Remote Access for Ubuntu
« on: 15 March, 2018, 10:44:36 pm »
Is there a remote access tool I can use to access my Ubuntu 14.04 laptop from any other machine?

I would like something as simple to use as LogMeIn used to be before they started charging.

I use Ubuntu simply as a cheap OS, and am not at all au fait with the finer arts of Linux, so something simple is required. Does anything fit the bill?

I think it's built in although I haven't used it. (14.04 is a few updates old, so stuff may have changed)

Here's a how-to: https://www.howtoforge.com/configure-remote-access-to-your-ubuntu-desktop

If you use chrome browser on both machines you could also try

(Mostly convenient if you're remote connecting to a range of OSes)

VNC and RDP are the built in ways of doing it and there are several clients for each protocol. The issue is that these wont work over teh Internet not without fiddling arround with your Internet firewall and dynamic DNS and the like. Great on a home LAN or similar though.
If you need something taht works like Logmein then look at Teamviewer as it has a Linux version:

Its free for personal use I think.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Tigervnc over ssh (on a non-standard port).

It's as secure as your ssh authentication and configuration.  Also tigervnc does window resizing brilliantly. and has windows, linux and java clients.

I use the .deb files from https://bintray.com/tigervnc which are more up to date than Ubuntu's.
