as did one of the Python's records my uncle had which "ended" annoyingly with Michael Palin saying, in a spiv's voice, "sorry Murray, I've scratched the record."

Did it have two concentric grooves, each with a different track? So it was pot luck which track you got when you played it.

you got it! the 12" version had two grooves in the A side which either played Pop Muzik or M Factor the B side depending on where the stylus landed

Monty Python's Matching Tie and Handkerchief did the same thing on side 2.

Crikey, another lucky guess - I only thought of that because I'd been discussing such a thing with a colleague the other day (I think it was Pavement who did something similar a few years ago).

OK, here's the next question...

Who are:
Victoria Hesketh
Phillippa Brown
Elly Jackson
Natasha Khan
Florian Cloud de Bounevialle O'Malley Armstrong

(the last one might be a bit of a giveaway)

Natasha Khan is Bat For Lashes

Victoria Hesketh = Little Boots?

Florian whatsername is Dido.

Now I'm stuck.  Is one of them Florence & The Machine, and another La Roux, and id Phillipa also known as VV Brown?

Elly Jackson must be La Roux, then.

Phillippa Brown I'm stumped.

But I've got no question anyway (you may be relieved to hear), so it's just as well... ;D

Best award it to whoever can complete the set...

Yup

Phillippa Brown I'm stumped.

She isn't so well known as the others, to be fair, but she was responsible for one of my favourite albums of last year.

Two more names I should have added to the list, both very current:
Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta
Alecia Moore

OK, a couple of clues:

She's from New Zealand
She takes her stage name from a Richard Donner film (no, not Superman!)

Lady Tron?

Nearly... I'll put y'all out of your misery since I suspect most of you haven't heard of her (fair enough, considering her biggest "hit" so far peaked at 33 in the charts) - it's Ladyhawke.

Ladytron are a four-piece electropop band from Liverpool. And very fine they are too.

Over to you, Clarion, unless you're still without a question, in which case the floor is open...

Which bass player swims between Power In The Darkness, and The Engine Room, taking in Now Then?  And what is unusual about his roles?

OK, no progress.  If I told you that the latter part points to the fact that he wasn't employed as a bass player in any of those roles, does that help?

The bass player on "Power In The Darkness" was Tom Robinson, but I somehow imagine it not to be him.

Thanks to Citizen Smudge giving the game away, I imagine that this refers to Dolphin Taylor, who became TRB's drummer by accident when his mate was auditioning for the bassist's gig.

That was my thinking. Don't remember the details but I vaguely recall a member of TRB being called Dolphin. If you can fathom the question beyond that, you're clevererer than me.

Yes, Mr L - Brian 'Dolphin' Taylor.  Not sure why Smudge didn't give more of an answer. ???

Actually, the story goes that he was auditioning for bassist.  He got put on the skins and stayed there. playing for TRB (including on the brilliant 'Power In The Darkness' album), SLF (on the rather meh 'Now Then') and, later, Spear of Destiny (whose rhythm section was inexplicably named The Engine Room).

If anyone can remind me which track starts with Tom saying, 'Take it away, Dolphin', I'd be happy to hear.  It's been bugging me, and all my TRB music is on cassette, which I can't play right now.
