Pendle 2017
« on: 21 April, 2017, 11:27:01 am »
Mrs CET and I were co-ordinating calendars and, to utter astonishment, the first weekend of July was void of CET Junior exams, school events, end of term activities and other non-cycling-but-you-must-attend-events, so I've signed up for the Pendle and 10,000m of vertical punishment.   Probably a foolish proposition given developing knee trouble on the Tan Hill 600 last year but will try not to fall over at the start this time.

Yes, I too have entered. It's 1 all so far with this ride, so am hoping to go 2-1 up this year.

I have also entered. Really screwed my knee up on the Offas Dyke 600 last year with similar numbers (10,000m climbing) so will be interesting to see how it goes!

This could be a silly mistake!

If you get Pendle done in under 36hrs, I think it qualifies for membership of the High Roulers Society. Has anyone got the ascent figures from a device that uses a barometric altimeter and seen what it comes out on on Strava? My ride from 2013 came out at 8,749m but I neglected to do the "with barometer" thing. Also, I was 2h19m too slow!

Not far enough

Interesting  :) My ride from 2015 came out at 9,140 meters in 38 hours, I'm doing it this year, and if it's near 10,000 meters and under 36 hours, I might be tempted to do a bit more to get that!

I'm currently running a semi compact chain set with 11-28 gearing, is it worth getting a medium cage mech and 32t cassette to get up these hills? Did anyone else manage on a 28t set up?

Impossible to say and I'll avoid the usual caveats about weight, fitness etc. I've not ridden the Pendle but I did the Mille Pennines last year which I think covers some of the same ground. I run a triple and fitted a 28 for the MP on the front which was coupled with a 30 on the back and that got me up everything bar one where the surface was just too sketchy.  Given your current set up you probably don't need anything as low as that but the point is that I went lower than usual for those particular hills and I was pleased that I did.

I would say , without having done the Pendle , but I have ridden a number of the climbs, yes -fit the 32t cassette. I find it hard to see how you can regret it. If you only use it once or twice, but I think you will use it far more, nothing is lost other than a bit of hassle or expense. You may be super strong but just think of it as insurance maybe?
I have ridden up Hard Knott twice  on the Fred Whitton on  34- 27or 28 and managed it but I would not want to test that with a bag and as part of a ride as long and hard as the Pendle, which I hope to ride this year.
I  never used to use a 32 at all but was v pleased to have it on the Wessex series last year...........

If you need to use what is essentially a 1:1 ratio to climb the hill then you aren't wasting much time by walking

That's why I always do these rides in MTB shoes that I can walk in.  The ones I have now are Specialized MTB comp, they are very rigid but you can easily walk in them.  As the cleats are recessed then walking does not wear them down.  During the Mille Pennines I did actually walk up Hard Knot in these shoes  ;D

You were not the only one to walk. I would say at least half the field walked some of Hardknott. It came after about 200km. There were some tied legs.

Weave - it's so much easier than riding straight up. I was running 34-30, but I've ridden with people riding 34-28 who were fine too. If it needs replacing, def go for the 32, but it seems to be a lot to spend for what will be a marginal benefit compared to weaving like a drunk man - which helps loads!

I have never managed it. I thought I was doing ok on the Mille Pennines last year until cramp got me. Gearing was 34x27.

I will ride round on 30x29 as I did for the Tan Hill last year.  I may still not get up Hard Knott but I will give it a try.  I used the same combination to get up Bwlch y Groes at 5am 300km into the Cambrian 4C and I don't care if it was the slowest ever ascent, I can still claim that I rode up it  :smug:

Just a quick reminder that this year's edition is starting and finishing at West Bradford (just north of Clitheroe), and not Pendleton. The new West Bradford start means a couple more hills early on, cutting out the boringly flat A59. Although this new start/finish also cuts out the final climb to Pendleton so I guess it's neither here or there.

Bump.

This is now on my planning radar.
I'll be booking accommodation this week, I think.

Is there a Generally Agreed place to stay / meet up close to West Bradford?
I have read the event web page, of course. And I see the links to Travelodges etc.
But was more interested in what others were planning to do.
Where do others plan to stay?

Also, in terms of general time planning, I do realise this will not be a fast 600 to put it mildly.
The Langwathby control is quite long, at almost 400k.
On a normal 600 (!!) I'd plan for 5 or 6 hours sleep at about 360 - 400k, but I expect I'll need to make do with rather less on this ride.
What kind of time schedule are others hoping for?
