the leaving of Darlo
« on: 04 September, 2011, 10:26:57 pm »
Sorry if you were relying on me to organise forum rides from northern Englishland parts in the next year or so, but I have alternative plans - namely, an overland ride through Europe to Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan (basically a huge loop to avoid Afghanistan and the bandit areas of Pakistan), India, Australia and New Zealand.

I leave my job next Thursday, and I plan to book a ferry from Hull to Zeebrugge on Monday 12th September, then head east.  Assuming I don't get injured, run out of money or go mad, I'll be gone for at least a year, and hopefully long enough to catch the total solar eclipse in northern Australia in November 2012.

Any advice on routes, offers of accommodation etc greatly welcome. I did meet an Indian chap on PBP, but Bangalore is a bit off my planned route...

Deano, it's a terrible shame that we won't have any more chances to get together for a ride for a long while, but I wish you well, and look forward to seeing your reports on here :)
Getting there...

Thanks, Clarion - it is a shame, and I would have loved to have been at Gordy's this weekend, but I have a lot of tedious stuff to do! I will, of course, update you all whenever I can.

There had better be good bridge photos, y'know. Or I might just sulk  ;)

I don't expect there'll be any bridges where I go.

If anyone thinks I've been secretive, well, don't blame me.  I was discussing this with the old man tonight, and he only announced his forthcoming marriage to my mother to his parents a week before the event.  Must be genetic.

Look, I know Darlo has, erm, limitations, but, you can take it too much to heart!

Srsly, have fun. Keep us posted. I'll email you my sisters' details (and not in a Borat way).

Cheers Martin!  Hope to see you next week in York.

BTW I'll be going down to York next Sunday - details yet to be finalised, but all welcome if you fancy a wee ride out to Beverley.  Prob about 1 pm from York-ish.

Good luck and bon voyage.

I can't give any advice on routes etc, but I'm sure you'll have a great time.

Fantastic plan!  I hope you'll find a way to keep us all up to date with your progress - a proper jape for those of us of a less adventurous nature to enjoy vicariously.

I do regret that I never managed to meet you IRL, but my trips back to the North Pennines recently have been few and far-between enough and usually filled with family obligations (and fixed points like the Wolsingham Show).

Ah and - please: take lots of pictures and WRITE A BOOK!

It doesn't look like you will be anywhere near any of the contacts I have in parts foreign, so I can't offer any help there (nearest looks to be Kuala Lumpur which doesn't look at all helpful to you!).

You are in a maze of twisty flat droves, all alike.

Thank you for all the rides you've organised, some of which I went on and a few of which I enjoyed.

I hope your trip is everything you want it to be, and I hope to hear all about it one day, in a pub where they serve really good chips....
The friendly landlord helped us put our bikes into his very big shed.  Very carefully we did not fall into the acid bath which was there.

but - but - but . . . Rides . . . Motivation . . . CHIPS!!!!!!!!!!!

Avoid anyone who talks about 'The 1st Earth Battalion' or claims to stare at goats. Also avoid anyone who is or appears to be, American. Do not, under any circumstances, wear an orange jump suit.   :hand:

Route advice. Get a plane from Turkey to India or, failing that, Singapore.  ;D

PM me the number of your frame builder before you go!

SRSLY. Have the greatest time, stay safe and make sure you bring back enough stories to dine out for at least a year! Maybe you'll come for a ride out round my neighbourhood when you get back.
