Nicholas announced that he didn't want to watch Alice, 'because it's a silly film'.

Then sat rooted and rapt for the duration of the whole film.

Whatever Tim Burton used to ensnare 7 year olds' brains can I get a tankerload? That'll be to go!

Well that's the more blunt way of putting it but as usual he's dead right.

The visuals are amazing on Alice, especially in stereo as Burton plays around with it a lot more.

I also watched "White House Down". While it doesn't have crappy Bulgarian VFX (See "Olympus has Fallen"), it's still an Emmerich film and is quite poor, even for what it is.
In that sense "Olympus" is a better action movie.

Last night we watched Tim Burton's Big Fish.
Tonight we're watching Troll hunter. It's like the Blair Witch Project, in Norwegian, with trolls. And it's silly.
Do not clench. It only makes it worse.

Diamonds Are Forever, one of the worst Bond films and only relieved by Mr. Wint and Mr. Kidd's campness.  Sean Connery looks very old (he was only 41, possibly 40 during actual filming).
Hard work sometimes pays off in the end, but laziness ALWAYS pays off NOW.

Untouchable.  A French film about the relationship between a carer from a Parisian sink estate and a wealthy paraplegic.  It was a hugely succesful film over La Manche, but I found it so trope heavy that I lost interest after 20 minutes and started being distracted by other things.  It  did have some amusing scenes and was well shot and acted.  I suspect it is one you need to be in the mood to watch (it is the usual life affirming, warming stuff with a heart of larkness).

Just watched Trollhunter. It was very silly

It's very hard to stop yourself from shouting "Troll!" in a fake Norwegian accent for several days or even weeks after having seen that film.

Arachnoquake.

I've watched an awful lot of shit disaster movies over the years, but this one's in the top 5.

It spectacularly failed to deliver on the 'quake' aspect.

Skyfall.

Load of tosh. But mostly enjoyable tosh none the less. The only bit that really turned my stomach was Dame Judi's poetry.

Rust and Bone.

Rather implausible, but moving. Terribly under-stated.

I didn't understand that film at all.  We left the cinema completely baffled.

47 Ronin. Another Crouching Tiger style film, and none the worse for that. Keanu Reeves looking a bit scruffy does sword fighting. Surprisingly enjoyable.

The Desolation of Smaug

SMORG or SMOWG?

7/10. It was okay, better than the first part but it lacks something. It's also being really drawn out to produce three films.

There's lots that shouldn't be there too, you'll know of you've ever read the book.

Nope, still don't get it.  Must be French then eh?

If you want to watch a film with a whale in it, I recommend 'Mental' with Toni Colette.  Think Muriel's Wedding without the political correctness.

It got a rotten tomatoes pasting, but my family was mental too, and it's refreshing to be able to laugh about that stuff, and I thought this film was hilarious.

And I love Toni Colette, she's played some of my favourite film roles, and always seems like a real woman, not a Hollywood Star.

LOTR was 3 large volumes condensed into 3 long films.  Personally I think it was a triumph of editing, distilling the essential bits.

The Hobbit is a fairly short book excruciatingly stretched into 3 long films.  It's 2 films at most but surely would have made a cracker of a 3 hour film.  It could have been an all-time classic but I doubt anyone really wants to see 30 minutes of Dwarves washing the dishes again (or ever).

Ta, I'll look it up, I love Toni Colette too, I want to be her best friend, she's wonderful in The Way Way Back I mentioned upthread, with the great Sam Rockwell.

Howl's Moving Castle (Studio Ghibli).
It was pretty good for that sort of thing.
