That's horrific.  Sadly, it looks as though it was deliberate.

Sounds like they got the license plate and a description of the driver. This will lead to a prosecution I expect, especially since the police were involved in dealing with the aftermath.

Although not as potentially deadly as this incident, I was passed by an irate driver when I was taking part in an audax last weekend. On a country lane with a ditch and hedge to my left  he deliberately swerved into me passing extremely close, and I can only assume that he wanted me to panic and crash in the ditch (I didn't). There are some right f'ing arseholes on the road, and most of them are in cars.

I can't imagine what the lass who was also involved in that fatal crash in Germany must be feeling.  :(

Kindling? Surely petrol syphoned from the miscreant's own car would be more fitting.

Interestingly the 2nd thread on this story ( started by Valiant) has a link to a 2008 story and the orginal newspaper has other links that appear to make it a 2008 story- so perhapsd just a date mistake on the story linked to in this thread

I've just had a look at one of the Aus fora they are full of this, it happened last Tursday - 08/05/08.

Further news, police have questioned the driver he doesn't sound the brightest penny in the box.

The quote from Sandman on that link is apposite. The York incident in another thread is similar: half of the emphasis in the news report seems to be on "delays" esulting from crashes.

I think that's likely, particularly considering the date in the URL.

As for the driver? Cut his goolies off.  It's the only way.

It's Cycling News, every now and again they stuff up the dates on a story or the URL takes you to the archive page.  I put it down to them being Australian. Too many tinnies at breakfast. :)

According to today's (13th May) Cycling News.  The driver has been charged with, "failing to stop".
Is that the best they can do?

If you finish the paragraph it ends with "and negligent or dangerous driving."

Well that's a bit more reassuring.

FWIW the page I'm looking at has, " A 34 year-old Claymore man has been charged with failing to stop after the cyclist piled up on Southern Cross Drive last Thursday morning, according to Australian news site Live News." and nothing about negligent driving.   Where you looking?

The interesting thing is that if the driver is found guilty of causing the crash through a criminal act then he is not covered by insurance. Estimates of the damage caused range towards the 50k AUD mark (which is probably about  L5 3/6 in old money)
