Gardener's Yearbook
« on: 05 January, 2009, 10:15:59 am »
I'd love to be more gardeny, but I keep missing the boat: "oh, you could have grown some of X if you'd planted them a month ago", etc etc.  This year's triumph was a round of cherry tomatoes so late they never made it past green.

What I need is a yearbook: something that says "Early January: dig over beds, plant early-season potatoes, cut back dead stuff on herbs" and so on throughout the year.

Any recommendations?
It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.

There's quite a lot on-line. I can't find the one I used to use before I resorted to buying some books.

Here's a one I found earlier: http://goatstownallotment.com/calendar.aspx

Just becareful when googling you find a calendar suitable for the northern hemi-sphere/Europe.

I think Carol Klein's done one, and I find her prose easier to read.

I have a Geoff Hamilton Organic Gardening book, which has a section at the back which is helpful for planning.  But the best I have is a Readers Digest book from, I guess, the seventies (Good Life, and all that).  Loaned to me by a friend I lost touch with, I'm afraid to say :(
Getting there...

There is also a hell of a difference between Andy's location and mine in terms of when is appropriate to plant stuff out. (note to self, clear greenhouse and use it properly this year).

January - get warm and virtuous clearing weeds and such like.

What I discovered very rapidly was that the hungriest time of the year in the garden is April/May. Everything is planted but not grown enough to eat, and all the stored food from last year has gone.

I'm waiting for the ground to thaw (it's been like concrete for ten days now) so I can dig some compost and poo into the plots.

Most of us prefer to use the toilet for that kind of thing :o

the bits that I poo mulched last year are still quite diggable, the rest is like concrete through.

and getting those parsnips out, hell's teeth, Hercules had it easy
