Clicking noise when pedalling
« on: 07 August, 2017, 02:41:55 pm »
I have noticed when I am peddling there is a click sound coming from the peddles!!
What could be wrong I'm hoping I don't have to replace the BB

If it happens just when your right foot is approaching top dead centre then it's probably the cleat.
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

I had this with my new MTB. It was the left side crank that needed tightening up...although the sound appeared to come from the right hand side. The pedals were a little loose too, but they weren't causing the noise. Evans did this FOC for me as it was a new bike.

Front mech obstruction?  Loose chainring bolts?  Flapping shoelaces!?

Could be related to the BB or cranks, but eliminate the more simple possibilities before getting into them.  Could also be a pedal itself, of course.

If it's other than one click per pedal revolution then it may be to do with the chain/sprockets/freehub.

change the pedals or have them greased?

It's probably* one of the moveable parts that needs removing, cleaning, re-greasing and reassembling

So it could be the cranks, the bottom bracket fitting in the shell, the pedals fitting in the cranks, the chainring bolts ....the possibilities are endless.  Have fun fixing it!

* it might be the stress on the drive train transmitting forces to the saddle and making a noise up there and then the seatpost shoots it back down to the BB area

Check the loose end of gear cable from the front mech isn't catching on the cranks.  My MTB did this for ages before I worked out what was going on, because it only happened when I used the granny ring and it was usually in the middle ring when I stopped at home.

No-one's mentioned the saddle yet.  Simply check for clicks when riding out of the saddle.  If the clicks seem to stop, could be seatpin clamp or saddle rails clamp.

I saw a few clicks and noises when I was mechanicing at Pocklington during LEL.

1 brake cable end catching on disk sometimes.
1 worn pedal bearing. Grab the pedal and try and wiggle it, there should be no up and down movement, or side to side movement.
1 front hub with worn out bearings. Wheel could be moved side to side in the forks, causing a clicking noise.
1 front dyno hub with worn out bearings. Same, wheel could be moved side to side.
1 loose front bolt on a brooks.

I get a noise, more a thump than a click in my case, on my mtb when I go for the bread. It's the heel of my open sandals on the rh chainstay (which has a neoprene stay protector fitted). I don't use cleats on the mtb either!
