Records that celebrate a very famous artist?

Sounds like a good answer - though Jackie Wilson Said should really be credited to Van Morrison, right?

d.

Dexy's have celebrated many an artist besides Jackie.

I can't take it any further than this...

ABC - When Smokey sings.
Dexys Midnight Runners - Jackie Wilson Said  :-\

Scritti Polliti - *shrugs*

Arthur Conley's record " Sweet Soul Music" was about various famous soul artistes.

Aretha Franklin

If that's the missing link, you can have the honours.

Pingu's right about Scritti.

It goes like this:

ABC - When Smokey Sings
Dexy's Midnight Runners - Geno was the one I was thinking of, but JWS works as well (though I would've said Van Morrison)
Scritti Politti - Wood Beez (Pray Like Aretha Franklin)
Arthur Conley - Sweet Soul Music

Arthur is the odd one out, because, while the others have a (then) living artist in the title, his song has none in the title, but namechecks a number of artists in the song (varies, but usually including Wilson Pickett, James Brown, Sam & Dave, Lou Rawls, Otis Redding etc)

I think Mr Mo got close enough to take the title there :)

I was torn between Geno and Jackie.
In fact, I'd settled with Geno and then Citizen Smudge made me change my choice.  Bollocks!   ;D

Jim Morrison's idea for his band name The Doors was inspired by a quote, "If the doors of perception were cleansed everything would appear as it is, infinite." Who wrote this?

Isn't that from a William Burroughs novel?  Naked Lunch off the top of my head.

EDIT:  It isn't a character, as I remember it, it's a, well, er, 'tool'

Ermm......sorry to interrupt an entertaining thread, but as William Blake wrote in "The Marriage of Heaven and Hell": "If the doors of perception were cleansed, every thing would appear to man as it is, infinite".

Please carry on without me; I enjoy watching.

Given that he's offline, and I've now used the powers of the interwebs to check my answer (I have the book at home, but I ain't there)*,  I'll give you another question:

Where would you find a former member of each of these:

Manfred Mann
Shirehorses
Salvation Air Force
Squeeze

and, occasionally, a Fun Lovin' Criminal?

* I also have The Doors of Perception/Heaven & Hell, oddly enough, though very little Blake

Crikey, that were fast!  Go on, then, you've got the baton, but do you want to name the culprits musicians in question?

1. don't know
2. Mark Radcliffe
3. don't know
4. Jools Holland
5. Huey Morgan

It was the last one that helped me get it. I heard some of his show at the w/e ;).

It's late and my brain is somewhat frazzled but here goes:

Where was I on 12th November 2004? And no Googling!

[edit: cross-post with Woofage]

Well, Paul Jones, Mark Radcliffe and Jools Holland, obviously.

<Tries to remember other Radio 2 presenters...>

I'm guessing Salvation Air Force has to be Aled Jones?

The Fun Lovin' Criminal is the brilliant Hughie Morgan whose double act with Liza Tarbuck is a sheer joy to listen to - I do hope they get the gig permanently when Twatface Ross makes his none too premature exit.

Anyway, Woofage got there first so his go.

Manfred Mann - Paul Jones (I thought this was the easiest!)
Shirehorses - Mark Radcliffe
Salvation Air Force - Stuart Maconie, but you'd probably have had to read 'Cider With Roadies' to know that.  I reckoned anyone paying attention to the Reading Books thread might have had a clue, or worked it out from the others.
Squeeze  - Jools Holland

and, occasionally, a Fun Lovin' Criminal? - Huey Morgan

I thought the last one would put people off the scent, cause he's usually heard by about three people over on 6Music, but he has been sitting in very genially for Dermot, so I threw him in.

Actually, I thought there were more members of bands DJing on R2, but most of them (Michael Ball, Mike Harding, Suzi Quatro, Elaine Page, and even Jimmy Young and Pete Murray) were artists under their own names.

Meanwhile, the answer to your question is I don't know, but you weren't round ours.

Well, I nearly said Elaine Page!

I don't know. Salvation Air Force just has the ring of the name of a Christian rock band, hence me thinking of the Welsh god-botherer.

On the other hand, it also sounds like it could be the name of a psych-rock outfit, so the Maconie connection makes sense.
