Liverpool Lime St station cut off.
« on: 02 March, 2017, 12:04:45 am »
Probably of interest to me only, but all train lines into Liverpool Lime Street station are closed until at least next week.

The tracks run through some very deep sandstone cuttings just before the station, and a Victorian era wall at the top of one of these collapsed, leaving rubble on the track and taking out some power lines.

Replacement buses are running between Lime St and stations past the damage area.

I read this this morning and thought we wouldn't hear from you for a while!  ;D

If they don't get it fixed pronto I'll be annoyed. I've got to get to Manchester airport in 2 weeks & was intending to take the direct train.

Very glad I no longer commute in via train from Roby .

I used to travel to Lime Street on a fairly regular basis when going to visit the HMCE building at Queen's Dock. When the train passed Liverpool College I always used to look out for a gentleman of some considerable stature who used to teach there - rugby amongst other things. He was a senior referee and also one of the leading chess arbiters in the UK.

Limited service starting this evening, with  a full service back tomorrow.

They've made the collapsed wall safe with netting , but will have to schedule another line closure to effect a full repair.

And Merseyrail are on strike on Monday, in protest at plans to move to driver only trains.

Those Jerry-building Victorians...

...although to be fair to those jerry-building Victorians early reports (I haven't read anything on this recently) said that the wall had been overloaded by cabins and materials being placed on it recently, so presumably the great grand children of the jerry-building Victorians are really responsible.  It will be interesting to hear what did actually cause the collapse as Network Rail tend to take a very keen interest in any construction work going on close to their lines, but if the cutting is very deep it might not have been easily visible to anyone inspecting from rail level.  A local builder might be needing an insurance company with very deep pockets.

Wasn't it more the unpermissioned extra building on the top of the wall which caused the overload ?  I'm sure if the Victorians had known that was going to happen the wall would still be intact.

It's the ghost of Thatcher, finally managing to cut off Liverpool from the rest of the UK and laughingly manage its decline into anarchy and cannibalism*

Attention anyone planning to visit Liverpool in the next couple of months.   Lime Street Station is closed for upgrade work until the end of July.     Trains to the barbarian hinterlands will be leaving & arriving  at Liverpool South Parkway , with bus services to the city centre.

Just to make life around here more fun Northern Rail appear to be going into meltdown.   https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-44327233

Every train journey I've made in the last couple of weeks has been delayed or cancelled because of these problems, I'm glad I'm not a regular commuter.

Never been to South Parkway. Is that where Allerton station used to be?

Lime street underground station is staying open so if you're desperate to get there by train you can change onto Merseyrail at Chester.

Yes, it was built on the site of the old Allerton station.  It's the nearest station to Liverpool John Lennon Airport  (I still call it Speke!)
