Plan for PBP 2011 qualifying rides
« on: 01 August, 2010, 08:51:12 am »
Minimal SR next year, and I'll be looking for rides that will minimise my time away from home. Much as I loved the Bryan Chapman it means going straight from work on a Friday night and not getting home until Monday (possibly even after work).

So, with these provisional dates (from the AUK website) and remembering that they're guidelines (so the BCM on the 14th May doesn't mean it can't be used as a qualifying 600):-

    * A 200 by April 22
    * A 300 from April 7 to May 20
    * A 400 from April 28 to June 3
    * A 600 from May 17 to June 17

200: Dunno, maybe an early Henham/Ugley ride
300: The Dean? Stay Friday night and then either finish early enough to get the train or just cycle home.
400: Severn Across or mattc's Oxon to Knighton?
600: Beast from the East? Is it running in 2011? Only a 90 minute ride to the start for me.

I can't be too precise at the moment since most continental calenders are still in the planning stage. So my rough plans:

february a 200 (if available)
march 2x200 (of one will be testriding my own event)
april   2x 300 (again one reccing my own event)
may 400 and 600 (mainly reccing of my own events
june another 600
june or july a 1000.

That's pretty much the schedule which I used to prepare my 2003 PBP where I had no problems at all.

Word is the Beast will be running, in which case look out for the 3Down 300km (Chalfont St Peter down to the New Forest) to complete the Willesden SR Series.

Yes. I have it on good authority that it'll be on 28/29 May. I will definitely be there. I have unfinished business with this ride.

Haven't made any firm plans for other rides but the Severn Across is tempting, and I quite fancy another crack at the Dean. Although they are quite similar, so I might not do both. I'll probably do the Invicta 400 again, possibly the 600 too. Could do any one of a number of 200s... guess I'll pick and choose depending on which are BRM.

Regardless of whether or not I do PBP, I'm hoping to do a double SR at the very least next year.

200: local, ie Mad March from Exeter
300: Elenith.  Yeah I have to stay over in Kidderminister but it's a great ride
400: do my own "Avalon Sunrise".  This is quite easy and starts from near Taunton
600: Bryan Chapman 600.  Easier than the k&sw, almost local

If it's that weekend (the same as the K&SW) then I'll almost certainly do the K&SW.

I'm usually down in Cornwall for the week after that (Mrs G's parents live down there) and my parents live near Crewkerne (so getting to Exeter is relatively easy). Plus it'll be a nice way to spend a birthday.

Pi55-easy 400/600 (probably our own shoestring events, starting close to home :) ) Other  events will be ridden purely for fun, as and when circs allow.

300s are easier to find - will probably ride the Dean, and hopefully some new events if I can arrange travel, as and when circs allow.[might repeat HeartOfEngland]

Of course I've already got to the head of the pre-qual Q ... <smug>

Hmm. If I can clone myself twice I can do the K&SW, your 400 and the Beast From the East, all in the same weekend. All I need is a 3rd clone to do a 200 for me that weekend and I'll be done.

A question more from the organiser side:

So, with these provisional dates (from the AUK website) and remembering that they're guidelines (so the BCM on the 14th May doesn't mean it can't be used as a qualifying 600):-

    * A 200 by April 22
    * A 300 from April 7 to May 20
    * A 400 from April 28 to June 3
    * A 600 from May 17 to June 17

Can anyone confirm these dates? Or rather, what they will actually be? :)
There are currently 600s in the calendar on the weekends jsut before and jsut after these dates, so I imagine something will change!

According to PBP, the dates are indeed provisional, but are not guidelines.

September is the deadline for registering 2011 BRMs !!!

p.s. if one was picking rides by name:
400  28 May  Poynton, S of Stockport    Llanfairpwllgwyngyll gogerychwyrndrobwll llantysiliogogogoch

If it's BRM it's a qualifier. Check with your regional co-ordinator for cut-offs, but basically the only proviso is that AUK needs enough time to validate the rides so that PBP aspirants can enter before the deadline. If, as an organiser, your record for prompt returns is dodgy, then you may not be allowed a late slot.

Ahhhh, as I am not doing PBP, I can sit back, relax and watch you muppets fret about which rides to do   ;D

PS: Greenback, your 2011 list was essentially my qualifiers for 2007.  They worked quite well.  The terrain for the 300, 400 and 600 you mention is suitable hilly (but not overly hilly) to be good prep for PBP.  Much better (imo) that the Welsh classics, which have a different nature of climbs.  This is in by no way influenced by me wanting to ensure there are spaces on the Bryan Chapman for those hoping to do it for pleasure not business  ;)

Ah, so you will be on fixed for the BCM then, for maximum riding pleasure.

Thanks Ian:
That's a typical bit of AUK vagueness, but it seems a sensible approach!

Dave Hudson's 600 from Midhurst to Hay was my one and only fixed folly at that distance.  Spinning down Welsh mountains in the dark is a memory I cherish but my thighs refuse me permission to relive.

200 Gilpins Reserve
300 Snow Roads
400 Lanchester
600 The Ralph Coates

actually if The Daylight 600 is on I'll do that and if Flying Scot puts on Ower the Edge I'll do that too so I might as well find a Scottish 200 and so a Scottish SR Series. Did Scottish 200, 300 and 400 in 2007, wish I'd done The Daylight too

From my most recent conversation with the Ernsts a couple of weeks ago I got the impression that its almost certain that the Daylight WONT be on in 2011 [or at least not organised by them].

My SR I hope will be

- Muckle Trauchle on 3rd January (it has to be done)
- Mull it Over 300
- Edinburgh / Preston / Edinburgh 600's
- Gala 400

Will probably aim to do another 600 as well, maybe its time I finally bit the bullet and rode the Bryan Chapman.

A supreme 400 that.  If it's on, I'll be in attendance.  It's bit of a hassle getting to Beattock from Surrey, but some things are worth the bother.

<ride list>

We'll likely see you a couple times next year!
Currently planning to get the qualifiers bagged as early as possible, so:

200: local, ie Kennet Valley run
300: Elenith.  Must-do as missed it this year due to Volcano, but depending on date may go for Heart of England 300 instead.
400: BC 400
600: Bryan Chapman 600.  k&sw, as 'backup'.

So it looks like we could be in Wales a fair bit again next year. (Still got 2 more trips planned for this year, and there's a small mc1k score to settle sometime too......)

If John runs it as a permanent, I'll be doing it around the time of the Summer Solstice.  Based in 'wyrd Wells (I've given up trying to spell that place).  Will be looking for other "glorious DNF'tards"

I've made my mind up, Im planning on doing The Three Coasts as an additional 600 next year as PBP prep.

BCM has been a goal for a while but will have to wait as it clashes with the Snow Roads in 2011.  3 Coasts on 18th June fits in nicely with Edin - Preston - Edin late May and maybes the 24 late July.

I missed the Snow Roads to do the Cambrian this year and dont want to miss this flagship event two years running.

Next year I won't be able to slink into work at 10 am on Monday after having ridden 600 km over the weekend. Nor will I be able to take leave, which means my BRM 600 will have to be over the Whitsun Bank Holiday weekend - so K&SW or the shoestring Edinburgh - Preston - Edinburgh for me.

As for the other rides, I dunno. Possible the Brevet Cymru 'cos I enjoyed doing it this year and I may do some of the Alfreton rides to save travelling too far. Also depends what comes of the Easter bootcamp in Llanwrtyd.
What on earth am I doing here on this beautiful day?! This is the only life I've got!!
