Looking for software that i c ould use to back up a pc external drive.  Would be great if the software could see the new files added from the last back up.

If you want to backup your OS then as suggested above.

If however you only want to backup your data files (and possibly maintain versions) then consider synchronisation software instead, such as AllwaysSync.  Synchronisation is easier if you have a sensible separation of applications and data.

It is an external hard drive.  So was thinking of using norton ghost to copy the drive initially.  Was going to use a PC running from the USB stick with hirens.

So you actually want to copy files from one external drive to another.  Is that correct|?

Just write a little .bat file using the Robocopy command.  Free, fast and beautifully minimalistic.  Google for details.

This is one of mine, for example (with drive D being the source drive and H the target in my case):

   robocopy d: h: /mir /r:1 /w:1 /xj /xa:s /xd d:\temp

I find SyncToy (a MS product) works well for me for this type of use.  Can set it to just update changed files.

I suspect there are a lot of "Backup software vendors" out there who just wrap robocopy in something fancy. It can do everything I've ever needed.
