I found the answer quite quickly by using a famous internet encyclopaedia, but I felt it was cheating  :-X

Are they all of East European descent and have changed or anglicised their name?

If not, then yes, a clue, please.

I have three ideas, but I can't make any of them work for all names, caus of my hignurantz.

'Martha'.  I know that Copland worked with Martha Graham, and Steve Tilston has a <unspecified relative> Martha Tilston (sister?).

Then there's changed names.  Bob Dylan was Robert Zimmerman, Copland's family name was something more European before he or his dad changed it.  Um....

EDIT: Citizen Smudge beat me to that one, if it's right (which I now begin to suspect it is)

Or there's a Billy the Kid connection between Cooder, Dylan and Copland.  No idea about the others :-[

I'm actually going off the idea - I mean, who would change their name to Steve Tilston?  ;D

Me too.

;D  Sounds pretty definitive ;D

I don't know enough about Steve Tilston to link him in, though.  I believe he was a member of Fairport for a short while, but I can't think of anything to link him to Billy the Kid.  I'll just guess that he wrote a song about him.

And we have the answer. Billy indeed.

Aaron Copeland wrote the ballet, Zimmerbob had the album, Ry Cooder had the track, Kristofferkris did the film, and if you listen to Tilston's wonderful song "Slipjigs and Reels" you will know who it is about!

I think, on balance, a point to Clarion for the first thought on the outlaw.

Let's see if this works.  It's about specific tracks.  I'll tell you where to find the answers, but I want you to give me the link:

Hunky Dory
Unrequited
Dream of Life
the other side of Revolution

and I do want to know which is the odd one out.

I don't know about the second two, but I can get the answer from the first two:

Songs dedicated to children of the artist (Kooks and Rufus Is A Tit Man)

Crikey, that's fast!  But not the whole answer, and, to be a bit pedantic, not quite the correct one, either.

Damn, thought I was being really clever then!  ;D

Would it help if I knew the other two albums? I couldn't even tell you who they were by.

Edit: just read the question again and noticed that you also want the odd one out, which completely stymies me...

Ah, OK... Penny drops. Is Revolution the song by the Beatles then? And was it the B-side to Hey Jude by any chance?

Another penny-dropping moment...

Hey Jude was written by McCartney, wasn't it? So it wasn't about his own son. So I'm guessing that was the odd one out.

Presumably the other record has a song about the artist's child written by the parent.

Your two penn'orth? ;D

Yes and yes.  That's pretty complete.  I'll give you the rest.

Hunky Dory - Kooks, by David Bowie about Zowie (now film director Dylan Jones)
Unrequited - Rufus Is A Tit Man, by Loudon Wainwright III about Rufus (obv), missing the point hilariously
Dream of Life - The Jackson Song, by Patti Smith about her son Jackson, now married to Meg White of the White Stripes
the other side of Revolution is Hey Jude, which wasn't an album track ;), written about Julian Lennon (originally Hey Jules) by Paul McCartney.

So yes, Hey Jude is the odd one out, because it's not about the artist's own child, but that of a colleague.

Although I would have accepted Zowie Bowie as the odd one out, as he isn't a musician.

Yay for me!

OK, next question: what links the Beatles, the Divine Comedy, Serge Gainsbourg, Einsturzende Neubaten and Thunderclap Newman, anthemically?

Well, I have had a Serge Gainsbourg album.  One of the tracks is a Reggae Version of the Marseillaise.
The Beatles ended "All you need is Love" avec un bit of Marseillaise
Admission.  I'm actually not that fussed about cake.
