing that is likely to be on the Radio 2 playlist, so that the core demographic is reminded of Audax by the tunes. ' Part of the Union' by The Strawbs will be popular over the next 3 months, I just feel that. Partly because the 30 year rule on documents from that period comes in.
I'll probably use some Average White Band again, Hamish Stuart's falsetto voice is superb, and was much appreciated when AWB became the first white group to play on Soul Train.

Sorry for taking this OT so quickly ESL (and Jaded Paul! - edit), but I suppose I was using a more restricted idea of soul music.  I don't think of all black music as "soul" but I am white!.  James Brown moved from soul to funk; Chic were a funk band.  I also heard Georgie Fame on the Craig Charles show last night.  I'm a great fan of Leigh's own Georgie Fame but apart from a pretty-much note for note copy of vthe orchestration, I didn't think his cover of "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag" was as good as JB's.

Still love the video!

Please point this rider out sometime - I will happily shoot him/her.

And can I point out that I never hear it on Radio2? Will this persuade you?!?

[I rather like other AWB stuff.]

Steve Wright regularly uses it because the album version has an extended coda which serves as a bed. He sometimes starts the show with it.

I'd agree with Peter that soul is more Otis Redding. He was backed by Booker T and the MGs. That informed the Doors, which is why I referenced, 'Break on Through' on the video, that and the lyrics.

I did a shorter version of the film first. It features the Tenebrae Motets of Edmund Rubbra, a High Anglican composer who converted to Catholicism. Reaction to that was muted from some of my US correspondents, but I got a positive comment from Portugal, it might be more in tune with Catholic sensibilities.

In between searching for video clips I've been fielding enquiries about a Messiah workshop run by Italian conductor, Marco Fanti. The joys of Heather being the secretary of a choral society.
If I'd had a recording I'd have used Patterson's, I Look from Afar.
