The view sitting in a chair in the reception of a hotel I was staying at this week. The whole place had more than a passing resemblance to Hogwarts (though the figures in the paintings only starting moving after I'd spent the evening in the bar).

Or it could have been used for a Beatles album sleeve (if they had been a bit posher)

The camera in my phone is really crap, which gives a certain bizarre quality to the pics.  I just trawled through and selected a few from the last few years

Sony Ericsson K800i.

Photo is cropped but otherwise untouched.  I had to take a few, using a different area for exposure, before I got something that wasn't washed out or too dark.  That's no different to most cameras in this situation though.

If it is a K800i then you can manually adjust the exposure with the arrow keys.

My problem was that I was holding phone at arms length over my head so I could shoot over the hedgerow.  I couldn't aim accurately enough to get a precise exposure so I just took a few until I got one I liked.

Big wheel at Niagara Falls

Taken with my Blackberry, realised that I probably didn't have time to go and find my proper camera before the sun set

I really like the pictures you've taken with the K800i.
I am looking for a phone with camera, for taking snaps whilst I'm out.
K800i seems to fit the bill, but is no longer available.
Should I go for a second hand one? Or are the newer models significantly better? C902? any thoughts?

Blimey.  I never knew that.
I've only had the thing 2 or 3 years, perhaps its nearly time to read the instruction booklet.

Thanks David.

C902 is very good.  Been using one for about 8 months now and the camera is just fine.

edit: oops, mine's actually a C702.  Still good.

Thanks for the above, C902 has a 5MP camera which I'd like, out of interest do you use the GPS on your C702 much? and how useful do you find it? Might have to add the 702 to my list!

I spent ages looking at output and reviews here

In general Sony-Ericsson seem to do pretty well with the camera functions of some of their phones and I expect newer ones are better.

Whatever camera phone you buy though, you need to spend some time experimenting.  They all have limitations (tiny lens, tiny sensor) and you need to ensure you understand them.

Because they nearly all have a fixed wide-angle lens it's useful to have lots of pixels so you can crop small areas.

Best Bits of SE800 that I'd like on my next phone:

1 - Xenon flash.  It's a proper flash, small but better than (useless) LED "Flashes"

2  Best Pic - It takes 9 pictures in a couple of seconds (including a couple from before you pressed the shutter button).  Great for taking photos of action, when you don't know exactly when the event will happen.

3 - Some manual control over exposure, flash, focus, scenes and so on.

I'm waiting for a similar 10-12 Mp version to be available for £100

Not much at all - a couple of times to find my way in unfamiliar towns, but it's slow and expensive.

Maybe it's time to revisit this.

The Nokia 808 samples seem to imply a quantum leap forward.

What is the quality like of current camera phones?

This thread is of no use with out pictures and tech details.

I am still using my trusty SE K800 so no point posting mine but I may borrow my wife's HTC for some samples.
