Hailsham 300 - April 17th 2010

Anyone doing this?  It will be my first 300 and am slightly daunted by the 3am start!

I'm doing this one.

Its a great ride, covers some lovely countryside.  The 3am start sounds a bit daunting, but it works OK in practice.   Its good riding as the sun comes up, and you are at Dave's first stop pretty soon, then Tesco's in Winchester for a late breakfast.

Should get back in daylight or not too long after.

Sounds good.  I've based my .gpx route on this Bikely route (much easier than trying to translate a routesheet) - does it look about right for this year? http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/V30009

It was all a bit of a blur last year but the section all the way along the A272 does seem  to work well and it is generally a fast run to Winchester.

The rolling return was pretty good too passing through some fine downlands countryside.

1) How long does a '300' take to complete?

2) Is it 'fun'?

3) Why do it?
Certainly never seen cycling south of Sussex

Hello my darling.

No, not this year I'm afraid but I will be doing Dave's 600.

Will your soup be on offer as it was in 2007?

Much though I enjoyed last year's I think 300 is a big ask in my state; is the Didling control in the same place? may well be riding Dave's PRP perm so will make a detour assuming he's still there.

I'm in for the "Well-Fed 100" on same day, same organiser, and shares the control at "Didling"

It would be good to see you and watch you tun your nose up at the oversupply of Creamed rice pudding that always happens on an El Supremo

I did like the early start as it means you finish at a sensible time!

I'm in the process of translating the route-sheet to .gpx and am wondering what the row of teapots next to controls 1 & 3 mean (marked "el Supremo").  Anyone know?  I haven't done any of his events before and there's no email address for Dave on the AUK entry page.

Tea, stollen and a vast array of sandwiches, etc.

(I think it's a key for where Dave 'El Supremo' Hudson's will be sitting with his legendary mobile catering control.)

(Note that, to my shame, I'm yet to do an El Supremo ride.)

Looking forward to this now.

I'm out.  Still coughing up as soon as I start doing anything vaguely resembling exercise.

Have a great time.  Looks like you'll have the weather for it.

Yes, apart from a nippy start the wind (what there is of it) should be with us both ways, according to various weather forecasts, and plenty of sun.  The only problem is deciding what clothing to bring!

when I started this last year I was stopped about 50m from the start by a police car; seems they are always getting asked where Dave's events start from by cyclists riding and driving forlornly around Hailsham looking for the car park at unearthly o clock and they didn't know.

anybody thinking of just putting two waypoints on their GPS for the very long A272 leg, just ignore the stupid thing until you get past Petersfield as it will try and take you all over the place.

Talking of GPS and controls, does anyone know where the first control is?  The name on the route-sheet isn't found by Google maps.
