[HAMR] What does the mamil avoiding the Clapham Omnibus think?

I think TG's biggest achievement to date is make Tarzan's effort look less than superhuman.

If you look at Strava, TG has 10k more followers, and 10 times more kudos. He's certainly got the mamils behind him.

What is the relative take up of Strav in UK vs US?

Whilst I don't disagree with you I'm mightily heartened by the response to Steve's attempt.

Is it "the cycling world" or is it a small but vocal minority on largely UK social media?

AFAICT Steve's attempt is probably closer to how Tommy G actually did it, but OTOH it seems to me that he was riding within the limits of the rules and the technology available to him so in that sense it's arguable that Kurt's attempt may be closer to how a modern-day Tommy would have tried for it. (If he was in Florida and had a campervan and a recumbent, natch.)

I guess you mean this sort of thing:

I do wish he wouldn't.  There is something unseemly about relying on a recumbent.  Within the rules, but the spirit is sometimes more important than the letter.

At the end of the day year it will be the miles that count not the strava kudos.

Sorry, my post above was actually an innocent question.
It wasn't, as it appears now I've re read it, some sort of dig.

I read it as an innocent question Basil - I had to google it - I ask merely for information - is what I got. ('International association of micro-finance investors' didn't seem to fit).

(the point of this somewhat niche acronym is that sooo many posts on the internet are barbed rhetorical questions. Almost any genuine question can be interpreted as barbed or rhetorical by a sufficiently cycnical reader. Which is a shame. )

I read it as an innocent question too, but didn't bother googling, confident that in the fullness of time someone who *could* be arsed doing so would post an answer.

<sits back, smug in his own laziness>
<realises with a hint of disappointment he preferred Basil's suggestion to the real answer>
<panics in case this comes across as a criticism of IanG as the messenger>
<backpedals frantically>
<disappears up own fundament in a fug of self-referentiality>

I guess you mean this sort of thing:

I do wish he wouldn't.  There is something unseemly about relying on a recumbent.  Within the rules, but the spirit is sometimes more important than the letter.

The original quote also pointed out that it was the thing that was holding me back from singing his praises from the rafters.  That is, everything else he does is pretty much awesome.  So, no, not that kind of thing.

I will be a bit more specific about what is disappointing.  That a swathe of more dedicated cyclists appear so dismissive about what Kurt is doing day in and day out.  I get that Steve is currently having the harder time of it and deserves encouragement.  But you'd think Kurt was putting in effort closer to IronOx than Steve by the apathy he is experiencing.

I think the difference in reaction reflects the countries and the cycling culture. The UK has a bit of a cult thing going with cycling and mentally we feel like putting those dam uppity colonials in their place. Also the Americans will just think their man is going to win and that will be that. No fuss just a simple show of obvious superiority. Why get all bothered about it?

Name names! Let's get these nasty, vicious types shamed!

Or, perhaps, let's get on with our lives, maybe just supporting the one we know and quietly admiring the efforts of both.

Apathy? Is the demand that every cyclist is lined up, North Korean style, waving a Steve cowbell in one hand, a Kurt one in the other and waggling a third cowbell from between their buttocks for IronOx?
It is simpler than it looks.

The solution is for you to stop being so dismissive about Kurt then
