Our local castle

Just up the road from us; Fairfax's men were billeted at our place when they were sieging it; it was intact until the Civil War.

Mrs MV and I had a lovely sunny afternoon there today.  First time I'd been.

I was up by there with Mrs Tewdric and Babi Tewdric only a couple of weeks ago.  A cracking afternoon out in the sun, and plenty of places  for a picnic too.  The cafe looked nice, but we didn't try it.

Is that Raglan?
Admission.  I'm actually not that fussed about cake.

It is.  We did :)

Potentially useful cycling stop, too.  There's not much else round there.

Is that Raglan?

It is.

It's not technically our nearest castle; we have one in the village, but there's not actually much left:

I'm tempted to try and see how many castles I could visit within 100km from my house. Not circumference but total route length. Might be able to get it into the 30's

I catch a glimpse as I drive by on the A40.
I keep meaning to visit but it's always late on a Thursday or Monday evening so not open.
Admission.  I'm actually not that fussed about cake.

Drove past there a few weeks back - it's a long way from Stornoway

It's a bit modern ;)

Whitecastle, Skenfrith and Grosmont have more history.  Whitecastle is the one no-one's heard of and it's one of the best, but it really is a long way from anywhere much (but here)

Castle central here.  Even Monmouth has one, but it's fairly crap.

Got up to a dozen within 5 miles of my house before I got bored counting. OK, so I included Hill forts and stone circles as well. Didn't even get as far as Broughty Ferry Castle. There are at least 7 within the city boundary alone.

In terms of sheer castle density we are overrun. No stonking huge Norman ones but lots of smaller ones. Some more famous than others.

FirstBorn and I were at Raglan with my dad at Easter.  Whitecastle is maybe my favourite of those (and my childhood "local") - though Goodrich is no' bad either (in spite of technically being in the Forest of Dean  :-\)

We are not allowed to do castles. Mrs Pcolbeck won't entertain it due to her Dad being a stone mason and ending up as head of maintenance for ancient monuments for the whole of the north of England. She spent far too much time in old ruins as a kid to get much pleasure out of it now. She even lived in the grounds of Windsor Castle for a while while he did some work on St Georges chapel.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Another castle visit today, this time not so near home. And a bit smaller :)

That's really all of it.

My nearest castle is where the wallabies are on the FNRttC route. All that is left is the moat, hence the curve in the lane.

They look lovely. I love a good castle. Anyone got anymore pics? Is there a map anywhere with all of these in? I've only done the major ones and would love to one day tour as many as I can.

Abergavenny Castle embedded in the Food Festival, today.  Nice to see it populated.

Unfortunately my lunchtime wanders about the city centre are soon to come to an end, Sighthill Industrial Estate beckons.  And yes it is as grim as it sounds  :(

What a great thread!  The only local castle I could contribute would be a bouncy one.  ;)
