A random thread for ... you know the rest.
« on: 01 July, 2016, 06:04:48 pm »
An absolute gem. Only the Grauniad could have the following as an opening sentence, "The psychogeographic links between writing and walking are a cult fascination, as though the rhythms of perambulation and those of the pen are somehow inextricably intertwined."

Here. Cycling in Lit.

Not entirely relevant aside.
I *was* tempted to start a "Pseuds corner" thread in The Pubbe, but I think Lord Gnome might take umbrage over copyright infringement and what with Justice Cocklecarrot in his pocket and he known to be a hanging judge I felt it would be an ill-advised step. Not only that, but  it is just too damned easy to be a critic and as I read the line out loud to MrsLurker I found it does roll well off the tongue so here it is in a "random" thread instead.

I rather like it, apart from "cult fascination". "The rhythms of perambulation" is a lovely phrase. As Lurker says, it rolls off the tongue (even a silent one) very well. Perhaps better spoken than written.

I was thinking 'didn't the Graun just do something along those lines?', but then realised that must have been the best part of a year ago when Jon Day's _Cyclogeography_ came out. Time flies like a cyclist catching a glimpse of CAEK, eh?

(I enjoyed the piece, even if was a little purple.)

I've just returned from a visit to friends in Sydenham.
I did this in flip-flops.
I never thought I'd find myself saying that.
Onna Brompton, needless to say.

A chap brought a bike into the shop today. Nice old steel MTB with a Shimano U-brake on the rear, Deore DX cantis on the front. He's lost the springs for the rear brake. Unless I can cannibalise an old pair of cantis I think he's down to scouring cycle jumbles.

But here comes the kicker. It's got a really nice Deore XT Biopace chainset. And he's fitted the pedals the wrong way round.

Four. Foot. Snake. That's going to be expensive . . .

Helicoils?

But jeez - did it not occur to him that he might be doing it wrong? I can only imagine how big a cheater bar you'd need to actually do them up, and I'm a bit surprised that anyone so lacking in mechanical sympathy would have acquired such a tool - you'd think he'd have built up enough practice in breaking things that the lesson would have begun to sink in.

£3 from Tiger – not either of the possible denizens of this parish, but a chain of Danish trinket shops, like a sort of Ikea poundland – and a bit of a rip off for the contents (which include "growbars"; that's tyre levers ;D) but worth it for the tin!

Ack-chew-welly, it wasn't. Just cross threaded. No. I didn't...

All the above, along with the incorrectly assembled cassette, makes me wonder who he's going to punt it to.

On the bright side, it looks like the cranks will re-tap. I'll find out after hols.

I've just seen a man cycling along the pavements of Rankeillor Street, stopping to peer into every communal bin along the way then doing the same in my street. I can only assume it's a new form of audax.

I've just carried my bike a little over a kilometre on my shoulder. I don't know how those cyclocross racers do it. Okay, so they have lighter bikes (and probably tougher shoulders), they're only doing it in short bursts and they're fired up for racing, but it hurts! Not just the top tube digging into your shoulder – I found it was better to rest the nose of the saddle on my shoulder – but bottle cage in the ribs and (with cables running under the down tube and beneath the chain stay) lack of hand holds.
