Died, 69 years old . .  I read the other day he was lined up to front a sort of "BBC Gold" channel with 50/60/70s music

Get the Geese off . End of an era of brilliant entertainment from the radio. RIP Steve .

Half a century ago (or slightly more) I used to listen to Radio Luxembourg whilst on night shift at a self-service (a novelty then) garage.  But it seems that was long before Wright joined them.  My tolerance of DJ-type music programmes is virtually zero now.

I'm tempted to go to his funeral and talk over the end of all the music to make it more like his radio shows

Isn't that a deliberate thing to stop you recording it for free?

I confess to having been a fan in the early 80s - I was in my early-twenties.
Stuff has moved on since then.
I've not heard his output of late.
69 seems young.

That is a shock.  Early in my career, driving back from client meetings, his show kept me sane on the M3 or M4 traffic.  (I guess I was never that keen on the Radio 1 playlist - and there just weren't so many radio channels then).

Don't listen to a lot of radio. I remember him mostly from TotP. (https://youtu.be/Qws2TgqhIjE?si=4Jk4zhA7q9YWOGRw)

Never heard of him. Obviously got out of UK too soon.  In that respect.

Sad, very young and appears to be unexpected given the plans being made.
Hated the "speak your branes" show though.

My wife says the beeb have been repeating stuff a lot lately, so once his death is no longer news, perhaps they'll quietly reintroduce him to the afternoon (going by the thread title; I have no idea what he was up to these days).

Same here (though I do like Radcliffe & Maconie on 6music). But like it or not, I have to admit he was very good at what he did. I mean, he pretty much defined the afternoon DJ format. Maybe we can blame him for inspiring all the pale imitation wannabes.
