Recommend a really good film.
« on: 04 June, 2010, 08:03:37 pm »
I'm fed up with all the multi $million  crap being churned out of hollywood and looking for something more rewarding to watch.

A few really good and worth while films that I have found recently and really loved were

Let the right one in.
Katyn
My Summer of Love
and Attonement

What can anyone else recommend ?

You never read Simon Legg's review of Atonement, did you?  Sadly gone to the great Internet scrapyard, but suffice to say that he found it rather silly.

I loved The Prestige. Great performances from Michael Caine, Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale.
It twisted and turned and really appealed to me, I loved the ending!

But the best film ever is "Nowhere in Africa" (Nirgendwo in Afrika in the original German).
It also has the best soundtrack ever.

I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

That one irritated me immensely, for the simple reason that it failed to establish that it was set in a steampunk/fantasy universe early on, in spite of ample opportunity to do so.  Ruined the ending for me.

Now you see I would not say it's set in a steampunk fantasy universe.

It's all a very well designed and costumed portayal of the close of the Victorian age, Tesla yes does invent some fantastic replicating/quantumn state machine but that is the one time exception of the film that defies physics, a hell of a lot of films do the same.

When Tesla died the US government seized all his work so we will never know what he was up to, but thats the best premise of story telling, that bit of mystery.

You are joking right?

Durrrr! discrimination is bad..durrrrr...OK.  Black and White people can live together, side by side, on the piano keyboard right?

It was was like "Racism for Dummies".  It made me angry watching it.

1) Pulp Fiction
2) Shawshank Redemption
3) 2001 A Space Odyssey
4) The Godfather
5) Alien

If you've seen them before then it doesn't matter, watch them again.

"Little Miss Sunshine" is a brilliant feel-good film, better than the title suggests.

"Napolean Dynamite" is worth a watch as well.

"Kick Ass" is so bad it's brilliant, my favourite film in a few years.

I enjoyed that, the box made me think it was going to be a bit of chick flick,  but it was really good.
