Title: Members' MTB to Road bike conversions
Post by: Woofage on 03 July, 2013, 05:22:16 pm
Following on from the numerous posts in Members' Bikes, please put up photos of your "roadified" MTB.

Here's mine:

Marin Bear Valley ready for ice.

Not quite right (frame size too small, shame as it was in beautiful condition) so sold the frame and forks and continued on the quest for another

1992 Raleigh Peak f&f. Currently undergoing subtlization. Gone are the orange cables and black butchered Brooks B17 standard - IN are the sliver braded cables and Brooks Imperial in honey - work in progress. One of the best road bikes

Sounds like a good excuse to post a pic of the TrailMonster:

Surly 1x1 (running as a fixed gear, naturally), 34/38T up front with a 17/21T Dingle cog - it does actually get used as an off-road bike but it just happens to be in road/commuting mode at the moment ie. running Big Apples and mudguards instead of nekkid with Michelin AT XC tyres.

Having said that, since this pic was taken the On-One Mary bars have been replaced with Easton EA70s since using the former resulted in a bend in the front brake hose that I wasn't happy with.

This used to be a 1996 Marin Bear Valley. Now it's the really bad weather winter hack.

mine...

unidentified 80's mtb f&f, bought from the local tip (when they used to sell things) for £10 (I was initially after the thumbies, but it was too good to split), wheels £1.50 the pair from the same source! Powder coated by a local co. for £40.00

Apart from the headset, mudguards, cables, tyres, stainless bottle cage & mudguard bolts, & fab 'grab on' lever covers/grips all other bits from the bits box including a lovely 80's Avocet Ti railed saddle (which gets swopped for a B17 ti for longer rides). Saddle's not normally this high but step son's been riding it.

Love the GT Karakoram, Slope - I've seen one before and they do seem to have unfeasably long handlebar stems. Also like Eck's Bear valley.

I use a '96 Univega 506 for on/off road touring. It's sort of roadified with 80psi slicks and a rack & guard on the back.

It's not looking it's best here, just after doing the Peddars Way with the Essex lads (https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=36639.125)

Nice thread.  This takes me back to the original hybrids (different from the later, roadster-y products), such as the Orbit Frontier et al, and C+'s reinvention as the 'RTB'.

I quite like the idea of making my Rockhopper Comp a bit more roadyish by putting some Mungo bars on it - I'll have a spare pair of nice black cane creek levers to go on it once I've fitted sti levers on the road bike.  I also have bar tape at the ready.  I suppose it's then a matter of finding some 7sp bar end shifters, and presumably I'd need some inline cable adjusters as well.

I think my Saracen Forcetrax may have been a year too early for Biopace and Gripshift.

Wheels, cassette, chain, pedals, frame & forks are all 1996 original (drivechain really needs a makeover).

Canti brakes are now V-brakes (hence the strange cable runs along top tube), original combined brakes/shifters have been upgraded to better, separate, items.  Quill stem has an AHEAD adapter to take my Thorn "Comfort Bars" .  Saddle is temporary, awaiting a Brooks B17.  Naturally the Tyres, Mudguards and Rack are part of the roadification.  Tyres are Schwalbe Marathon 26x2.0", overkill really but they just trundle over anything and everything.

It's a very nice light TANGE Cromo frame and it's a real pleasure to ride.

The next addition will be a front rack of some description.

I did my first tours on this when it had the original 26" wheels. I fitted the road wheels when I had my Enigma nicked (I had a spare pair) and it became my road bike for ~18 months. I even rode London-Paris on it.

It's currently languishing at home although the dyno-hub is on its way to Prague on a friend's bike.
I have vague plans to get it re-sprayed and to put drops on it but don't hold your breath.

You shouldn't need inline adjusters - you can adjust cable at the rear mech and the front will probably be friction anyway.

Good point there, WJ.  Now to decide on bars - I wish I'd not got rid of those on-one bars I had a while back.

My favourite bike

Gary Fisher 229 with Surly fork, supplied by Interzen OTVP. Schwalbe Hurricanes make excellent on/off roaders. Butterfly bars are pure Marmite but I find them extremely comfortable.

