Spot on!
Why should anybody steal a watch when they can steal a bicycle?

since clever clarion is probably too busy enjoying wedded bliss to set a new question, here's one to restart the thread.

Buddy Holly, Nick Drake.  Scottish connection?

Sorry, folks.  I disappeared off to get married & such before finding out if I'd got this right, and totally forgot about it.  Looks like RobM has a good Q though. :)

Looks like no one has an idea on that one.  Certainly has me baffled.  Maybe we could do with a clue.

In the meantime, perhaps I might slip back in with a question of my own:

Art Garfunkel
Carole King
Philip Glass

How do they add up?

There was a tapestry portrait of Glass, and of course the King album.
Worked with Paul Simon then.

Since no one got anywhere near this (and I forgot I'd posted it) here's the answer:
Harry Robinson.

Robinson wrote the theme tune to the TV show Oh Boy (a Buddy Holly Song) and was responsible for the stunning orchestral arrangement on Nick Drake's River Man.  However, he is probably best known for his hit single "Hoots Mon", under the name Lord Rockingham.  How sad that I know this stuff.

Stymied on the Glass-Simon- King connection though,  unless it's something to do with the Brill Building.

Thanks fo rth eanswer to yours.  I'd never have known that, but it is very interesting.

Meanwhile, I'm looking for an integrated solution to my problem - although you can differentiate them to a degree.

I've worked out the answer to Clarion's question with a spot of judicious googling. I'd never have got it otherwise - it's one of those you either know or you don't, and you wouldn't be able to discern the answer by listening to their music. Except perhaps in the case of Philip Glass... ;)

Definitely in the case of Glass.  But I thought Art was fairly common knowledge.  I only found out recently about Carole King.

Shall we wait to see if someone works it out and calculates the complete answer, or shall I number the point to you?

Let's see if someone can make an educated guess.

OK, since citoyen honourably admits Gewgling, Tony has it.

Not quite, though, but it'd be quibbling to argue against.

Art Garfunkel has a Masters in Math, and was studying for his PhD when he decided to become a full-time musician.

Philip Glass has a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics.

Carole King began a degree programme, but never completed.

So the answer to the actual question:

Quote from: clarion
How do they add up?

is: Very well, actually. ;D

OK, Tony's not come back with a question, so how about this:

Brotherhood of Man, Abba, Lady Gaga and Brotherhood of Man

Who are the hombres?

Didn't see the question until just now...

I can get Figaro, Fernando and Angelo off the top of my head. Not sure about the other one. Romeo?

edit: missing answer is Alejandro (I got sidetracked thinking of Ro-ro-ro-ma-ma-ance)

Ok, assuming I got that right, here's another question. Probably quite an easy one for most of you clever folk...

What links Nick Lowe to Tony Wilson via a 20th century American novelist?

One for the oldies there, methinks.

So It Goes - Nick Lowe song, title of Wilson's original 1978 show on Granada TV (with Shot by Both Sides as the intro music, if I recall) and a novel by Kurt Vonnegut.

I'm pretty confident about that last one, so here's a relatively easy one (for us oldies):

Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow
Manfred Mann's Earthband
The Alan Parsons Project

Connection?

Yep, you can have the point, Redlight, though the Vonnegut novel the phrase comes from isn't called So It Goes - it's Slaughterhouse Five, which I'm sure you knew.

Haven't a clue on your question though!

OK redlight, since they are all famous for using classical themes, they have all used the same source for a song.

but I don't know what :-[
