Almost Dutch. From the Greens of Cambridge across Fenland, a vast watery landscape of rivers, peat beds and marshes. A short stretch of bridleway, followed by the only climb to The Ship of The Fens, Ely Cathedral at all of 26 metres above sea level. Onwards along canal banks with sodium-lit crop picking to our halfway stop at Welney Wetland Centre. Final leg through a village named for us to the Cathedral of Marshland at Terrington St Clement and then West Lynn for a ferry (£1.20) to our destination. For a feel of where we're going, settle down to this video: http://meadesshrine.blogspot.com/1997/01/efa.html#ep5
Meet in front of Cambridge station by 23.30 for midnight start. Cheapest trains from London are from Liverpool Street, alternatively faster but more expensive from King's Cross. Cycles are allowed on both routes, no reservation required. King's Lynn trains return direct to King's Cross. A ride of 110km, with just 340m climbing. And no shelter if there's a headwind.

what time are you expecting to be in Ely, or even pass through Little Downham?
-

Probably between 2 & 2.30 a.m.
But we don't let riders join part way. There are others coming to the start from Ely, and riding back there after breakfast.
-
I don't think there's a rule against cheering the ride on or distributing CAKE, thobut.
-
I think I've only ever been out this way once, but I think this ride has epic potential.
-
It sounds to me like a Very Good Idea. The trouble is I will probably be Oop Noorth in hilly regions when it is happening.
-
I'd like to do this one but have somehow found myself having to endure the second part of Harry Potter and the Ridiculously Convoluted Plot in London that evening so won't be able to get to the start on time, even by train :'(
-

I joined you on a Cambridge to Kings Lynn ride - one that Regulator organised.

I was wondering whether or not it was Greg's ride - memory fails me.
Chris Smith and Lynsey on it as well?
-
That was my first forum ride.

I think Chris & Mrs were on their Tandem, but I belive they packed before Lynn. Lynsay, Kim, Greg, Teethgrinder & myself camped outside Lynn, and return rode, into a headwind to Ely the following day.

camped outside Lynn.
This was my plan but sadly I have an un-get-out-able commitment on the Sunday so have to postpone it until next year

The reason I'm asking is that I'm in London that day taking my disabled son to the Nat Hit Museum, and no idea when I'll be back. Your route, if taking NCN 11 through Ely to Downham market passes less than 500m from my doorstep. I know I can get that far in time, but not sure about Cambridge.

I've sent you an email

??? Aren't they public roads...

I'm in.
Just bought train tickets; not too expensive though still not cheap and I'll spend a lot of time travelling but I think it'll be worth it.
I'm going to have a lot of time to kill in KL before my 13.44 train home.
-
Unfortunately, I can't make it. Although Cambridge to King's Lynn is a favourite ride (some of you may have done one of my King's Lynn rides in the past).
Have fun everyone!
-
Signed up.
Should be riding back to Ely from King's Lynn to make 162km. Bit of a wiggle en route to make up the distance. Different route back.
Looking forward to it.

May need to drive 1000 miles to Scotland and back either next weekend or the FNRTTC weekend. If I'm free on 30th, I'm hoping to sign on as another Ely Rider.
It's starting to look as if we have enough Ely riders to organise an event of our own... :D

I did wonder! There are a few locals who can't make this date but we're interested.

I've finally got around to filling in the registration form.
Work has had me away from home for a few days (ironically enough in Kings Lynn; yes, I did take a bike). I forgot to register before the trip and I didn't have my CUK info with me.
I'll be back in KL again Tue-Thu next week. Not really where I want to be but needs must, sigh. Originally I'd planned to be elsewhere......
Even if I hadn't already bought the train tickets I wouldn't have stayed over 'til Friday (work would have paid for the hotel) because it would have meant driving home after the ride and that is A BAD THING.
-
Registered - Hope I'm not too late!
-
The South Westerly breeze we have had all day, here in Ely (about 1/3 way) has dropped.
Fairly clear skys, but no moon (new phase), so you're going to find out just how inky-black the Fens can be at night. :demon:
Hope to see some of you at Cambridge station later...

Just about to set off for Ely- currently wearing white linen shirt & Jasper Conran cord jeans as I'm going to see a band at an Ely pub 'til the train is due. ;D

Just as well I'm not on this ride. I could never hope to reach this level of sartorial elegance. I'm a more "Sports Direct cycling shirt and cheap shorts" kinda guy.

The coolest lookin'n dude on the ride ;)
ETA - FNRttC ought to have a competition for that accolade...
ETFA - Dave Falconer not allowed to participate ;)

Major disappointment for me: late train in to Leeds meant I missed the Stevenage train (change there for Cambridge). The guard said stay on 'til York and get a train from there. It was also running late and there was no guarantee that there would be a Cambridge train or if there had been I'd have arrived very late.
There were epic efforts from the other ride leaders and some CCers to send me the route but it would have been hard to catch up and there was still the risk I'd get stuck in Stevenage.
I'm nearly home now. There is beer in the fridge.

Sounds like a superb night

Compared to what I'd got planned, it's not.

I changed into a YACF shirt and cycling shorts for actual ride :smug: :smug:

Booh hiss - It's time that elegance returned to the clothes worn when cycling, especially at night. Were you on a recumbent?
-
I wasn't on a recumbent, but Kim rode on her Red Baron, and we had a ICE trike.
I have previous for dapper outfits for cycling, but tend not to at night...

I didn't take photos on the ride, apart from queuing for the ferry to cross the tidal Great Ouse, at King's Lynn (also posted in the 'ferry pictures' thread).

Three YACF crew from that ride were also on last night's ride! :D :D :D :D :D
Great to see FBOAB & Kim again, :-*
Good to meet NickB and MsG - Thanks for leading & 'All-upping' the ride.
-
Great ride and pleasing to be on both home territory and venturing into new areas west of Lynn.
Interesting perspective from the All Upper end of the ride, and big thanks to everyone who chatted along the way ^_^.
Ferry ride was brilliant.
Four of us did the ride back to Ely with the predicted headwinds for the Fenland fun, lovely sunshine on the river.
Good to meet Wobbly John and Kim.
Thanks to NickB and Rob for guidance :-)
Funny bits:
Attempting to All Up a hi-viz wearing scarecrow on the outskirts of Little Downham. :shy:
Later on in a village further north of the cafe (in daylight) spotting another hiz-viz humanoid, declaring I wasn't going to get caught out All Upping a dummy again - which then moved!! Poor chap was waiting for a bus :laugh:
Flinging a chair about in an attempt to give Leigh a hug at Welney.
Thinking the Friday Bridge village sign was a tribute to horror movies (Friday 13th etc) with a chainsaw wielding madman on it - kind folks pointed out it was a fisherman!