I build them for customers too.

DiamondBack Topanga

And convert them for customers

Possibly the first Raleigh Mustang on these pages?

My first attempt was around 5 years ago.

DynaTech in blue.

Not sure if this bike really belongs in here, coz it wasn't bought as an mtb and then converted.  But here is my troll with its road wheels on:

It was bought partly to do this job.  It's built as a heavy tourer with 26" wheels, but has these 700c wheels for commuting and road rides.  Matching Deore hubs (in 32 and 36 sp) make the disc swap virtually perfect, and the front rack comes on and off fairly easily.  Does road, bits of off road, trailer hauling, kidbike followme stuff, etc.  Whatever I feel like at the time.  ;D

Here's the TrailMonster in full-on road mode, bereft of mudguards and with bars that don't put nasty kinks in the brake  lines ..... now that n+1 is almost ready (fixed-gear 29er) I suspect that the 1x1 will stay like this.

26 inches of fun ... (arf)

It's almost a pity I don't ride Audaxes any more, since I reckon this'd make an ideal long-distance road machine - the 2.0" Big Apples improve comfort levels immensely once you've got the pressure dialled in and they roll surprisingly well (even with a 58" gear I can still maintain my 'usual' cruising speed without excessive amounts of effort)

Almost finished..

Bomber's Bumper's old Brooks saddle fitted (from YACF's "For Sale" section..always worth keeping your eyes open).

An old Tubus Ultralight rack fitted to the front (just needs a bracket fitting instead of cable-tie).

Rear Mudguard needs a fettle to align it better..then it's done...my plan of creating a butch looking, road-going MTB are realised.

Absolutely dear boy - and an ugly tiller to boot (does anyone remember the sturdy legged Tiller Girls?). I have replaced it this very afternoon with something a little lighter (although how can a chunky Ahead stem be considered visually light is open to debate = they are plain ugly, end of).

Trouble is, seeing all these superb MTB to road bike conversions, I'm getting BAS* again. I've even started looking for frames on eBay...

This bike started out as a Trek 520 Mountain Bike when I bought it in 1998. The transformation into touring cycle has been a slow one, taking place as original components have required replacing. I’ve had the drop bars on for a couple of years but after much adjustment I still can’t get the position as comfortable as I’d like it to be on longer rides. I might change the bars soon.
Eventually I shall replace it with a more purposeful touring bike, maybe a Thorn Raven, I already have a Rohloff equipped Thorn tandem so I can cut the cost of a Thorn Raven by sharing the wheels between the bikes as I’ll never ride them at the same time.

This will be my new rough stuff tourer. The ride on road is lovely, not too sure of off road yet. The midge bars are really comfy.

It should be tried and tested at hanchurch woods tomorrow :)

Recently converted my Trek. It now has a front Son dynohub (thanks to PB) and I've changed the C2 saddle for a Flite max gel flow. Only thing I'm not keen on is the Ritchey Comp Straights (https://flic.kr/p/p9KhRK) and am wondering if On-One Mary's would be more comfortable? Any thoughts?

I'm such a fan of these conversions.  I really think that they make the perfect bike for most people.  The entrance to Halfords is normally littered with full-suss MTBs for £99 and low-end road bikes.

There's just something about riding a mid '90s, long wheelbase, rigid, MTB with fat road tyres that feels so right.
Let's face it, Thorn and Roberts charge a lot of money for "Global Touring Frames" that are very similar.

To their credit Halfords got it spot on with their "Subway" and I'm surprised that the whole world isn't commuting on their "Subway-8".

Keep them coming.

I'm tempted to keep one eye on Ebay to check for any "classics".

I've just winter commuter-ized the On One In Bred.  It now has Aldi mud guards, Schwalbe Winter Marathons, an old dinotte light.  Pics when ICBA

The Winter Marathons are 3 or 4 years old so I used a schwalbe spike replacing kit on them.  Half a dozen new ones in on the back and 1 in the front.  The only tip for adding the spikes with the special tool is to use a bit of 2x4 as a kind of anvil to press on.  Oh, and they are quite ping-fuckety but there are 50 in a pack so it doesn't really matter.

