Off at 8.45-ish. Starting off with a reverse of yesterday's route.

heading anticlockwise around Norfolk.  Hopefully the weather there is the same as in London, pleasantly sunny and light winds.  54 miles on the tracker so far average 15mph.  Go Steve!

Norfolk and Suffolk are dull, occasionally rainy, and with a chilly westerly blowing, so hopefully he's coming out of that now and into better weather.

Weather's much the same around MK. Chilly on the extremities.

Lunch in King's Lynn. Shade under 70 miles by my reckoning in 4h30.

Wind has picked up in London now.   There's been a lot of hot air about the weather that Steve's encountered.   I can't find any statistics on average wind speed from the metoffice but I would hazard a guess (given the absence of still cold frosty days this winter) that the last 3 months have had some of the highest average wind speeds.  You can put an extra layer on if it gets cold but when the wind is 25mph gusting to 45mph there's precious little short of (banned) motor pacing that will give you shelter.  Riding in a group is difficult in such conditions (when they get this sort of weather for the Belgian classics even the pro peleton tends to disintegrate) - but to have averaged what he has done whilst trying to find meagre shelter from hedges is testimony to Steve's character.

This year has been windier than average, but windspeeds gusting to 45mph are still unusual. Believe me, in my job wind is incredibly important and winds of that magnitude cause significant disruption! However, there's no doubt that the number of days with windspeeds at or above 15mph (which, in my opinion, is when they get significant for cycling) has been very high. Steve has alluded to this a number of times in explaining his choice of routes.

probably the effects of cycling around Selsey over the New Year period where the sand was blowing off Wittering beach to head height and blinding my attempts not to be blown sideways over the speed bumps.  But I agree, I may have been slightly overenthusiastic with the mph.  On 1 January 2016 I was reduced to 10mph max speed on the Selsey Ferry Causeway whereas on 1 January 2014 it was 7mph (and the sea water in Pagham harbour was only a foot from overtopping the sea defences and unnervingly at head height!)

I went out for a ride this morning, and it was thoroughly miserable - chilly, damp, and overcast. I nearly turned back for home, but thought, 'if Steve can do it.....'

Wondering what Steve will do to add on the miles. The direct route home from St Neots area would lead to a day of ~150 miles.

No movement on the tracker for 45 minutes. Not obvious why this should be.  :-\
Moving again  :)

He's moving now.  Looks like it may just have been the tracker not sending any data for a while?

Oops, wrong thread, yes, looks close to 200. Will have to wait to see what Strava says.

Google route has gone wrong in MK. It was showin 171 miles. Then 200 then 194 then 199. Looping up and down the A5 DC. Some spurious miles there.

188.71 miles @ 14.54mph moving average

188.7 miles
The asking rate is now 209.8 to meet the January mini-target.  To put this into perspective; keeping up that rate for 365 days would give 76579.  Of course, to beat Tarzan's total, Steve actually has to step up significantly at the end of January.  IF Steve beats Tarzan's total on this attempt, the big unanswered question is "what would he have been capable of if not for PBP/illness/diet change/poor strategy?"

The monthly mini-targets are rather misleading since they end up giving Steve 77149.5 - I'll have a stab at pro-rating them down to give a total of 76076 (surely even his staunchest fanbois can't deny that it's going to be nip-and-tuck to beat Tarzan's total?)

The other one (196.7 miles) was MK to Norfolk from the day before, but it went past midnight onto the 11th Jan and so Strava counts it as that day, not the 10th.

I guess the Ivanscience got confused by Steve's little circuits of the local MK area at the end. Google maps routing can't handle u-turns in the road, so it comes up with a big loop to turn around which adds lots of miles on that Steve hasn't done.

The ride on the 11th is 188.7 miles.
