Elastic band as a spice ?
« on: 07 February, 2009, 07:39:52 pm »
Who had the bright idea to use a dark green elastic band around the coriander ?

I was helping Peli with making some carrot and coriander soup tonight, and my job was to chop all the various bits.

So of course I grabbed the sharpest knife in the house and didn't notice the elastic band in the coriander.

That explained the chewy bits in our soup :)

My mum puts a 2pence piece in the saucepan when cooking fish dishes. I have no idea why.

Adding a coin to fish dishes is a superstition to ensure your household doesn't run short of money.  It's a medieval Christian superstition based on the Bible account of the fish with the coin in its mouth

*goes googling*

Alternatively, it could be to test the fish for poison, but you'd need a silver coin not a 2p piece!