The Aldi mud guards are clearly aimed at the MTB rider who finds guards slightly embarrassing.  Their "quick removal" features are fully explained on the packet

1990 Raleigh Blueridge 531 - now sweetly road going. I hate filth and mud and cleaning bikes - no to mention eyeballs bouncing around in their sockets so one can't possibly see where one's going - roads best - especially here in rural Snowdonia

The newly refurbed/morphed Winter shopper. 1990 Raleigh Blueridge 531 All Terrain tubeset, acquired for free/karma from a very nice chap on www.retrobike.co.uk  :smug:

Built a new pair of all black dyno wheels, new Gilles Berthoud mudguards and a new rear rack. Old skool early 90s Campag Centaur gears and chainset/BB (apart from Shimano hub and cassette). Fortunately the original canti bosses are at 80mm V brake compatible centres, so have excellent, easy to set up and maintain V brake stoppage.

Upside down North Road handlebars on a long 130mm horrible looking 3TTT stem - so that will get replaced with a 130mm Nitto shortly.

Not sure about the black wheels - have ordered a silver SP PV8 dyno hub to build a new sparkly pair - will then decide  ::-) Pump will get moved. Have some clear 'helicopter' tape to replace the temporary cable tied dyno wiring.

What tyres are you using (and are they any good)?

I have another about to become the 'next' project, a larger 1987 22" horizontal top tubed Raleigh Avanti with 531 forks as well and a proper lugged fork crown. Even slacker angles - it's almost falling backwards over itself - bit like Robert Crumb's 'Keep On Truckin' men  ;) It is destined for a re-enamel with contrasting head tube and set tube panels, plus lug lining. It will have Velo Orange Porteur handlebars and stainless steel front Porteur rack - to become the light summer shopper and Carry Freedom trailer puller

https://www.flickr.com/photos/obswerve/sets/72157648266482689/

The tyres are Vittoria Randonneur Pro folders, 26" x 1.5" - wonderful slick boots - very supple 120 tpi carcass - incredibly comfortable and roll superbly. Recommended at full price never mind the daft £9.99 I paid from PlanetX  :smug:

Slope the Blueridge looks lovely. As will the Avanti I'm sure.

Brings back fond memories of my first MTB: a Dawes Ranger: 531, super slack angles, wheelbase the length of the QE2, proper lugged fork crown.  My local shop has a 22"  framed bike  in the sale - so I bought that instead of the full price 20" one. I'm 5' 6" with a 29" inside le g- that was 'interesting' off road!

I have Vittoria Randonneurs on the (no longer used, supposed to be selling it) hybrid and need something more roadish for the UTB as I call it (MTB that goes shopping, to the pub and, hopefully, camping and stuff - but virtually never off-road nowadays), but hadn't occured to me to just fit actual road tyres.

The Muddy Fox Sorcerer in it's current guise as debuted at Long Itch. (As per the members' bikes thread)

Tange prestige tubing (made specifically for Muddy Fox apparently!), 7 x3 mountain LX bits. Bought new by a friend and donated to me without a rear wheel, and in a real state a few years ago.

Currently has: Nitto moustache bars and technomic stem,  Shimano bar end shifters, Brooks Ti B17 and Brooks bar tape, Suntour Self engergizing rear brake and  Suntour front canti, SKS guards.

Indeed it is a joy to ride and takes a load with much aplomb ;D including towing a large Carry freedom 2 wheel trailer  I much prefer 72º and slacker seat tubes (the world of bicycle frames seems to be intent on pushing us ever forward!) partly cos it helps with getting a Brooks saddle back far enough on its short rails and I just love the laid back look/vibe :smug:

Holy thread resurrection, Batman!

Dreaming about getting back cycling again (pesky gubbed knee....), I thought I'd share photies of my cheap and cheerful BTwin Rockrider 5.3 MTBSO, which I bought, new, for £260 back in 2012.

Here it is in it's stock MTBSO guise, in Fordell Estate, Fife, June 2012. It's an XL size frame, so field gate sized!

