Busted! PM me your Facebook id, so I know which school science technician know S am doing on here.
Just been working on a new project at home with grandsons. I need to get a bit further with it before I post pictures incase it doesn’t work out.

Okay...

New project.  :o

Here's most of the bits I'm intending to use:

Plus a bit of cardboard tube and some newspapers and tissue paper, that I have already started with.

Well done Kim

The parish of small villages, where my daughter and grandsons live, are having a Scarecrow festival. Villagers can make a scarecrow, register it and display it in their garden, to compete for the best/most creative scarecow. They are also having a 'scarecrow teaparty' where people will dress as scarecrows and meet up. It's the sort of community thing us country-folk do.  :smug:

As it is the 50 years since mankind first walked on the moon, my daughter suggested we do an astronaut scarecrow.  :D

All the materials, apart from the disposable overalls and some 450 pipe connectors are waste materials, mostly recovered from skips at work. An aim of the contest is to use recycled or recyclable materials. The roll of white stuff in the bin bag is thin Correx used as floor protection when theyb refitted classroom furnature.  :demon:

Tonight I has painted gloves and boots white...

The grandsons have helped a bit in making a paper mache head over a balloon...

...and it ain't just crows it scares!

Space suit.

 :o

My mum made one from broadly similar materials for my little brother for some fancy dress party, school play or something when he was about 6 or so.  It was a big hit, and got worn until well past spaceworthiness.

I, on the other hand, got to be a fish.   >:(

I need to enlarge the hole in my helmet. (don't go there Rogerzilla...)

Marking out...

This could go horribly wrong (If any of you watched Ed China trim the Messeschmitt bubble car canopy on Wheeler Dealers - you know my concerns) :-\

So far so good... :)

Success!!!  :D

Brought the Trice home today, as welding all done...

I think I'm gonna need to make longer track-rods

Here's how I make trike trackrods:

I'm using M8 trackrod ends - a type of ball-joint.

Other materials I am using are some M8 machine screws with the head cut off, and some scrap fibreglass and aluminium alloy tent poles.

First I use an 8mm tap to cut a thread in the alloy tent pole. A 35mm length is cut off, the tube faced in the lathe and the end tapped again until I have 4 made. The tube is only about 9mm, so the tap actually stretches the tube a bit too. I'm using the tap dry as I do not want grease around.

The GRP tubes are cut to length...

...and the ends turned down to fit in the alloy tube. I am starting from the shoulder end, so that the fibres get cut through.

These threaded ferrules are part filled with epoxy (with the threaded studs just started)...

...the studs are threaded a bit further in and then the GRP poles inserted. When the epoxy starts to set, they are cross drilled 1.5mm, and panel pins riveted through both the stud and the GRP to the alloy ferrule.

The new rod compared to the too-short ones removed from an old project trike.

(I had used wider, thicker aluminium tube when I made the first ones)

That looks so much more professional than the Atomic Zombie method. It involves welding a nut to some steel tube, using a bolt popped through the nut to hold it in line (there is another nut somewhere underneath the welds you can see in the picture!).

The Astronaut scarecrow is a bit less ambitious than the original plan - I had been planning to have it appearing to hover at the end of a 'flexible' umbilical. I can't get him light enough for the lightweight skellington to support boots and helmet.  >:(

Plastic conduit and drink bottle skellington

Coveralls over the top...

Look away now, if you are of a nervous disposition...    :o

This is an end for the carpet tube I used for the neck

Still a long way to go...

Competition next week.

Helium balloon inside? (environmental concerns noted)

Helium balloon inside? (environmental concerns noted)

Although I have access to helium (and hydrogen!  :o), filling a boot or the head with a helium balloon would only give a couple of grams of lift. It's the extremeties where boots and helmet are that I need to lighten. I did consider a suspension wire system, but I just don't have the time.

Couldn't you take the skellington out and connect the suit to a blower like one of those advertising things that dances?

Scare-stronaut/Scare-cronaut (which is better?) installed.

Not neaerly as good as we hoped.  :(

I've been looking for a crow soft-toy, that we can sit on it's shoulder...

...will add a space helmet to the crow too, if I can find one.  ;D

Buzz Gummidge, the scareconaut (50 years since man first walked on the Moon), has been joined by an ‘ast-crow-naut'.  ;D

Hmm, I think the real space cadet is on the other side of the camera.

You’ve got to start putting the cap back on the glue when you’re done with it.

(Kidding. That’s great stuff WJ)

Love the spacecrow, especially his helmet. When is the competition judged? Or is it just for fun?

Just looked again at the pics and found myself trying to figure out who your spaceman reminds me of. Then I realised, it is Bez from The Happy Mondays.
