SD card for Vista HCx
« on: 15 October, 2015, 02:30:20 pm »
Anyone know where I can buy a non-SDHC standard  microSD card for a Vista HCx.  I assume SDHC is not compatible.  I've tried Amazon with no joy.

Hold on!

Vista HCx works with SDHC according to http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Garmin/eTrex_Vista_HCx:
  - "All new cards > 2GB use SDHC and should work. The following cards have been reported to work without problems: Sandisk 8GB, Transcend 4GB microSDHC."

It even says "Some older 4GB cards use a non-standard addressing format (not true SD or SDHC) and might not work".  Indeed a 4GB SD card that's not SDHC won't be true SD as 2GB is the limit for true SD (and MicroSD).

Ok thanks Biggsy.  I put 4Gb, then realised 2 Gb was needed.  Interesting that sdhc appears to work.  May have something. IIRC  most of the routable map image files are well under 1gb.

Assuming it's not a very early HCx, with original firmware.  The ability to mount larger >2Gb cards was introduced as a firmware update, shortly after these models were first introduced.
Although I haven't tried this in a Garmin*, I think probably you could even use a huge SDXC card provided you format it as FAT32 before fitting it.

* I have done it successfully in other devices that claim to be limited to SDHC.

My Garmin Venture Cx wouldn't recognise a 4Gb that I had spare, so that's why I got an old 2Gb.
