Recs for a fixed/ss for a teen?
« on: 01 November, 2014, 12:21:16 pm »
A friend's son is after a new bike for xmas.  He's got his heart absolutely set on a mango in colours that would make me wince

http://www.mangobikes.co.uk/bikes/custom/custom-build-your-single-speed-bike

She's asked me if there's any others that he should be looking at.  She has suggested, on the advice of a couple of bike shops, the charge plug and a Merida although I'm not sure which.

Budget of £300-£350, and they want to buy complete.  He wants new and blingy (a fixie not a fixed IYSWIM) not second hand classic or bitsa.

Any thoughts?

What age is this lad?  And what size frame might he need?

12, currently about 5'2 and growing like a weed... it's one of the EldestCub's mates, they've known each other since they were 2!

At that sort of budget it going to have to something from mangobikes or the like, a Pompino will be too expensive, but would have been my first suggestion.

If sizing is in query, Halfords do the (more subdued) Quella range, which falls in the price bracket, so might be worth atrip to one of the larger branches?

Well that's the more blunt way of putting it but as usual he's dead right.

That looks lovely torslanda :)

If it has to be new then EBC have Revolution Track though it's slightly above that budget (currently £389) unless they have another end of season sale. 5'2" is an inch below their recommended minimum size on the 52 though.

There's also a few Viking's in the £200 which would be heavy Hi-Ten steel, but from what I've seen reported they don't fall apart. For example HLaB over on Cyclechat had one a couple years ago and seemed to think it was ok (until it was bent by being hit with a car)

That could do with a bit more purple. Bar tape, chain?  :P

(My wallet is quite glad that it looks teeny, though ;))
