I may regret this but I've entered the 300.At least posting on here will give me the incentive to get round.

I like the route - Clay Bank and Newgate Bank after 250 km do hurt a bit, but a quick pint in Helmsley helps.  I felt like a right alky drinking mine, until our club's membership secretary came in as I was guzzling my pint, and ordered a half

Say hello at the start if you see me - but I'm not a morning person, so any resemblance to socialising will be purely coincidental.  The alarm will be set for 02.30 on Saturday.  That just ain't right.

A good ride today.  There were a bunch of us from the university cycling club, including two first timers, so we  had a sociable ride and the rain held off until about 75km.  It was also good to see some more of you and to finally meet LindaG.  We went round at roughly the same pace as Mr Nesbitt, who was setting off for home last time I saw him.

I believe both first timers enjoyed themselves, they should be out again soon
on the floor of a service station in the middle of the night, on a godforsaken 600 in the middle of nowhere.  They don't know what they're letting themselves in for [sniggers].

It was my wife's 1st 100 km ride / Audax. We both enjoyed it although we got really cold from Lower Dunsford.
Nice to see Martin again and to meet Linda and Crusty for the 1st time.  Linda, what was the name of the ride in Richmond next week?

Lucia's Vale of York Meander.  Starts in Tockwith I think.  Maybe.

It was good meeting you too, and Mrs Steve, and some other folks from these parts.  It was a good day out.

Steve there are three rides on from Richmond next week A flat 100, a hilly 100 and a hilly 150. I'm doing the latter as is Deano. I shall be riding home afterwards and from Deanos beforewards.

it was a nice day today, it was nice to spend some time with some people I know and don't very often see. I had a tailwind home and got back around 19:30, 218km in total and according to GPSAltitudeChart 2500m of climbing. Big  to Mrs GT, I am pleased I saw you both in Wigginton as you were finishing

12 hours?!  Oh dear

AndyC helped me get round in 12h50 in 2007

12h 45.  Sorry ;D

I turned to Mike Thompson as we were descending from Newgate Bank into Helmsley, and said that it would be good to finish in less than 12 hours 50, cos that's Mr Nesbitt's quickest ever 300...

I had a good ride.  I was in the lead group at the top of the climb out of Pocklington, but on fixed I simply couldn't keep up with FE Bob and his posse when they hit top gear and roared down from the top of the Wolds, so I hooked up with Mike Thompson (also on fixed) and we rode the rest of the way together, occasionally crossing paths with Andy C, who had some puncture issues and finished a few minutes ahead of us.

At one point, we were about on schedule for a sub-12 hour time, but the grotesque headwind between Richmond and Stokesley put paid to that.  The cafe in Stokesley was excellent - they couldn't have been friendlier, or more accommodating of our eccentricities, being happy to fill our bottles and stamp our cards while we ate.

It was a cracking ride, and it stayed remarkably dry throughout.  There was rain around, but we missed it all.  I chatted with a few of the other finishers at the end, then had a quick pint at the Black Horse before my lift back to Darlo rolled in.

Well I was faster than you last year. BTW did you stop for a pint in Helmsley ?

Nah, we didn't muck about in Helmsley.  A quick half of fizzy pop in t'pub.  I don't think Andy C did either - spotted lurking outside the baker's on the other side of the roundabout.

The hilly 100 actually looks harder than the 150, as it goes up Park Rash :o  The 150 goes up Nidderdale to Lofthouse, which is hardly the soft option, but the last 50 km from Ripon to Richmond is as flat as you like.

All I can say after reading Deanos report is I got round and I wasn't last home. The wind was awful and I felt cold all day.Good points were Stokesley control serving very nice spag bol which sustained me to the end,Bilsdale road without motor bikes and pub in Helmsley. Bad points cold wind ,Clay bank reminding me to shed a bit of weight and awful custard in Cross view tearooms in Richmond.
Feeling good though this a.m.

Linda G and I really enjoyed the ride yesterday.  We managed to start at the same time as everyone else which was a major bonus.

As usual we arrived back shortly before Bob.  Last time this happened he had done double our distance and this time is was triple.  As usual we missed Deano but we did manage to slow Martin down for a while and rode along for a short while with Mr and Mrs SteveGT, who thankfully picked up Linda's Brevet card at the first tea stop and gave it back to us just in time to have it stamped at the second one.

There were quite a lot of women and young people on the 100 yesterday.  So much for me thinking it was mainly old blokes with white beards who do Audax.  Riding in a large bunch was quite an experience, I tried hard to learn all the different arm signals and things to shout out although I was left confused by the car up, car down thing.

It was a nice experience not to be crippled by a massive headwind as on the Monky Business and also it was novel to finish before some people on full size bikes.  Last time only Dave on his folder finished after us.  Although it was raining the ride through Beningborough Hall was a lot more pleasant this time cos last time we got phoned by Gerry at that point to see if we'd abandoned.

A really good route.  Particularly enjoyed the road past Brimham Rocks.  Certainly one of the best rides we've ever done.
The friendly landlord helped us put our bikes into his very big shed.  Very carefully we did not fall into the acid bath which was there.

I was on the 300, which began at 5 - no wonder you missed me.  Mind you, Keith did mention that FE Bob was patiently queueuing at the back of a bunch of finishers on the 100 when he came in at quarter to five :o

I didn't mean to be disparaging - I hope it didn't come across like that.  But I've struck a vein of speed, and I'm quite enjoying pushing myself around these rides.  Also, I was winding up Mr N a wee bit ;)

I've dug out last year's brevet card, and I was exactly three hours quicker this year.  It gets me no more points, and I don't think I enjoyed the ride any more, as both years I was in excellent company.  Newgate Bank was still a bastard.

I did look for someone in a York Cycleworks jersey at the start, but didn't see one.  Hey, I was still coming to terms with the fact that I got out of bed at 2.45 am, so I barely grunted "Hello" at people I knew.  Conversation was beyond me.

I'm flattered that I seem to be setting some sort of standard to beat. I'll have to start trying.

Well, we were discussing that, and since FE Bob reckons riding fixed costs 10%, you should be able to ride a 300 in 11h30.  Nae problem for a rider of your calibre.

I'm certain I could do 300km in 11h30 IF I did it on Fixed, my fastest 200 was on Fixed, get the gear right for the terrain and it'll not slow you down.

Anyway big up to Keith B for hosting these events. Always good events.

If it is any help think "Car UP your backside" and "Car DOWN your throat"

The more you learn about the etiquette of bunch riding the more enjoyable it will become. :)

I also need some practice at the pointing at big holes in the road thing.  Riding with one hand while I point at a hole in the road makes me more likely to go down the next one or just generally fall off.

Deano, no offence intended or taken.I can never quite get the right words for forum posts.Well done for such a good ride.I knew it was going to be hard for me,especially the last 80k,  so finishing with 3 hours to spare was quite acceptable for me. One of the good things about audax is that it can accommodate a wide range of speed and ability.Everyone has their own level of challenge beyond just finishing inside the time limit. I still enjoyed the ride (except for the cold wind) and now that I know I can do it I shall try for a better time next year. I was overwhelmed at the start by how many people there were, but during the ride I saw very few except at Stokesley and Helmsley.
