Anyone been to Lords? Without a bank loan??
« on: 14 July, 2017, 08:16:23 am »
N+I are going to the British Museum tomorra, and as it's summer thought we might finally go and have a look round Lords. There doesn't seem to be any matches on.

Is it worth going if you don't want to pay £20+ quid for the tour, or £48 for tea?!? Can you see anything?

[I' would probably pay the above prices if I were a true Aficionado Of The Cricket !]

My parents did get a tour of the Lords with the house of commons too courtesy of the neighbouring constituency's MP. Lunch too. Only cost them to drive down and stay a few nights.

Sorry, re-read it. You mean the cricket ground. Can't imagine it's worth the money but if you're a cricket fanatic then seriously what price is too much for a pilgrimage? Have fun.

PS I wonder if it'll cost more than going on a football ground tour at a top flight club? Chelsea for example.

If you're a cricket fan then the tour is definitely worth it - you get to see inside the changing rooms, the Honours Boards, the pavilion, the media centre, etc., and entry into the museum. Just walking around the ground (if that's permitted), not so much.

I'm just getting ready to take the dog on a tour of Llandysul cricket ground.  We do this every morning and it doesn't cost a penny.  No refreshments available though,  so I have to take my own mug of coffee.

Sorry.  ;D  Not helpful as usual.
Admission.  I'm actually not that fussed about cake.

I'd agree with that - although walking all the way round is interesting too.  I've been to see cricket 3 or 4 times (at enormous expense) and to a few corporate bashes in the winter.  Walking out onto the grass (at the corporate dos!) is quite something.

Some years ago I was at the Emirates stadium on a work related matter and was shown round, changing rooms and showers, dining rooms, ground etc.  Not being a football fan it was OK but didn't mean a great deal.

Not allowed on the grass, though.

My boy covers football and rugby and other events for TV and if they need to get from one side of a ground to the other it's the long way round even for them.  There was one instance where a rigger got shouted at over the PA system 'cos he took a short cut.

Well, I've been as a speaker at a conference and I got a free tour, so I can't comment on the cost, but the tour (I thought) was rather good, old chap. The edge of the grass (we weren't allowed on it as the first Ashes test was three days later) media centre, Long Room, we went in The Committee Room, which I don't think is on the tour, the Real Tennis Courts, the Museum, and the away dressing room and balcony. Three days later the Aussies were out on that.

Lords is the Catherdal of Cricket and has an atmosphere like nowhere else. If you are a cricket fan, it's a must  :)

I've been to Lords a few times as a spectator, but not in recent years as Essex haven't been good enough to get there / my interest in cricket has waned with its increasing commercialisation and televisual inaccessibility.

£4.50 to get in for the match and a self-guided tour at lunch time the highlight of which was witnessing the England captain J. M. Brearly (for it was he) addressing in his rich Harrovian tones a small group of autograph-seeking boys thus: "You are rude little buggers! Sod off!". A tremendous game (at the time the highest-scoring Lords final: Essex 290, Surrey 255 all out). And when Essex won we were all over the grass to the front of the pavilion to watch the trophy being awarded. A very memorable day and worth every penny. But, as you may have gathered, it was 1979.

Back in 197?  an uncle of the son of my dad's cousin (that counts as a close relative in my sparse family ) was a MCC member and got me the gig of selling scorecards at the England Australia test at Lord's.  Only one day.  Not the whole match.
I wore a white cow-gown and was supposed to wander around my designated section facing away from the pitch holding scorecards in the air and making myself very available.
That was what I was supposed to do.
I'll just say that i enjoyed the cricket very much and I didn't sell many scorecards.

Or there's a pub in West Meon called The Thomas Lord (the ground is named after him) with lots of cricket memorabilia.
