Yeah, Cavendish getting a 1st, 3rd, 4th and 8th in Giro 2023 sprint stages was purely by some connivence of the rest of the peleton. Points are given for the first 15th finishers on a stage because you don't end up in the first 15 at the finish by accident. So for a former sprinter with no specialist lead-out train to do that, the only conclusion must be some form of put up job. How could anyone other than utter dupes believe that ability to actually sprint might come into it.

A number of top sprinters are already out of the race. A number of topsprinters weren't well placed, made tactical errors. THe points didn't matter anymore as the points classification was already decided. So those who couldn't win had no incentive to continue sprinting to the line.
Add to that the near absence of team lead out trains, it came down to luck and the ability to read a sprint. And an older sprinter is nearly always the better tactician.

....mmmh, some people clearly don't understand sarcasm, or the 11k Euro in prize money and 180 UCI points for winning a stage.

Oh, I think they understand it all right - which is why they might object to being called utter dupes!

Anyway, he still won.

! I was calling myself one of the "utter dupes" for being in the collective who think Cavendish won on ability on the day rather than gift/we can't be bothered to race conspiracy by the peleton - yes.

OK - my head hurts!  Do you think he'll get to ride the Tour?  I suppose it's odds-on.  By the way, I saw a very scathing you tube video by Chris Horner on Cavendish but I don't know if he's done one after yesterday's victory.

Chris Horner commentary (eta) on the final stage

So, apart from G 'helping a brother out', there's no actual evidence that other key sprinters gifted anything /  let Mark Cavendish win...   :)

I mentioned the video a few days ago. Go to 14:07 for his view on Cavendish (during the Giro).

It not the one you linked to previously - it's the one from the last stage.
