Ballet Season ticket - how times have changed
« on: 09 April, 2008, 07:29:48 pm »
10 years ago I had a season ticket to Liverpool FC, I never imagined life would change too much.

In 2008 I live in Paris and I have a season ticket to the Ballet at the Paris Opéra house.

Am I the only one who just doesn't 'get' ballet?

Ballet is an extraordinary art form.

Some people get it, others don't.

You have to see it done properly though.
It is simpler than it looks.

A more inventive man than I could set these to the tune of "A few of my favourite things" from The Sound of Music :).
I don't mind the above but I'd rather go to a Nick Cave concert.

Gilets

The greatest item ever invented! How can you dislike them?

Yes but how many ballets have you been to? Think about it, great music, great movement, interpretation, a true spectacle. It doesn't get much better than that.

I've been to two: Romeo and Juilet and Coppelia.  I enjoyed them both but they didn't affect me in the same way that seeing Arcade Fire for the first time did!
Maybe I'm a philistine.  :)

Its a shame most people's contribution to a thread about ballet is how much they don't like it to varying degrees. I shouldn't have asked.

I'll see if i can get Mrs Nutty to sign up here, she's got a HUGE love of ballet and would chat positively about it.

David, You are not alone.

Being married to an ex professional Ballet Dancer this is a problem for me...

You know, I think I am in love with Mrs Nutty too now.  There is nothing more beautiful than the elegance that having danced ballet, for so long and so well, produces!

Opera and Country and Western are two genre's where there are songs that I couldnt live without and other stuff that is so awful it's unbelievable.
For example

Purcell - Dido and Aeneas

Heartbreaking, stunningly beautiful. I have the Janet Baker version and it's one of my most played CDs.

Verdi - Rigoletto

Yuck, trilling for the sake of it. In fact you can chuck most Italian Bel canto in the same bin.

Emmylou Harris - Boulder to Birmingham

A paen to lost love. You can feel the despair in her voice. Makes my want to cry.

All the Hat acts like Garth Brooks and the equivalent female versions.

I think you have to be American and have had an irony bypass not to want to vomit listening to most of these.

I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Seconded (thirded?). Dunno about the gilets, as I've never tried one. Can't really see the point in protecting your body from the weather and not your arms. I'd imagine that no sleeves and a headwind would make for a flappy bike ride, though?

Actually, typing that lot I think I've convinced myself that I don't like gilets?!

I have only been to one Ballet; Swan Lake at Covent Garden. I was doubtful beforehand but thoroughly enjoyed the spectacle. I read the plot beforehand, if I had not done that I think my enjoyment would of been less, as I would not known what was going on.

The two most enjoyable elements were the music and the athleticism. It was a bit like watching a good football game; athleticism and co-ordination on an amazing level. Definitely a convert.

I'm sure there are many posts on a ballet forum somewhere saying "Cycling - I just don't get it".

Neither set of posts will get either forum anywhere!
It is simpler than it looks.

Well I feel restored in my faith of YACF, now that we have had some positive comments about Ballet. Especially you Nutty.

Had a chat with Mrs Nutty last night.  She might join up here to chat ballet.

Oh, and if you're in France she'll probably want to have the whole discussion in French.  (So no flirting with her behind my back...   I know about Babelfish ;))