Slow forward a few years, and lack of MTBing, means I'm planning on resurrecting it it as a general utility / leisure bike / tourer, to replace my old Dawes Horizon tourer (which I had oft found to be too wee despite it being a 58cm frame).

Swap out the by now worn out suspension fork with a nice On One Cromo fork (june 2015). Had to change the brakes from the stock tektro mechanical disks, to avid bb5s, due to the mount on the rigid fork being post mount.  Bodged the rear mudguard from my old dawes horizon into place.

Add a ebay special single wheel trailer, which has still to be used in anger - I had planned on doing some cycle camping last year till gubbage of knee occured.  Hopefully this year!

Current plans are to build a set of 700c disk wheels, to replace the rather heavy stock 26" wheels.  Plenty of clearance for 700c wheels, judging by the frame & fork. Might even build a 700c disk dynohub front wheel!

Thanks!  Still undecided about this bike - it seems a little too large for me, and my Mountain Biking days are over. Very heavy wheels. Avid BB5 cable disc brakes are not easy to keep adjusted! Rebuilding my old Dawes Horizon tourer into a butterfly barred hybrid / tourer is tempting at the moment. Hmmmmm.

Then again, on the fourth hand, no doubt my rebuilt dawes horizon would end up to similar to my current road bike (Pinnacle dolomite 2, 2014), albeit with butterfly bras.

So I may just stick with this mtb and use it for a commuter / general pootling about bike. Might try and get some nice 26x2.0 touring tyres for it, as well as a butterfly bar to replace the stock flat bar

Lovely (Why don't you post the superb photo of it in front of the Dam?)

Can't believe how skinny the forks are for an MTB.  Disc brakes would tie those forks in a knot.

I like it.

Does Butterfly know you're dressing your bike up in her bras?  :o

And they are very comfy and springy :) Unlike the back end which is stiff and ideal for lugging loadsa shopping and stuff

As requested . . . .

I think I'm going to go with the MTB commuter conversion. Was looking at a pair of Schwalbe Big Ben tyres 26x2.0 tyres for extra plushness! Those and butterfly bars (why no moth bars?) and job should be a good one

Mary came on tuesday!

So I fitted the On-One Mary bars to the Decathlon mtbso/commuter/rigidoffroad pootle bike on tuesday afternoon, then had a blast around Calais Muir woods on wednesday evening!

The white On-One mary bars were cheaper, than the black!  No doubt a nightmare to keep clean, but at least they match the frame and forks!  ;D And mighty comfy they are too!

She's now got 26x2.0 Vittoria Saguro tyres on. A bit on the gnarly side for commuting to work, but the extra tread makes the 1.5 miles each way a bit more of a work out!  :)  Really enjoying the on-one Mary Bars.  Quite a comfy bike now despite its weight (which I think is mainly in the cheapo decathlon wheels - I may yet build a new set of lighter 26" wheels, and get a front dyno hub installed)   :)

That's a bizarre rear Rack setup.

It's going to cantilever most of the load beyond the rear axle and, possibly, have some negative effect on handling if you really load it up.

Some sort of disc brake bodge, I assume, and arguably preferable to the one I've got that's secured by the QR, causing the bottom end of the rack to become unsecured when you remove the wheel.

I'm sure it improves heel strike thobut.

the rack comes like that from the manufacturer, this is to enable it to use with disc calipers mounted on the seatstay. for lights loads (up to ~10kg) there is no difference in bike handling, compared to a usual rack which sits two inches closer to bb.

I have one on my single speed, the same rack in fact.  I've secured it with the QR though as I didn't have the braze on for it.

Yep, circa 85-6 Saracen conquest.....I've had it a few years and it's a lovely ride..... with lots of original Deore deerhead parts....also had lovely nitto stem and bars, but they weren't good on the wrists long distance, hence playing with the north road setup

Best thing I did with mine was bin the Cantis and fit V-Brakes (new levers required but it's a very cheap upgrade).

A bit or cable re-routing required as well but worth the effort for the superb braking imo.

Good luck with the "lawn".

