Mr L. has it. Apparently he  was "romantically" associated with Ms Joplin for a while.

He must have been very young at the time  ;D

Wha-hey!  My turn again!  Chat among yourselves...

Laibach's 1987 album Opus Dei, in addition to making to want to invade the Sudetenland every time you play it, contains two cover versions.  Names and original artist, plz.

Not a chance!  I know one, which the album title hints at, but the other?  No.  Not my area of expertise, really.

Unless it's the Horst Wessel Song, original artist the SS? ;D

If they were covering Queen, I guess they'd do the 'Ein Volk, Ein Reich...' one ;D *

I've had a moment of revelation... I vaguely recall hearing John Peel or someone like that playing a bizarre Laibach cover version of some cheesy 80s Euro-rock thing on the radio, only I'm struggling to remember what it was... The Final Countdown? Something along those lines anyway.

Because I am feeling generous I shall award the point to Clarion.

"Geburt Einer Nation" is Queen's "One Nation" translated into German.  The sole hit of bemulletted Austrian cheesemongers Opus1, "Live Is Life", actually appears twice - in English as "Opus Dei" and in German as "Leben Heißt Leben"

! - I once made the mistake of mentioning the Laibach version in the presence of ex F-i-L, whose record collection amazes and appals in equal measures.  He proudly presented us with one of Opus' albums.  It's probably still in the Oxfam shop in the Leytonstone High Road.

That's the bugger! I think their cover of that is the only Laibach record I have ever knowingly heard. And I'm not inclined to listen to any more.

I only know the second version, and it was crapperer than the original.  Opus/Opus Dei was the reference i was making, so I'll happily collect that half point. :smug:

Marvellous. Here's one I made earlier - quite a simple one really, but extra marks for a fully detailed answer...

Charles Aznavour
Jacques Brel (twice)
Friendly Fires
Joy Division
Yves Montand
New Fast Automatic Daffodils
Lou Reed
Tangerine Dream
Ultravox

The connection?

If you wanted to stretch a point, you could add Half Man Half Biscuit (since 2004) and Sufjan Stevens (since 2007) to the list. If that helps.  ;)

Is it to do with film?  Montand was an actor, and Aznavour has made a few appearances (notably in The Tin Drum IIRC).  Joy Division, Tangerine Dream & Sufjan Stevens have done music for films, um, er...

(and I don't know who Friendly Fires are :-[ )

Nothing to do with films. It's a musical connection - nothing to do with producers, band members, love interests etc.

(and I don't know who Friendly Fires are :-[ )

They are responsible for my favourite album of the past 12 months or so.
