I might get the train out, given that I'm working, but the weather is looking decidedly iffy.

Yes - wow & nutty do please come along!  I'll obviously do what I can to keep OD's "evil plans"  :demon: in check, but the more the merrier :)  It'd also be great to see del again too, unless he's too busy breaking home appliances.

A reprise of a photo from our last visit is in order, to wet appetites:-

Oh, it's that pub. It was indeed very nice. Looks like they did good food too (I had some choccie fudge cake dessert). Sorry I can't make it along tomorrow.

I have arranged to have my evening meal at 5.15 p.m., catch the 7.48 train to Wickford (8.05) and then cycle to Stow Maries (about 8 miles). I will then ride home. Well, after enough time in the pub not to make it look as though I'm being churlish (about closing time should do).

I should arrive before 9 p.m.

If it's pissing down there may well be a change of plan.

My evil plan isn't evil at all so fear not.

If you look at the regular attendees it is clear we have people from distinct geographical areas with vast amounts of local knowledge we could tap into.  For me, the joy of these rides has been going to areas (albeit in the dark) and pubs I've not been to before.

So, interspersed amongst the regular rides we could have nights where someone hosts a ride and picks a route that shows off their area to best effect.  Some of us could buddy up, for example bob and TOKaMaK could do the Chelmsford area and the Southend crew could club together.  Personally I don't think it's a problem if some of us have to use trains and cars to get to the start of a hosted ride.

What do we think?

if anyone fancies a mountaineering trip to the summit of Essex, I'm very happy to host / guide a ride!

from wikipedia:
The highest point of the county of Essex is Chrishall Common near the village of Langley, close to the Hertfordshire border, which reaches 482 feet (147 m)

it's quite a trek from Southend.

edit:
it's on peakbagger!  Chrishall Common - Peakbagger.com

Possible re-think about tonight

Given numbers seem to be dropping and Oaky possibly can't start till 7ish and I don't want a late night and Wow is using a train, can we go back to the Square and Compasses as the venue tonight???

Wow, could you get the train to Witham or Hatty Pev???

I don't mind sticking to the Prince of Wales but The S&C might work better for us all.

Yep -- I'd be up for that.  I've been up there before, on the Windmill Ride Audax (With around 90 miles in the legs by that point).  There's  a very nice windmill around there, which was especially welcoming on that day in the heat and after the climb since bananas and water were on offer.

As it turns out,  I can start earlier again (e.g. 6:30 as usual).  I'm happy to go with the flow regarding venue.

I think its just you, me and the Southend crew so will depend on whether they are willing to journey to Fuller Street.  Let's see what develops during the day.

I'm not going all the way to Fuller Street. I wouldn't get to Witham much before 9.

In a couple of weeks I'll not be teaching. It will  make life lots easier - assuming you're going out on 16th?

Sooooooooooooo, what do we want to do?  PoW or S&C?

Given this was supposed to be a planning session would people be comfortable with me and Oaky being a couple of benign dictators enthroned in the S&C or would a wider audience like to be involved at the PoW?

Since I'm not a regular attendee I'm happy with Benign Dictators. (Do dictators come in pairs?  ::-)) You sort yourselves out and I'll attend as and when I can.

P.S. mike, make it a summer evening.

Benign dictators are OK by me in this context. Since I am never likely to be a regular attender to these mid-week sessions I'll just fit in when I can.

Groovy.

Looks like a convening of the Benign Dictatorship Grand Council at the Square & Compasses tonight.  The Benign Dictators being myself and Oaky.  However, should anyone else be in the area feel free to drop by.

Oaky, wanna swing by my garage door?  If so, what time?

6:30 would be better as I don't need a late night.  Got to be in Warwick first thing tomorrow morning - deep and abounding joy!

I'm about to leave work, and will be going through Great Leighs on my way home - would be too early for ducking off to Fuller Street to meet you guys, but I'm too knackered to be out any later! Have fun.