The deerhead canti's work very well even with the current nasty pads, not like later narrow profile cantis (I've had some scary times off road with those!), and they look super cool, so I'll probly be sticking with them.....got a feeling I'll probly end up having to flip the bars, but thought I'd try them that way round at first

Best way to improve the lawn is to plant more daisies and dandelions, introduce some moles and put up a tent. Most of that will take care of itself in time, so best get on with the bike – far more worthwhile!

I'd like to proffer these kinda frames of that era, are so suited to having fun/imaginative/whacky/whatever rebuilds. Their potential to become and continue to be real usable bikes is immense (imagine that last word expressed with a South Walian rugby commentator twang + add in tremendous, first class and excellent ;D?

That's pretty much my take on gardening....kinda arrogant to think we can make a better job of it than nature!.....so yep, the garden looks like a nice woodland clearing....and the hedgepigs and frogs and bats and birds like it that way, so who am I to argue!

Apart from just spotting the ugly radius of the rear mudguard (I'll address that) my work here is done.

I finally got round to chopping out the middle section of cable-outer for the new V-Brake and gear cables (although the rear one still has a full outer cable, for reasons of V-brake asymmetry).

It's cleaned up very well and everything feels slick and solid.  Can't wait to explore some French villages in summer.

Biggest mod was removing the combined brake-lever and 7-spd shifter (for canti brakes), fitting some Deore V-Brakes from the parts bin and separate shifters (courtesy Rogerzilla).

Back in 2002 it was 6 years old then.

That's looking very nice......fun and practical all at once

And no doubt for a fraction of the cost of a modern "adventure tourer"

I have an "adventure tourer", a Thorn Raven Tour "Rohloff".  RRP is about £2300 but it's quite striking the similarity between 1980-1990 Hard-tails and "adventure tourers".  Nice "relaxed" geometry and built like a brick outhouse.

I'd happily take the Saracen on a fully-loaded adventure, in fact I think it's in need of a fully-loaded photo shoot (for that other thread)  ;D

I'd like to see how the frame handles under a heavy load.  The Raven Tour is very twitchy unloaded but gets better and better the more you load it up.  There's a possibility that the Saracen may get worse and worse I suppose.

It's not worth me selling because, in my deluded mind, it's worth the same as a Thorn Sherpa (a £1200 "adventure tourer") but, in the eyes of Ebay, it's worth <£200

The Muddy Fox "Courier", in good nick, is my dream conversion.  Why?  Because I came very close to buying one in 1986, when they were like something from Outer space.  I bought a traditional British Eagle Touristique instead (Both bikes were about £290) and had no regrets... but the Courier, like the Raleigh Chopper, is a bike I still have a hankering after.

I've gone on some long trips on the Conquest with very heavy loads (I reckon about 50kg worth of 2 full panniers, front rack, camping gear, camera gear and a big box of records on one occasion!) and it's worked very well.....love the way the loooong chainstays and slack angles of mid 80's MTBs carve around corners ....great excuse to hunt down one of the those white Couriers....you know you want to!

Mac is coming along.....I reckon he's a handsome old country gentleman....finally managed to remove the original freewheel via total destruction.....decided he needed the original brake levers back on and the thumb levers relocating....chocolate flavour grips installed....did go for a spin up and down the road, and he really does put a smile on the face....takes a bit to get going, but once he's rolling he plows along....need to sort out a front brake hanger and he's just about done.....

Now planning his maiden camping voyage, a trip down the Ridgeway to Avebury for midsummer

Thought I'd also get the bottom of the garden in all it's wild glory in the picture while it lasts, as I'm now half way through deforestation

That's lovely.

I've been inspired by the Charlie Cunningham bikes raced by Jacqui Phelan in the 1980s. Gonna build myself a single speed drop bar MTB with cantis.

Bought this Raleigh Stone fly Steel mtb in 1998 for my youngest son, now 34, to do his paper round on.
The last 4 years I have used it in this configuration.
Hybrid 26x1.5 tyres.
North road bars
Full mudguards
large sprung saddle.
new rear cassette with higher gearing.
New cables to suit.
old alloy rear rack and cheap panniers.
I have toured on in. a camping weekend.
loved it.
I am now putting drop bars on it and making it a 1x. and
bar end shifter  :-)
