Whiskey at Tescos - time to stock up for Christmas.

Just been in my local branch and they have lots of decent malts marked down to £22 - £25. Highland Park, Talisker, Abelour, Dalwhinnie etc.  Jamesons at £17 a bottle and Bombay Sapphire at £21 per litre also seem good value.

I spied Jack Daniels in Sainsburys for £15 last night.
Supermarkets often drop the prices of some things from now till Christmas.

Lithium batteries are also worth a try.
Booze is often knocked down to get the punters through the doors.
I think I ate about 3 turkeys last year because they were going cheep cheap.  ;D
Christmas puddings were half price in Sainsburys last night too.

Sainsbury's have Grants 70 cl bottles of gargling whisky for £10. And with the sore throat season fast approaching it seems like a reasonable investment.

Are those prices better than the airport duty free shops?

They drop the price now so you stock up for Christmas, but then you find you can't resist a wee dram and by time you know it the bottle is empty. Trek back to supermarket and lo the price has risen again by £££££'s.
Works with drinks, choccies , food etc every time.

The beer has been bought and put in a box which has been locked, and the key posted to our parents to bring over with them at Christmas.

The Tescos price drop is a double whammy. Normally, it's cheap @ £1.33/bottle, but they have a special offer on, so three bottle = £3. But, if you spend £40, you get a fiver voucher. So I did & I have. There are four types of beer and they are all more than half decent. (I'm excluding their porter from this as it comes in 330ml bottles & alcoholic ginger beer doesn't count in my book). Anyway. 42 bottles end up costing £37 or 88p/bottle.

Now, how much does willpower cost?

Probably cheaper than the "duty free" shops in the EU, as those aren't really duty free - just discounted booze.
Not as cheap as "proper" duty free shops outside the EU.  For example, I got a 1L bottle of Tanquery no 10 gin (the "posh" one!) for about £18 in Singapore.  Best UK online price is £35.  Tesco is £28 for 700cl, so £40 a litre.

If you like Irish Whiskey, the Sainsburies Dun Leire is very good and usually £15 a bottle at this time of year.  Redbreast is also good and available in Waitrose - often discounted.

Booths have a third off the 16 year old Aberlour.

I'm a bit of a whisky sceptic myself. I can see the point of a flask of cask strength spirits on a multi-day trek, for the portability. But if I'm supposed to be appreciating the hint of Sherry, Port or Marsala, I'd rather drink Sherry, Port or Marsala. Booths do a rather nice dry Marsala, people with more money than sense use it in one of Nigella's recipes.

I disagree. I think the current experimentation with various used barrels is producing some amazing whiskies. Bowmore Darkest being one of my favourites.

Im inclined to agree with that too.

In ten years time we may look back on it as a fad, but right now, it's breathing life into whisky.
It is simpler than it looks.

I was leafing through the Lidl christmas offers and my eye was caught by the 33 year Old single malt.

+1

I've been rather enjoying the Glenmorangie Lasanta (Sherry Casks) the last few days. I now see that Sainsbury's have the Quinta Rubana (Port Casks) at £24.65/70cl. I may be tempted  ;)
