My electric assistance is broken
« on: 29 August, 2018, 07:55:38 pm »
 :(
I was towing the Iceland shopping home when the pedals stopped engaging and I coasted to a stop. I can move with the throttle but I can't pedal anywhere  .
I am not sure what to do with it now as I have low fund's at present and have the ez3 trike to sort out as well..looks like I will be riding the ez3 trike to  Birchcoombe. It is very useful when it is working so I am hoping to get it repaired when I can  :)

Maybe this ties in with the bash the motor took when the trike rolled? I suspect that a gear has stripped somewhere.

Will make enquiries and come back to you.

Wondering if this is related to the range issues you were having...

Hard to say for sure but I think so too. Based only on a hunch and, although I didn't spot it, Polar Bear (I think) told me the motor casing had taken a whack either in the Long Itch incident or when falling off the 'bridge-that-wasn't-wide-enough'.

Need to be wary of extrapolating from incomplete data . . .

Cycleman reports a significant (>30%) reduction in range on both batteries.  That seems very poor given how new they are and that they haven't had any obvious abuse (he cunningly fell battery-side-up in the bridge incident).  If it were a random duff cell, I'd expect them to perform differently.  Which leads to the question of whether the energy's being wasted somewhere, and if the trike's rolling properly, the motor comes under suspicion.

Obvious diagnostic would be to swap batteries with a known-good system and compare performance, but that's a bit academic if the motor's mechanically b0rked.

IRTA as "rage issues" and thought I'd be a bit peeved too if my means of transport was b0rked.
There are two ways you can get exercise out of a bicycle: you can
"overhaul" it, or you can ride it.  (Jerome K Jerome)

So it's not just the electric assistance, you can't pedal it without the motor? I don't know what it is, but I hope you can get it fixed. (What Tim Hall said, really.)

What kind of system is it? If your pedals are moving but not transmitting power, then the pedal freewheel . If it's a Bafang BBSx that a $10 spare from greenbikekit.com and here's  a YouTube video on how to replace it.

I'm not sure if it's the same thing but if it is you don't need to remove the motor to access that clutch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYs-jgnOC8k
