Broken seat with bagman
« on: 02 February, 2018, 08:03:12 pm »
I managed to break another saddle right at the point where I connect the bagman.

Has anyone else had a similar problem or is it just me?

Two bikes with bagmans  (bagmen)  on B17s.  No probs here.
Admission.  I'm actually not that fussed about cake.

Do the clamp up until the saddle rail breaks, then back it off half a turn?

I broke a b17  a few years back with a saddlebag and a bagman exped.. The bike fell over, and the twisting force must have snapped a rail. Must day it wad very comfy with only  rail, but not a good idea.

Are the breaks right between the back of the seat clamp and the front of the bagman clamp? Rounding any sharp corners of clamps is generally a good thing for reducing stress raisers and metal fatigue.

I have a few saddles here you can use until you get a replacement.

I've used the same bagman on different saddles over 10+ years, every day, sometimes carrying a fair bit (fully loaded camper longflap) without incident. However, I won't be surprised if one does snap on me at some point. It seems a lot to ask of a rail that already has me on it.

Thanks  it’s broken in the same place as the old saddle so I will check the clamp to make sure they are no sharp edges.

Likewise (except the different saddles were all Team Pro or (currently) Aspin).

One thing I've always done, as a matter of principle, is to have the Bagman clamp pushed right against the seatpost clamp.
It seems to me that leaving a gap would be asking for trouble.

It was against the seatpost clamp but rubbing against it I think.  That must have caused it to roughen
